Smart bit of safety that Colin could've tried was to mechanically limit the distance of every hinge for the knives. I saw that bit at 9:58 where one of the knives got caught on the doll and went straight for his arm. I imagine welding a small bit of metal onto the outside of the hinge would be enough to limit the angle so that the knives don't come up and chew your arms to bits.
