I took a price of brazing rod and drilled it to fit over the existing front sight. Then I cut it to the correct length and gave it a cone shape and soldered it over the existing sight

In my 72 tears I've learned that you can't make a woman do something she doesn't want to do! Hahaha! Always love your videos, Blackie.

I found it's better to go for a drive, a walk, or hide in the basement. True. Especially before you know if her spiller and burr was trued up by some fool.

You just demonstrated one reason I love purchasing used firearms. Sometimes you can buy a gem that someone else has all tuned up. Excellent video, I have never heard of people tuning the crown of a muzzleloader. Always learning new tricks.

Blackie, Thanks for this and all your videos on percussion revolvers. I’m a subscriber and fan. I’m waiting for a Spiller and Burr kit to arrive today from Dixie Gun Works. It’s like Christmas morning! I plan to follow your lead by distressing and tuning to the best of my ability. I’m looking forward to every step of the process and will refer to your videos regularly. Thanks again.

Love your videos. I’ve had the Spiller & Burr since 2012 and love it. I make everything but the caps for mine. I had to get a Lee bullet mold because .36 cal round ball is impossible to find locally. After I started making my own bullets I also started making my own powder. I can’t make caps so I just stocked up on them, buying about 1000 per year at $13.50+tax per 100. Works out to 14.31 cents per shot. I didn’t have to do any mods to mine. I just aim a lil low up close and dead on at 20 yds. At 30 yds I can still get 6 shots on a paper plate but that’s about my limit. As for the load I generally run 21 grains. But I have loaded as much powder as will fit behind the bullet just for testing. I typically load round ball every other chamber and alternate #4 shot cut out of a 410 shotgun shell for killing copperheads when the population peaks. I’ve even used shot to kill squirrel & rabbit with this pistol. I just stuff wasp nest material in the end of the chamber to hold the shot in. You can also use lard in cold weather.

Blackie, thanks for your answer on the front sight issue on my hawken. I put a shim under it and it tightened up nicely. Hoping to get out today to sight it in.

Ok I would like to see a follow up video on this one to see what comes of a cleaning. Though I can't disagree with the methodology, as never tried what your saying. If everything said is correct and the end of the barrel isn't square, Trueing up the barrel with a lath, then cone a squared up crown maybe the answer. Isn't the current sight on this particular revolver threaded, or friction fit silver solder? I know I have corrected point of impact in my experience. But I have seen some strange things lately out of KZbin videos. For example seen a young fella build a flintlock. When he test fired it of course it shot high and off windage. His answer was to remove the barrel put it in a vice and bend it to point of impact. 🤔left me puzzled. So I asked don't you own a file, and isn't the the front dovetail? He answered yes but does not like the look of a sight not dead center and filed down. Again 🤔 After that I wasted my time trying to explain how many hours are spent each year just in trying to solve proper wood to metal fit as to not effect accuracy as the barrel heats up, but he basically give me a response similar to plugging his ears and going la la la. Hey Blackie- thats an interesting way of obtaining POI. I wonder what would happen if someone lightly filed the front sight post? The 2 BP revolvers I have soot very accurately from the factory and I havnt had to make any adjustments so far. Im looking forward to see how well she does when cleaned because your correct about the fouling affecting everything. Good evening to you and Mrs Blackie. See you tomorrow-
@BLACKIETHOMAS2 жыл бұрын
filing the front sight will make point of impact rise not fall i have deepened the rear sight notch as far as i can go this gun shot 24+ inch high from factory so it requires a bit more work

@@BLACKIETHOMAS Ok- its going to be interesting to see what you shoot. Hopefully it goes as planned-

I always enjoy your content. My 70-some years of living with Murphy's law are all the explanation I need for your showing up at the range with no gun butter. I assume since you called this a hunting load the only shots that count are with a (relatively) clean bore but am curious as to why you choose to go with no wad and/or lube in the load.

So looking for some advice from you blackie. Some of my originals have messed up crowns or holster wear. Should i just continue using them the way they are. or should I modify them to shoot closer to accuracy. 🤔 also i haven't forgotten about the gun and experimental hammer. It got crazy here when my mom past in August and now my dad passing as well. Keep up the great work brother
@georgethomas44832 жыл бұрын
before messing with filing on the frame or crown simply sweat taller front sight on it . those guns were made to shoot aprox 8 inch high at 20 yards belt buckle hold - made for war not hunting
@cupajoe725811 ай бұрын
thanks blackie! did you ever work up a conical load for the spiller and burr? i'm using the 130 grain lee bullet, I size the base using a machinist 3/8" taper collet and a modified pair of pliers to do so. I would prefer to use a conical as it is convenient to have grooves to put the lube in.
@armchairdisaster9058 ай бұрын
Just pull the front sight post out ,and press a taller post in you need a 1/4 inch tall post front sight for that gun to hit point of aim .

Very interesting way of adjusting POI! Pretty incredible idea really and new to me. It’s discouraging that the weapon isn’t calibrated better from the factory. Love the brass frame guns! Nice video.

I think this method was originally improved by working off the forehead impacts on horse thieves. Perhaps.

Wouldn't it be easier to just install a higher front sight to bring the groups down and just bend it a bit to correct the windage?
@Leatherbark2 жыл бұрын
Another cure. The sight on that Spiller and Burr is pressed in. Grab it with pliers and twist and pull it out. Take a piece of Brazing rod and file it to fit or drill out the hole to fit and press it in and file it down to bring the POI up to the POA......................Bob

Little messier but maybe lube the chamber mouths after loading. My 51s and my 58 prefer that from my own testing. ive not noticed a hill pf beans worth of difference between 50/50 beeswax/olive oil vs bore butter in all honesty. Might keep it running longer and keep the fouling softer long term thru shooting.

Great teaching Blackie. I can't wait to do this to my glock. 😉😛 Actually I might correct my 51 navy a bit. (Nobody actually owns a glock. Nobody that has toes left.)

There are one or two videos about putting in a taller front sight. I'd try that first before you mess with the barrel.
