32x gets a bad rap, but only because it was ahead of its time business model. Ps4 Pro, Xbox one x. did the exact same thing, not release a new system, just upgrading the system already available to hold people over for the next true Next Gen offering. 32x failed because the system besides virtua fighter and virtua racing still wasnt powerful enough to offer next level arcade ports. Saturn eventually did that.
@Ro_Morgen3 жыл бұрын
It's not the same. You can play the same games on the PS4 Pro and Xbox one X and on the base consoles. There are no exclusive games for those upgraded consoles. The 32x was rubbish, with exclusive games that were bad or plain mediocre.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu3 жыл бұрын
@@Ro_Morgen I think the biggest problem the 32X had was the fact that it was a creation of Sega of America to use as a stopgap until they could get the next console out. The problem was Sega Japan had very little interest in supporting it and they had no problem pulling the plug after a very short time completely undermining themselves. The 32X shouldn't have existed at all. If Japan had just put their foot down and kept SoA from putting it out they would have been in probably much better condition though considering how they handle the Saturn maybe their failure was inevitable.

@@akhandtripathipyz9888 It's not that Saturn was undercooked, it's just that Sega went in the wrong direction with it. Sega incorrectly assumed that it was going to be another generation focused on 2D games, thinking that nobody would want to make full jump to 3D on consoles yet when 3D games are still in their infancy and have lots of problems and limitations, as well as being difficult to develop compared to sprite based games. But gamers craved 3D anyway even if it was still janky and rough, Sega didn't realize that the public would rather prefer bad 3D games than fantastic looking 2D ones on new consoles so they banked everything on 2D and only gave Saturn the most basic 3D rendering capabilities. Nintendo did the opposite and went full 3D, giving N64 hardly any means to render 2D games. Only PlayStation was well balanced for both 2D and 3D, it didn't excel at either unlike Saturn and N64 but it could do both remarkably well so it's no surprise that it pulled ahead in the end.

Such a great perspective. As a kid, I was always a Nintendo fanboy, but in my heart of hearts always marveled at the innovation, experimentation, and just plain “cool kid” factor that Sega embodied in the early Genesis days. While the peripheral expansion of the aging system proved to be the beginning of the end, as it were, it was a combination of ill-conceived hardware and even worse software support as you allude to. There’s an old adage that says “you can’t polish a turd,” and while the underlying technology may have held promise if given the right support, it seems the 32X was destined to be such a turd almost from the get-go. I often wonder what the gaming world might be like if Sega still existed as it did in those early Genesis days, and what kind of innovation it might have spurred. Thank you as usual for the tremendous work, thought provoking and engaging content as always!

You make a really good point but it important to know that this game was rushed out to release at all. It was the final game released on the 32X and if the team asked for a delay to make it even better, then it would probably be cancelled. At the time it released, 32X was already old news and if it got the time in development it needed, then it would release at a time where it would produce even less sales. The criticisms are still valid but the rushed nature is the reason behind them.

The 32X allows you to play 3D games on the Mega Drive as well as fulfill its original purpose: arcade perfect ports. Doom, Virtua Racing, Star Wars Arcade, FIFA 3D, Motocross Championship, Virtua Fighter / After Burner, Mortal Kombat II, Space Harrier, NBA Jam, WWF Arcade. Sega had a Spider-Man Arcade at the time. Blue Sky would have been well-inspired to port this arcade game. Instead they went for a platformer, a genre which they successfully renewed with their great Vectorman 1 and 2 on the Mega Drive. Wiith Knuckles Chaotix, Spider-Man Web Of Fire is one of the rare instances of a 32X platformer. Because of physics, Spider-Man makes a great platform game character. The Mega CD had already produced a great Spider-Man game with a kill3r soundtrack and lots of extra contents. Pile up all the things I just said, that already gives you a crazy high expectation. Does the game meet them? No.

4:14 Look I don’t mind pre-rendered graphics in video games, but it’s not just about how amazing it looks, but also how well you use it for games with fast paced fun and/or action, (See the Donkey Kong Country games for example), Spider-Man: Web of Fire unfortunately doesn’t use it to good results.

I remember being one of those dumb kids who fell for the 32X because of Star Wars Arcade and Virtua Racing. Those games were excellent. It almost felt like a next-gen console when compared to the Genesis Virtua Racing (which wasn't too bad for the time either). Then I got my hands on Doom and knew something was up. It play well and was better than what I could run on my PC at the time. MK2 was an OK improvement over the Genesis. It was then World Series Baseball that made me feel scammed. The game was EXACTLY THE SAME. Then I got NBA JAM: TE and WWF Raw and essential gave up on the system 5 minutes later. Being a young teen at the time with limited funds I was pretty mad that I missed out on some great Genesis releases because of EGM and Gamepro hyping up the system so much in the beginning. Heck, I haven't even played Ristar yet to this day!

In 1994, my brother and I got duped into buying the 32x. I think we only ever got to play a handful of games on it. Back in the day, we would have at least enjoyed renting this one.

I love your videos as always, but this is the second MANDELA EFFECT I FOUND regarding you channel. I read 7 YEARS ago, this game never saw the light of day due to obvious reasons. This game was cancelled with 60% of the game complete. In 2016, someone was working on the rest of the game and said the would release it in 2018. I didn't here anymore about it and now you say March 1996. Hmmmm. The thing was cancelled in 1995. ( sega 32x ) so releasing this in 96 makes no sense. But that's the nature of the MANDELA EFFECT, IT SIMPLY MAKES NO SENSE.

Someone got incredibly lazy with the music here. Reusing the Roland SC-55 D snare from the Power Kit is one thing, but not even changing the pitch of it or doing anything special to mask it is something else entirely. You were correct when you said this music was very forgettable. Beyond repetitive, dull, boring and uninspired. As a musician myself I find this to be an utter travesty. It hardly shows the power of the system or the game as a whole.

I remember the Phantasy Star IV and Virtua Racing Genesis carts late in the console's life on store shelves for $90...those games were actually worth a premium price at the time. They were the best of their genre on 16-bit consoles. $70 for this within the same calendar year and also required a $150 add-on? Good grief.

Sega CD Spider-Man is a very good game that offers something beyond typical 16-bit software. The Sega CD was more "next gen" than the 32X in many ways with just a handful of exceptions in 32x library. Sega already had their machine that straddled the 16-bit and 32-bit era with increased power and CD sound but the amazing software was somehow hidden from casual gamers.

I did enjoy my 32X for a short while when I got it. I had Doom and to me it was a close port of the PC version which kind of blew my mind. Similarly After Burner felt arcade perfect to me and at the time, having something close to arcade level at home was amazing. I only got 3 games and moved on to the PSX very quickly though.

What game do you think actually shows the 32x ability? I don’t know of any off hand that really set it apart.
@SegaLordX3 жыл бұрын
I think the 2 Super Scaler games showed great promise(Space Harrier/After Burner II) but they were older. Sega should have brought forward Outrunners and Galaxy Force II instead. Virtua Racing Deluxe and Star Wars Arcade were decent. More games like those would have helped. Doom was actually the skeleton of a good game it just needed more content and a decent soundtrack.

I can see why Sega wanted a Spider-Man game on the 32X. Spider-Man had been a solid contender on the Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis and Mega/Sega CD. But Web of Fire is an average Spidey title at best. It could have been pretty good if they'd been able to harness the power of the 32X. I think it needs 6 button controller support, and Spider-Man should have had more extensive web attacks, that made full use of his abilities. That could have changed the gameplay up considerably.

@JohnDoe-wq5eu3 жыл бұрын
It's biggest problem is the fact it was never really properly utilized. At least the Sega CD had CD sound and FMVs. The 32X was a poorly supported product seemingly farted out by SoA to artificially extend the life of the Genesis. It had the potential to be so much more but it was never given the proper support it would have needed to truly succeed.

32x was such a scam in general.
@edwest22633 жыл бұрын
Indeed it was. I always wanted a 32X and loathed the Sega CD. Later in life I got both. Sega CD is one of the most misunderstood consoles of all time, and has many must have games. 32X is pure garbage, save a few games.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu3 жыл бұрын
@@edwest2263 And I think the reason for that is simple. The Sega CD was an officially created thing straight from Japan that had a significant amount of support from Japan. Meanwhile the 32X was a cobbled together stopgap created entirely for the US market by the US wing of Sega because of the Genesis's continued success here in the states.
@maxxdahl60623 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was a scam. Just a horrible move. They should have just kept using the SVP chip as a 3D upgrade for the genesis.

@JohnDoe-wq5eu3 жыл бұрын
@@maxxdahl6062 I'll be honest I pretty much ignored the 32X and Sega CD completely when they were out so the exact details are not well known to me. I know that most "games" that they advertised for the Sega CD was terrible FMV video based stuff. But I agree they should have just used that chip to extend the life of the Genesis. Both add-ons had serious insignificant pitfalls and even though Sega CD was the better of the two I felt both were fairly superfluous in the long run.

I was wondering why Web of Fire's music sounded familiar. It was done by Brian Schmidt. He did a lot of stuff for EA like Crue Ball and Jungle Strike. Doesn't sound like he was trying that hard for this one. As I recall, though, the fact Web of Fire was released at all was down to it being far enough along that Sega could say "Ship It" and move on. To put it another way, it wasn't finished.
