Hey everyone! In this video, I talk about spinning longdraw...my nemesis. Okay, so you're not supposed to demonise something that gives you a bit of a hassle because it it can have a psychological effect on you. However, it has stymied me for over a decade. I finally overcame the issues that prevented me from being able to succeed, and I'm sharing it with you today!

Note: This is a really, really old video and I've done a few skeins with longdraw since, but I felt it was worth editing this video and posting it. :)

Thank you for watching! I've been busy getting back on track after the January slump and having to do away work, but I'm doing a wool show, Sodbury Wool Fest, this weekend so that's why I've not been posting regularly! I have two big videos I'm editing so I'll be making shorter (10-ish minute) vlogs as a way to keep updated. Work is definitely happening behind the scenes, but sometimes I run out of time or energy to post anything. See you soon! 😊

Yes would love to see a live stream on longdraw. I have a kromski minstrel and hope to see your wheel set regarding the tension and uptake, brake band material and type of drive to try it similarly.

I would like to see you do long draw on a wheel. I’ve only done long draw once and not very well. I would like to learn how to create a fingering weight yarn. I have a Shetland fleece that I would like to work with. Thanks so much for your videos. Your yarn looks so great and squishy. I would love to see it dyed and what you ultimately create with it.

You could knit a cowl with all that fluff or a really great pair of mittens. There is also cuffs , arm or ankle type cuffs. I would say dye it up because never really know how those crosses dye up till you do it. I am up for a long draw adventure from start to finish. I figured out how to long draw on a drop spindle now I'd like to know how to properly prepare the fiber to be more consistent with it. I know you are having an adventurous time but it is good to see you!

Ooo, a cowl, of course! My brain gives up working when I'm trying to figure out what to do with yarn that isn't my go-to favourite. I should do more videos with longdraw on my supported spindle! I've watched Jacey Boggs do longdraw style with her drop spindle. It would be good to do a side-by-side comparison to see how different they might be. Honestly, I would prefer to not do away work as it takes me away from everything I enjoy and it forces me to do too much in the two days I'm home each week.

Perhaps make a soft and fluffy neck warmer out of it, it looks snuggly.

Maybe I missed it, but could you please explain why you need to handcard and rolag an entire sweater worth of fiber? I would like to learn more about longdraw, so please yes I would love for you to do a video long draw. I have been able to longdraw some raw alpaca fiber ran though my drum carder. (Gasp! Yes, I use my drum carder on alpaca since it has no grease and I'm on a septic system = wash finished skeins.) For me anyway, it seems more about selecting the right individual fleece than the preparation. Everything has to be right about the fleece for me to longdraw. Plus, I believe having dusty fleece makes it far less slippery. To get it to work for me I need 3"+ staple, and it's got to be either extra spongy fleece and bouncy, OR 20 microns or less. I am very interested in learning more because right now I can only longdraw if it's just the right fleece in an extra airy preparation.
