I love the Spit. Never will forget! I was just 10 minutes out of Turweston at 3,000ft when I caught the glint of something about to pass under me fast. I saw it was a mkIX, it was so beautiful, I actually heard it go under me I was in awe. Just one of the most memorable things ever for me. I knew that vintage bird could kick the shit out of my T-67, felt stupid even thinking about it. lol. Paul Bonhomme great, great pilot and so very lucky to get his hands on that beauty.

MH434 was stationed at Hornchurch for most of its WW2 service. My Mum would have seen it flying operationally during the war. I was born in Hornchurch and have an original oil painting of this very aeroplane, spotted at a car boot sale by my Mum. A lucky find. Its great to see the Spitfire can give modern aircraft a good run!

The Supermarine Spitfire was developed by a company that made racing seaplanes, this is a pretty neat video. Nothing like a Merlin either. A few years back it came out that it would be very hard for today's companies to make WW2 style piston engines, just a unique art.

@jxvwp Yes, but they were covering for different tasks. The Spitfire mainly operated as an interceptor, and needed the two 20mm cannons to down bombers, while the P51 operated as an escort, and could use the greater ammo load and wider spread of the smaller MG's to engage other fighters. The spit also had an adaptable wing that could carry different weapon configurations for different mission profiles.

Nigel Lamb knows both acro and spit as he's a master of both. A late mark griffon Spitfire came close to breaking the sound barrier in a dive after WW2. The Spitfire wing hardly changed at all during it's long production run...though the weight of the aircraft almost doubled toward the end marks. A brilliant design thought up in the '30s when the rest of the world was flying biplanes off grass strips.

PenzancePete Absolutely correct with what you say. In the words of Squadron Leader Keith J. MacDonald, now late of RNZAF 485 Squadron, he remarked: "The Spitfire came of age once fitted with the Merlin 60 series engines. The increased performance over the Mark Vb was startling to say the least.". His favorite; the Spitfire LFMk IXe with the Merlin 66 equipped with injection carburettors and armed with two 20mm cannon and two .50 cal machines guns, each fitted inboard of the cannon.

The engine sound is so different between them. The Spit has a roar like a big old muscle car and the racer sounds like a lawn mower by comparsion. You really just can't beat the sound of those huge 1000+ HP piston engines from the good old days.

I am sure the Spitfire was the greatest aircraft of WW2, and certainly one of the greatest aircraft of all time. The Spitfire's airframe was way ahead of it's time. It's power-plant, the Merlin, is without doubt one of the finest pieces of mechanical engineering ever devised by man. The Mustang was a great plane as well, but only after being fitted with that marvelous Merlin engine. Thank you Great Britain....Knowledge and freedom owe you all a great debt!

The Zero had next to no armour, meaning that even small-calibre arms could make it explode into flames or kill the pilot easily. And you are right about the tactics. Once the weaknesses were discovered, the tactics against it were to not engage in a dogfight but to hit it with a barrage of bullets and shells at high closing speed. Once this technique was perfected, the Zero was finished as a fighter.

@gowill2 Absolutely, the Spitfire XVIII was a totally different animal to the baby Spitfires used in the BoB. This one here is the Mk IXb, introduced to counter the FW190 threat as the earlier Spit V really struggled against it. Although Spitfires from the Mk 12 onwards had Griffon engines, the Mk.IX remained active and competitive until the end of the war. Eventually the Mark sixteen was also introduced, but this was a Mk. IX married to the same Packard Merlin engine used in the Mustangs. :-)

some variants had been equiped with 12.7mm machine guns. some variants did have .50 caliber machine guns, but most had the .303 caliber machine guns, later variants of bf109 messerschmitt like the g10 where equipped with 2 13mm machine guns and the 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub was replaced with a mk108 30mm cannon firing through the prop hub.

The Spit first flew in 1936, when the USAAF were chugging around in old biplanes. Then many years later (with the benefit of much development time) they came up with the P-51, yet still without a decent engine. The English gave the Mustang its name, as well as the Lightning and the Boston. While Britain was fighting for its very existence, America was still deciding whether or not to join the fight, and when they finally decided to do so, wanted the world to see how they saved the day.

The movie you are referring to is a 1957 UK movie titled 'The One That Got Away". It is based on the only successful escape and RETURN by an Axis POW from Canada, in this case, by Oberleutnant Franz Von Werra, an Me109 fighter pilot shot down over Britain. Hardy Kruger plays the part of Von Werra, and for it's time, it is a very watchable movie. I recommend you track it down and have a look at it, - but not on a cold day, you'll see what I mean when you watch it.

Why do people argue all the time over "What is the Best?" I think all the Warbirds are Stunning Aircraft, I do admit to loving the Spitfire and ME/BF 109s My own grandad flew a Hawker Typhoon 1B So that is very special to me! We also somehow forget that the pilots on both sides, thought they were doing the right thing for their country, They were not even men, just young boys that became more man than any man alive today. I take my hat off to any of them, what ever side they fought for.
@Chio_OB14 жыл бұрын
@jxvwp I think your right there. The P51 did act as bomber escort for long range missions over Germany, where its job was to protect the Allied bombers. The Spifire was for shooting down German fighters escorting their bombers (leaving the Hurricanes to take out the bombers). It should be noted that the Hurricane was pretty handy as well against often superior German fighter planes.

Finley Lewis The Bf 109 is great but it was a little bit slower than the spitfire however it was ironic that the first bf-109 prototype did have a Rolls Royce engine in it. None the less both of the aircraft were superior in their time. However the power still lies with the pilot of the aircraft, I like them both.

@barrierodliffe41558 жыл бұрын
The Bf 109 is slower if we are talking about the Bf 109 E vs the Spitfire Mk I in the Battle of Britain, not much in it but the Spitfire was generally faster right through the war. the Spitfire Mk IX in 1942 was faster than a Bf 109 F and Spitfire Mk VI, VIII and Mk IX I in 1943 were faster than a Bf 109 G. The Spitfire Mk XIV of late 1943 was faster than any Bf 109.

The US was grateful to have its cousins as allies in WWII. NZ, Oz, GB, and the hosers in Canada. Along with the Free French and Dutch. Each with unique strengths. There is no question the war ended on December 7th, 1941. Once the Axis declared war on the U.S., it was only a matter of time - Not "if" but "when." Churchill said it himself... "the Old World will carry on the struggle until the New World with all its power and might, sets forth to the liberation and rescue of the Old."

@planejunky Yep spot on there, the Spitfire only really had an advantage of better performance at higher speed over the 109's. I guess it would explain why the Spits were tasked with targeting the Luftwaffe fighter escorts and drawing them away from the slow lumbering bombers and into a high speed dogfight where the spitfire excelled, and it was during this time that the Hurricanes would slip in and attack the bomber formations.

The second sentence is true. The FW190 was so devastating that the RAF's fighter operations were curtailed for a while. When the up-engined (Merlin 61 1,560hp or Merlin 63 1,690hp) Mk5 was produced - which, after some modifications to the tail area were carried out - became the Mk9 the balance was tipped back in the Spitfire's favour. When the Griffon engined (2035hp) MkXIV entered service it ate FW190s for breakfast.
@spitfire69015 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I always hear Americans brag about the P-51 and call it a marvel of American engineering, but it was built solely for the RAF, and then it was RAF specifications that made it great. Britain certainly takes credit for the P-51.

My grandfather went through europe and ended the war in Germany, he said the Germans were just ordinary people like us and were glad it was finally over. A friend of the family, Harry, now passed away, first saw action aged 17 serving as a Commando, during a mission in Greece he killed a German soldier with his knife. Another family friend was Charlie, served in the Spanish civil war, then WW2 in the SAS/SBS, unlike most soldiers, there was no room for moralizing or remorse for these men.
@BCSimracing15 жыл бұрын
while that may be, i have two words for that... Bomber Escort. Yes, i understand the Spitfire was built to be an interceptor vs a full out fighter but still, you cant discout the 'Stang just because the Packard didnt do it and the Rolls-Royce did. Both craft are superb machines!
@WeirdNeville11 жыл бұрын
First, he was joking, in the spirit of a good humored battle between the modern unarmed aircraft and an old warbird. Secondly, the guns on the spitfire were internal to the wing, four on each side, and did not protrude from the leading edge. They were covered by cloth squares until fired to keep the bores clean. Only larger cannon fitted to some later models protruded (I believe). So, it has guns, you just can't see them.
@frank239814 жыл бұрын
@jxvwp I have to completely agree with you. As as a "Yank" I have been scolded by many of my fellow Americans for not choosing the Mustang P51. There is just something about that beautiful elliptical wing that I just can't explain. (I happen to be a big fan of the MkIX) The Spit is just simply a gorgeous plane from every angle.
