Spider-Man Homecoming is cinema, change my mind.
Spider-Man Homecoming is peak MCU and peak Spider-Man, and I feel the film gets a lot of unwarranted hatred, when they should save that for Far From Home. Homecoming? More like... GOATcomi-. That sounds wrong never mind.

I find that very few of the Spider-Man movies are true stinkers. Overall its been a pretty consistent franchise, and I can even see the merit in my least favourite iterations like ASM 1 and 2. Spider-Man 3 is a mixed bag but the good outweighs the bad for me, and the same is true of both Tom Holland solo adventures. I'm excited to see all three come together in No Way Home and I hope it makes some strides towards uniting the fanbase.

I love the idea of peter trying to seem worse at something, in order to keep his identity. An example of this in Homecoming is when he's doing sit ups in gym class effortlessly, his teacher walks by and says something like 'looking good peter', then after hearing that peter begins to pretend the sit ups are hard for him and that he's exhausted from doing them. Little details like that r the reason I love spiderman movies.

The one thing I would personally change in the movie is near the end, Stark doesn’t give Peter back the red and blue Stark suit, but Peter makes his own suit. This could further send the idea that Peter has become his own hero, and it’d be a nice “suit-making montage” that I’ve kind of been missing in superhero movies. Aside from that, I agree its a very solid Spider-Man movie.

The people who use the “Iron Boy Jr” argument clearly don’t understand MCU Spider-Man or payed attention to any time he appears. Each and every single time we see Peter on screen, he is attempting to become his own hero. That’s what Homecoming is all about. Realizing that he IS something without the suit with the fancy tech. He’s Peter Parker. He’s Spider-Man. And every single time we see him after Homecoming, he is his own hero.

If Homecoming is about Peter being a friendly neighborhood hero and Infinity War is about thrusting him into a greater role, then Far From Home is his struggle to deal with that responsibility of being greater all by himself. It’s not something he wants for himself, he’d prefer to be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and go on vacation with his crush and have his cake and eat it too, but with great power comes great responsibility, so he accepts that role of being a greater hero in order to correct his mistake of trying to give that to Mysterio. The spidey sense subplot could’ve been handled better, but ultimately it’s a metaphor for Peter trusting himself to handle the burden of being that greater hero and accepting responsibility. I find Far From Home to be one of the best Spider-Man movies and I still don’t understand why you don’t like it.

I can see why people criticise Far From Home as having Peter being like ‘Iron Man Jr’ but Homecoming? His arc in the movie is to literally not rely on his suit and Stark and defeats Vulture using his crappy homemade suit and manages to hang on to a plane. Also damn it was refreshing to have a relatively low staked superhero movie but even then I see people complain the stakes feel low but then hate on the MCU for having too big of threats. Also, how is Vulture in any way connected to Stark? Sure he got fired due to Stark industries but he doesn’t even have a vengeance against Tony like Mysterio does. He’s just providing for his family. I can see why Far From Home can get some hate even though I personally enjoy it more than Homecoming. It really depends on expectations though. I didn’t mind the tie ins to the MCU cause it’s an MCU movie. I expected that stuff and it helps makes the series seem more connected instead of DCEU where every entry that’s not Wonder Woman or the Snyder movies feel like completely different universes.

What makes Spider-Man: Homecoming work, is fact that Peter is willing to live a normal life amongst average people. But he can't, cause he's a superhero with spectacular powers. And despite him loving his 2nd identify, we can see that Peter really doesn't have a choice. That what makes Spider-Man: Homecoming feel so realistic, that all of us have a choice. And when you say after endgame do you mean that he needed a stark suit during endgame(cause sure, I that case I agree), or he needed it to fight mysterio? Because Imo the only reason he needed a stark suit was because he didn't bring any suit to begin with, the whole field trip was supposed to be about him doing anything but spider stuff, but his plans get ruined. He has to use the night monkey suit because that's what shield/sword gave him and asked him to fight the threat. At the final fight the only reason he needed to create another stark suit was because he brought none and the night monkey suit got destroyed on the train. The mcu spider-man who is more than capable created his own web shooters and he could have made his own suit at home just like he did with the web shooters.

Yes, but the writers wrote the plot so he would be forced to. They didn't need to do that. Far From Home could've been written entirely different. Damage his suits, wreck his life, make the Aunt May discovery a difficulty rather than a joke, and have Mysterio come in as a 'new hero' that tarnishes his reputation, isolating him from the Avengers and Happy and Pepper. Then have Peter learn to overcome these obstacles. It's not hard to write a Spider-Man story, just have him lose everything and work his way through it. HC is a good Spider-Man movie. Far From Home is a well done superhero comedy but a poorly done Spider-Man story.
@rickrivers2021
@rickrivers2021 2 жыл бұрын
@Erik Kemeey 1) His character development was for an unnecessary arc. We already saw him learn to be his on hero and not try to live up to other's standards. Now we see him struggle again to be his own hero and live up to other's standards. It's like HC all over again, but with a twist. 2) I didn't even talk about his spider-sense. But yes, I'm irritated they called it the 'Peter tingle' and wrote it out of the story for a bit. I'm fully aware they brought it back with zero explanation in the climax. 3) Having him struggle with his personal life isn't Spider-Man 2 all over again. Read the comics and you'll see he has his life fall apart regularly, and it happens in different ways each time. I don't want the same story constantly, I just want the character in a kind of story that demonstrates who he is and what makes Peter Parker the unique kind of super hero he is. Instead, before NWH, MCU Spider-Man is treated like countless Marvel (or DC) younger characters that constantly (to the point of irritation) are trying to work their way out of the shadows of the more classic heroes. We're talking Spider-Man here, the face of Marvel. Why is he living in Iron Man's shadow? There are different characters to tell that story with.

I love that his wants are so simplistic, but relatable and he’s just such a good kid that’s trying to do his very best. I kinda get why people don't like FFH but I don't agree with it at all. I don't see how it undoes this story. I feel like it adds to it. Civil War is Spidey meeting his heros and being brought into this bigger world. Homecoming is exactly what you said in the video. Him realizing that Spider-Man is more than the suit or who gave it to him. Then Infinity War/Endgame showed how much he's grown as a hero and that he can handle the small scale stuff as well as the Avengers level stuff. He's cracking jokes because his spider sense goes off and he thinks they're about to fight a bunch of Aliens. HES NEVER FOUGHT AN ALIEN BEFORE!! He proves that he could be an Avenger so Tony makes him one. In this universe, being an Avenger is a high honor and not like being an Avenger in the comics so you have to separate the two. Then, to me, Far From Home is not retelling homecoming. To me, it's actually building upon it. He knows he's a hero. He knows hes got the trust of the Avengers but now that guy who made him one is dead. Caps gone. Widows dead. Visions dead. And evidently Thor, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel are all doing superhero stuff. Now he's expected to just be able to handle the big scale stuff that he JUST STARTED DOING! But not only that, he's expected to do it alone. He knows he can go up against Vulture and some crooks with tech. No biggie but now he's got to fight world destroying monsters without an Avenger to guide him through this stuff? He felt safe in IF/EG because of everyone else around him. He doesn't know Fury or Mysterio. And now the world just expects this kid who probably has a bit of PTSD to just go ham on the big stuff like that's all he's ever done. He needed the Avengers to fight Thanos but now they're all busy and he's all they got. Now his friends are in danger and he thinks he's about to lose a girl he really likes and just when he thinks hes okay and out of it all Fury adds more pressure by giving him those glasses and putting his friends in the middle of it when Peter was specifically trying to avoid that. By the end of the movie, he learns that hes going to make mistakes and that it's okay because even the heros he thought never made mistakes did exactly that. He already learned that he is a hero but now he's learning that being hero isnt about being perfect but that it's about fighting even when it feels like you've made every mistake possible. He is just as capable as his idols. So he makes a suit that he wants to make and he makes the plan and he stops Mysterio all by himself, gets the girl, and is happily ever after...except he made more mistakes by being too careless with his identity because he's too nice of a guy and is too trusting so the consequences of that is him losing that secret to the world but not only that but they think he killed someone the world thinks is a hero. Parker luck. Every movie so far has him lose just when he thinks he's won. Every single one with the exception of Civil War. To me they work hand in hand like a comic story arc. Each movie and issue building up to the final issue which is No Way Home. A culmination of his mistakes and struggles. Just my take tho

I think there are certain positives to Spider-Man becoming an Avenger in IW and FFH. To me, it's akin to a graduation. Peter decides in Homecoming that he's fine staying low to the ground, but now he's forced to be a big superhero whether he wants to or not. For example, at FEAST in FFH he's bombarded with so many questions that go over his head, he asks "does anyone have any friendly neighborhood questions?" He doesn't want the responsibility of being an avenger because he doesn't feel ready, hence giving Mysterio Edith. Then he realizes Mysterio manipulated him into feeling unworthy, and Happy assures him that he doesn't have to do things perfect to do the right thing with his power. Then Peter defeats Mysterio, showing that he's broken through the illusion that he's not ready to grow up (be an avenger). Not that FFH is perfect, Brad is stupid and Mysterio didn't need to be connected to Stark, but I think the core of the story is an interesting continuation of Homecoming.

Wow you made an excellent point about Tom Holland’s Peter Parker coming of age in a world where superheroes are already present. It makes me appreciate his films as a more modern take on Spider-Man and it makes sense that he wouldn’t face the same plights as the previous interpretations of Spider-Man would have. Also the scene where peters stuck under the rubble still gives me goosebumps to this day.

The monument setpiece is great, and I get what they were going for, but I never really bought that Peter was in any real danger when he could’ve just shot a web to catch himself, even if he did slip. Peter himself doesn’t really acknowledge this either. All they had to do was have his web shooters break in some way, and it would’ve played better.

I found Homecoming to be a mixed bag, although I do think that the good outweighs the bad. And The Vulture contributed to both good and bad aspects of the film. To the good,Micheal Keaton as The Vulture is unquestionably my favorite villain from any Spider-Man film so far. But to the film's detriment--and I don't think that this is the reaction that most people had while watching it--I liked and identified with Keaton's character so much that as I watched the film for the first time, I kept finding myself thinking things like,"Yeah,Peter! You're young and you don't really understand how the world works yet." And I don't think that I was supposed to be thinking things like that. I don't feel like any piece of Spider-Man media should do that,and I don't think that the filmmakers themselves intended to have that effect on anyone either. But it had that effect on me...

I personally don’t mind spider man homecoming, it’s a decent even good entry in the MCU and is very entertaining and fun to watch, but I wouldn’t call it an “Amazing movie” or even a great spider man movie. My problems with this movie are that it feels like a gateway for many plot points of the mcu converging into a spider man story, and it just doesn’t “Feel” like a spider man movie, because it lacks that distinct spider man tone and style that was present in the ramiverse or even the Marc Webb films. I did however really like Michael Keaton’s Vulture and the dynamic between Tony Stark and Peter Parker. So homecoming is good, but not great imo.

Personally what puts me off is what the film skips or makes irrelevant in what any other Spider-Man story would‘ve been a source of drama. Peter bails out of his team at the last minute, but now wants back in. Does he get scolded for flaking and expecting to be welcomed back? No, it’s played for laughs and he’s instantly welcomed back. He ends up not being able to make it to the decathlon. Does his team maybe lose, and get angry at Peter for maybe costing them the game after being so gracious to him? Nah, they win anyways so they don’t care he’s pretty much gotten a free vacation. “I’m nothing without this suit.” Peter you saved lives for six months in pajamas before even meeting Tony, why are you going through Tony’s Iron Man 3 story arc? Aunt May now knows Peter is Spider-Man, which has never been done before. They literally skip all the drama and get to the point where Aunt May can make light jokes of Peter’s literal day to day confrontations with death.

I still disagree with you about Far From Home being a bad movie, but I absolutely love this video. Homecoming is my favorite Spider-Man movie, and it’s really sad that even though people have understandable reasons why they don’t like the movie, there are people who treat it as an abomination and as a symbol of everything that Spider-Man doesn’t stand for. Which, as a Spider-Man fan, hurts me on a personal level due to my love for this character. And I think you hit every nail on the head accurately. Homecoming is not Spider-Man 2, and it’s not trying to be Spider-Man 2. But, that’s a good thing. Spider-Man 2 is not the only way to make a good Spider-Man movie, and while it’s one of the best CBMs of all time, we should be encouraging Marvel and Sony to make different Spider-Man films and tell different stories with this character. Maybe the MCU Spider-Man isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. If the Raimi trilogy is your preferred Spider-Man story, then that’s great. But, I love the MCU Spider-Man. There are people who aren’t going to love his films (and even though I disagree with you that FFH is a bad movie, I still respect your opinion about it nonetheless), but that doesn’t mean that those who do should be ridiculed or should be considered “fake Spider-Man fans”. I see too much hate for this movie and FFH on Twitter, and it gets exhausting after a while. So, I want to personally thank you for making this video. Homecoming is genuinely such an amazing Spider-Man movie. I really don't understand people attacking it. "He's Iron Boy Jr" even though Stark only saved him once, and he beat the Vulture without Stark Tech. That rubble scene is peak Spider-Man, it's literally the embodiment of that character. Ditching his friends for the greater good, getting his clock cleaned, and still finding the will in him to go and do the right thing, to stop the guy who is literally the worst case of "meeting the parents." Vulture being a perfect villain by the way. The scene where Tony takes away the suit, and Peter realizes Spider-Man is within him and not the suit reminds me so much of Superman as a character. His greatest trait is is humanity, which is in all of us. Similarly, Spider-Man's greatest trait is his humanity and willingness to help others, something we all have (evident with how Mauricio dressed up as Spider-Man for Halloween and gave candy to kids). I personally love Homecoming, and i'm glad that in this ocean of hate towards Holland's Spider-Man (brought about by people like (with all, all due respect) HiTop Films and (no due respect whatsoever) The Amazing Lucas), there's people who appreciate the movie for what it is, and not what it could or should be. Also, wow i never noticed how Peter made up his mind 10 minutes ago after that car ride. Can't believe i missed that detail!

I don’t get how people still don’t understand Far From Home. Peter isn’t fighting Tony’s war for him. Because if Tony was still alive, Mysterio wouldn’t exist. Mysterio exist because of 2 catalysts, Tony dismissing beck’s tech, and infinity war/Endgame. Is it contrived and probably not a smart idea to give those glasses to Peter? Of course! But Tony knew if he gave them to Ross or Rhodes, they’d go straight to the military and Tony didn’t want that. He trusted Peter because he probably knew Peter wouldn’t really use them and probably store them away. Mysterio is Peter’s enemy. He has a personal connection to Peter, he’s a fantastic villain, but to top it off, beck and the world are essentially what JJJ represents in issue 50 of Stan Lee’s original 100 issue run. Peter doesn’t quit being Spiderman for a girl, nor does his life get better. He quits because someone else’s voice was louder than his. He is lied to by MJ to make him think she never actually liked him. Peter didn’t wanna be Spider-Man because he didn’t think he could live up to it. Partly because of Tony. If Homecoming was about Self Actualization, the Far From Home is about Self Worth and listening to your own voice above everyone else’s. Far From Home is literally the only marvel movie in general to make me cry because of that lesson. FFH may not be the greatest Spiderman movie, thats ITSV, but it definitely captures Spiderman and definitely is a lot closer to the comics than Spiderman 2.

He only got the Iron Spider suit in “Infinity War” because he needed it for space if I remember correctly he was about to die from lack of oxygen so Tony sent in the Iron Spider suit. In “Spider-Man: Far From Home” he only uses it for I think one scene and he isn’t even fighting anyone it was for a press conference where it is the people comparing him to Iron Man, not him. That’s what the movie was about for Peter to stop caring what other people expect of him and to continue down his own path. Mysterio didn’t target Tony or anyone close to him specifically; he targeted Peter to get his glasses, which he only desired for his plans, which Peter gave to him making it his responsibility to stop him.

I remember when it came out I loved it Then discourse took hold and well, I was definitely swayed more towards “bad Spider-Man movie" and remained firm in that camp till FFH Then FFH came around (oof, that film was not for me)...and needless to say not only did I seek solace in my favorite films of the previous iterations (the first TASM, and Spider-Man 2) I also re-sparked a love for Homecoming. It's by far the least accurate Peter Parker yeah, but I love it for daring to be different and taking inspirations from very unique sources that all amalgamated into this warm coming of age story that wears it's Hughes influence on its sleeve, while allowing Watts to play with elements of the Spider-Man mythos that he felt played into that style of film and giving him the opportunity to exercise a VERY deep dive into the material (such as Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, and the broader world pieces of early Ultimate Comics Miles Morales stories). I'd honestly say that Homecoming right along Spider-Verse, TASM, and Spider-Man 2, are the best examples of a great Spider-Man movie.

A lot of what you said about how Peter had to find his own path to being a hero reminds me of my favorite Spider-man movie *Spider-verse* . Miles in a way has the same kinda set up as MCU peter, being amongst accomplished Spider-men who’ve all walked the walk before him, and struggling to find his way to achieve that. When the Peters and the Miles trust themselves they arrive as Spider-man, and thats pretty awesome

I'd like Homecoming so much more if it felt like it had some actual depth of character that wasn't just surface level. With Spider-Man in the MCU already having his powers, I feel like we never truly got to know Peter(deeply) and his life and his personal struggles outside of his suit, something I think a Spider-Man movie needs and something Raimi's movies and Spider-Verse does very well. So I do respectfully disagree.

That's the entire main point of the mcu spidey movies. The center of the story is always Peter. What are you talking about?

@@nickreed3924 I'm saying that it isn't good. It's surface level, it's serviceable at best. I'm less invested in Peter in his 2 Spider-Man movies and 2 Avengers movies then I am with Miles Morales in Spiderverse alone.

I agree, it's like they count on you already knowing the character that you'll just be happy with whatever they give you. It feels like because they didn't go with the classic origin and that they actively try to avoid doing anything that was already in a previous spider-man movie, that they decided to try to kinda give a sense of an origin with tying him to the avengers and being in their shadow, and Tony stark as the kinda uncle Ben figure. I mean it definitely connects their version of spider-man well to the rest of the mcu, but once you take out any mcu stuff, the movie doesn't stand well on its own. It's not deep enough and doesn't feel like something that could be it's own thing, like doctor strange or antman, or the guardians of the galaxy, it just feels like another episode in the mcu.

I’ve noticed this pattern of anyone who hates Far From Home or thinks that it undoes what homecoming did, or blindly says Spider-Man 2 is the greatest, is a bully and is nothing really like Peter Parker.

I do have some problems with Homecoming. Mainly the Disney Channel tone but, it does have this moments that have that Spider-man essence. FFH is a whole nother story but let’s not worry about that.

Yeahhh idk man. I love Tom Holland and I think he has enormous potential but these movies don't do Spider-Man any justice. As soon as he heard Tony Starks words instead of Uncle Ben's giving him strength to push the rubble off I knew they had absolutely no idea what the character is about. Just my 2 cents though. Respect.

I would've liked Ben in the movie, but his words giving Peter strength in the rubble scene would make no sense considering he's not physically present or even audibly present in the movie, and would've been more confusing than anything. To have what you're asking for be the case, he would have to be as big of a character as Tony in the movie (which tbh he should, but that's not what the movie's trying to do, and I respect that)

Something that people don't get is that Uncle Ben is mot the Jesus figure for Peter that the raimi movies make you think he is. He's a big reason for why Peter is spiderman, but he's not the end all be all. As far as mentor figures go, Johnny Storm was a much bigger influence on Peter than uncle Ben ever was. Tony isn't filling the uncle Ben slot. He's filling the Johnny Storm slot. Uncle Ben didn't even say the famous responsibility quote originally. Having more references to Ben would be great, but we don't NEED them.
@PvtParts-hr4zv

Yes he wasn't present in the movie so I would've liked them to include him in some form. We don't need to see him die again, I don't mind the decision to forgo that, but for Tony to appear and give him the courage he needs? Tony Stark is a mentor and friend to Peter but he is NOT Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben is the reason Peter became Spider-Man. I actually think it would've been smarter in this trilogy if he didn't hear Tony's words at all and gathered the strength from himself, much like the comic panel that scene is based on.

I loved Homecoming so much. I loved how it still made it feel like a high school movie/vibe, but really showed the struggle of being an amateur among the worlds greatest heroes. Far From Home was a good film, but not a good spider man film. It lacked that feel that I loved so much from Homecoming.
