How historically accurate is the Joan of Arc campaign from Age of Empires 2? This video will cover the last two missions, including the Siege of Paris, Joan's capture and trial, as well as the conclusion of the Hundred Year's War.

Totally makes sense, and I believe it's actually meant to capture that historical fact. Unless indeed you meant 15 irl years as stated above :P Actually my preferred method is not too different - displace Burgundy from the walled settlement first, build my own TC inside the walls and seal the gates off and boom, then while booming defeat Shrewsbury's base to the north to prevent him from sending troops to my entrenched position (hopefully you've saved your Bombards and a few Knights), and finish Burgundy and the English main base off, in that order.

the key to winning the last mission relatively easily is to take out the rest of burgundy (purple) immediately after securing your base and getting as many buildings up as possible as well as a castle or two. swarm orange to the north with pikemen/halberds since he basically only produces cavalry and use your own cavalry to defend the pikemen from whatever mangonels/archers orange produces. after that has been done all you need to do is mass paladins, skirmishers and more pikemen and bring along a few trebuchets to take out the bombard towers and castles red has put in the way of your advance.

I think the final mission of the campaign is intended to be a condensed presentation of the entire series of French victories after Joan’s death. That’s why Constable Richemont and La Hire are present and why you fight the Burgundians in the first part of the mission. They definitely wanted to end the campaign on a high note, so the final mission just represents, in a very simplified way, France winning the war.

You forgot to edit a cut over there about the whole set up that they made to make her dress male clothes. She also argued at the trial that she had to wear such kind of clothes in battles because these clothes would be more useful to resist against rape during the war that she was participating (also, the trial that cleaned her from the accusations made by the English was actually conducted by the Inquisition. Interesting to think about this, because one of the reasons that the English were successful with a fake trial was the fact that the trial was made without enough canonical procedures and authorities). This video also omitted a crucial information regarding her letter to Hussites: "She specifically refers to the Hussites' attacks on churches and monasteries, and it may not be coincidence that the letter was sent not long after campaigns by the Hussites which had devastated a significant number of villages in Silesia, Hungary, Lusatia, Meissen, and Saxony - actions against civilians which particularly angered her, judging from the accounts of eyewitnesses who knew her. This is the setting for the threats of military action to stop the Hussites from further campaigns of this type. The violent tone of her ultimatums differs sharply from her other letters and the descriptions by eyewitnesses who said she was normally "sweet-natured" in other circumstances." archive.joan-of-arc.org/joanofarc_letter_march_23_1430.html war and violence is bad and unfortunately St. Joan had to use such words, but hussites were actually practicing horrendous acts as well. But even worst than that, you also missed this particular episode regarding another letter. It is amazing to me that this letter was written under such circumstances. She called for peace (using some strong but not extremely violent terms) with the Duke of Burgundy, and wanted him to be present at the coronation: archive.joan-of-arc.org/joanofarc_letter_july_17_1429.html She seems to be way more polite and reasonable compared to many other kings of her era, according to what we can read about in her letters. She was technically more prone to concentrate war efforts in a defense against Sarracens attacks, according to what we could read in her letters.

Hurrah, thanks for finishing this! I enjoy the history videos and hope you do more. I think it was helpful that you highlighted just how contested the legacy of Joan is. Even before she died, you could see the beginnings of a war about how to interpret her. Both of Joan's trials - the original one leading to her death, and the nullification trial in 1452 - were extremely propagandistic. Was she a witch or a saint? One thinks of, for instance, Shakespeare's 'Henry VI part 1', which wavers back and forth between showing Joan as holy and chaste and showing her as a harlot deceived by evil spirits. It reads as though Shakespeare himself couldn't make up his mind. Today the debate isn't put in the same terms, but I think there is still a fascination with her visions. I think the modern consensus is probably that Joan was sincere and did believe in her visions, but a wide range of naturalistic interpretations are posited. In her day the question was whether they were heavenly or demonic: today we're much more skeptical of both possibilities. For me I'd argue that she did certainly have intense spiritual experiences, even if the cause remains murky. I find it a bit tricky to take the visions entirely at face value - for a start, one of the saints that she claimed to see, St. Catherine of Alexandria, is probably fictional; rather strange to see a vision of a person who never lived, surely? - but Joan's sincerity and her lucidity come out clearly from all accounts of her life. But this is all complicated even further by the patriotism angle. AoE2 puts the question of her visions to the side and focuses its campaign on the birth of French patriotism. This is another very common reading of Joan, using her as a symbol of selfless and courageous devotion to one's nation. Mark Twain said of Joan, "shall not this, and no other, stand for Patriotism through all the ages until time shall end?" Nor is it a coincidence that Joan was canonised in 1920, at a time of resurgent French patriotism. Perhaps her canonisation might have been even earlier, if France had not had troubles with the church and with kings. Joan's piety and royalism didn't always go down well. I guess what I'm saying is that the legend of Joan has grown up over the centuries and become far larger than the girl herself. The idea of Joan of Arc has been taken and weaponised for many causes: French nationalism, triumphant or traditionalist Catholicism, monarchism, and so on. In that furor it's easy to lose sight of what Joan herself would have understood about her cause. She fought for Charles VII, not for an abstract nation of France. She consistently claimed submission to the pope, but defied the directives of church authorities. Were Joan alive today, I'm not sure she would be particularly congenial to either France or the church. Other comments: I'm a bit surprised you didn't talk more about Burgundy in this video. The Burgundians are a regular presence in the campaign and a key player in the Hundred Years' War, but sadly the campaign fails to describe them very much. This is a shame because honestly the events surrounding Burgundy's participation in this phase of the war are fascinating. My recollection is that AoE2 portrays the Burgundians as more like traitors to France or quislings, but that might be a bit unfair. The Burgundians under Philip the Good did side with the English, and later capture Joan and hand her over for trial, but that choice should be contextualised with the fact that Philip's father, John the Fearless, had been murdered during a parley with the dauphin - with the same dauphin whom Joan fought to crown. One can hardly blame Philip of Burgundy for being reluctant to ally with the man who had murdered his father! Nevertheless, in 1435, Philip did opportunistically switch sides, depriving the English of a vital ally and paving the way for the Valois victory in the Hundred Years' War. Ironically, Philip supported a 1440 rebellion against Charles VII by Charles' own son - and in fact the Duc d'Alencon, companion of Joan of Arc in this campaign! - which just goes to show how messy feudal politics could be.

Interesting portion of the Letter to the Hussites; it seemed very harsh-toned, so I looked it up to learn the historical context and, by the way, read the rest of the letter. It seems the Hussites themselves were rather infamous for destructive and plundering behavior, as well as violence against civilians. The articles I've read mention that the destruction of churches and statues of the saints are what brought out this fierceness in Joan's letter. Also, Joan herself mentions in this very letter, both before and after the snippet quoted, that the Hussites' atrocities are what bothers her and what serve as proof of their "sacrilege". Just thought it was interesting to note the portion of the letter that was included. It's part of Spirit's persona that he's supposed to be very objective and logical, and it's cool to see where he lets out a bit of his biases, intentionally or not.

fun fact: etienne de vignolles got his name la hire due to his violence => ire means anger in francais. he was more of a scavenger than a noblemen, scavanging and pillaging even francais villages. he was a close comrade to jean d'ark and even tried to rescue her 1431. in 1443 he died when he accompanied his king karl VII to montaban. the english wiki says he died of an unknown illness, yet the german wiki says, he died of his wounds. 'til today la hire is known in the francais culture for being the name giver of the jack of hearts in french card games.

Although this is a game and not totally accurate, it got me more interested in history and finding out what actually happened at the time the events in the campaigns took place. It is s also rumoured that Joan didn't die being burned and actually survived and someone else was burned. In 1436 a woman appeared in a village near Metz in France and claimed to be Joan and even two of Joan's brothers went to see her and said it was actually Joan. Although some time later she declared herself as an imposter and confessed to King Charles VII. After that she went back to her husband and used the name Claude des Armoises. In 1907 handwriting by Claude des Armoises was compared to known handwriting by Joan before 1431, they were found to be identical, so unless Claude could write exactly like Joan, she might have actually have been Joan.

Who wouldn't drool over lady-knight-saint? Not particularly sane, but infinitely passionate and brave, turning criminals into heroes of war by sheer force of charisma (and religious authority, but man its not that easy to convince everyone that you are saint, especially in Middle Ages when religious figures frequently has more power than state)

Just a suggestion for future topics: since you have done top 5 cavalry, Archer and infantry civs, do you think it possible to do top 5 defensive and top 5 aggressive civs? Or something along those lines? I think that would be pretty neat. PS love your content, hope you don't run out of things to scrupulously observe and investigate in this game any time soon.

Not just 'a' Mark Twain novel. 'The' Mark Twain novel. He spent 12 years on it and repeatedly said it was his best and favorite work. It also happens to be quite thoroughly researched, to the point that historians love it (the game didn't do it justice).

Have you ever played Stronghold Crusader(not 2 or 3)? It's like AOE but more of a builder with emphasis on 80 scenarios (kind of like tropico) and more focus on strategic attacks and economy/base building. I think you'd really dig it. I love your vids and would be awesome to see your take on that game.
