@@anotheryoutubed This guy gets it. The important things in life are how you feel about the time spent. Not what you get out of the time spent. Getting a college degree has no benefit outside of manipulating others image of you. It does nothing to change your own self image. You're still the same person you were before you got that piece of paper. If you spend that same time skinning a load of wolves in a video game, people would have a very different opinion of you, and it would be equally as effective in changing your own self image. Getting the degree would feel good in that moment. But the time spend getting it would be a forgettable slough. But in the same vein you can hear the nostalgia in Splats voice for a game he played 20 years ago and it had a tangible and positive effect on him. Way more than just getting something from a university for giving them loads of your time and money would give you. I'm simply speaking as a 35 year old guy who played these kinds of games and got my degree a decade ago. I have fonder memories of returning to FFXI in college and the release of FF14 1.0 towards the end of my degree than actually being in school. I can barely remember being in class. These IN-WORLD dungeons without instancing or zone lines remind me a hell of a lot of Vanguard. It was made by the creator of EQ and eventually also purchased by Sony but this time to defund and kill the project so it didn't compete with EQ. Vanguard had a 20s level giant ant hill in the ground dungeon that you could eventually kill the prince and queen etc. at the bottom. Extremely fun and easy to get lost in. No in game map, just your game knowledge and experience as a guide for the next party. Fighting down for an hour to reach a camp where you farm Named spawns for a few more hours was a blast ... just living in their dungeon for a few hours while you harvest them for resources.

In its current state, I would say most old school players will find 50+ hours of fun to be had even as an unfinished game and is well worth playing. For those who are not familiar with the old school, this game may still end up being awesome, but you are probably better off waiting until the game is closer to actual release because without the nostalgia, all the unfinished and clunkiness would probably just be too annoying right now (things like clunky UI is on the list to be improved, char creation, lore etc.) but when the game is release ready it will hopefully be a smooth old fashioned game which can appeal to those who missed out on the golden age of MMOs

On the one hand, this seems interesting. On the other: as an original EQ1 player, the name "Brad McQuaid" raises the hair on the back of my neck (and not in a good way). This is currently the case (the UI is ass, eg the lack of level-sorting for spells at a vendor), so... we'll see. This is currently CA$52. EQ2 is free. The fact that it takes a long time to mine that ore makes upgrading your mining pick valuable. That’s what is missing from modern MMOs: they have removed any inconveniences to the point that everything becomes quick and easy, which takes away the sense of progression and investment in a character. It may seem like a small, tedious thing, but having to spend time crafting a better pickaxe or doing the gathering quests to get a better pickaxe adds depth to the experience. Edit: it took me a little time to detox from the dopamine-fueled loot piñata experience of WoW, but after playing Pantheon for awhile I am enjoying the slower pace. You should give it a try.

Really? I always felt that the modern take with daily and weekly quests to farm and a big flashing arrow pointing you in the right direction is what makes a game feel like a job. Things like that kill the fun for me because your brain just shuts off and you just wait for the flashy guidance to click on a certain button at a certain time. And if you don't do it every day (like in a job) you feel like you are missing out. Which is exactly what these studios want. They want to bind you to the game with these psychological tricks. It doesn't feel good at all when doint it. You just feel bad if you don't do it. This game here sure takes a lot of time, but the immersion is huge. It doesn't matter that the pace is so slow, because everything feels more meaningful and you actually have to think about what you are doing. Also regarding the harvesting time, it is as Splatter said. You upgrade your tools to reduce that time. It isn't just long to waste your time, but it is meant to create a sense of achievement when you upgrade it.

This was a very good in depth video on the game, that said. I wouldn't play it since it has two conflicting design elements. to echo what you said in the 3-4 min mark which hit the nail on the head. "Successor to EQ" to me means. EQ but more solo friendly- similiar to what current EQ is now with mercs with some QOL attached. doesn't have to be major stuff, just small stuff like skill presets for easy swapping, It was re-inforced by 1. no overworld map and 2. crafting your own gear. but then you have elements of highly incentivized overworld grouping to clear spots for good resource nodes, various enemy camps etc. i can only imagine the headache later on if the best way to level- or really the only way- was to group up to kill mobs like in EQ. combine that with no overworld map , it will make it very difficult to sync up with people- especially if you are different races you might not even see each other naturally. I mean there is a reason why the #1 most popular addon for EQ is a better, heavily detailed, map! so while i think its a nice idea to not have a map- its just kinda ironic they mention EQ without realizing that vast majority of EQ players used map addons cause the ingame map was traaaash and they didnt want to deal with it. this introduces a more hardcore mindset of players. which contradicts "Successor to EQ" since that would mean its basically EQ with a different coat of paint. and the leave your stuff on death and have to find it again while also trying to not get stuck in a death cycle from mob with huge aggro ranges, can move faster then you, and have severe leash distances is a total trash mechanic. if they added some QOl to where you were idk immune/invisible to mobs until you get your stuff back then i would give it a try. the walk back and xp loss is fair enough.

Great video! ..Just want to mention for those that want to know, lore is a thing in Pantheon, and will get implemented with time - Perception, Discover clues, dialogues, and outcomes that change based on your adventures and the choices you’ve made along the way. Hone your intuition to see the world in ways others cannot and unravel the mystery with the Perception System. And also iirc map will be implemented as well, but it will not have a GPS, it will be fog of war and hopefully other interesting features to it.

I've been racking my brain trying to wrap my head around that phrase. I can't figure it out. Is it like, you like something so much you continue doing it till it runs down your leg and into your sock? Do other people say this phrase? Am I too east coast to understand? I am sure I could google it, but like this game, some things you just need to work out on your own or with others facing the same struggle.
@FableVАй бұрын
@@loveless131It’s an old EQ turn of phrase. There were mobs that had multiple hour (or day) respawn timers, and some of those even had placeholder mobs that could spawn instead. Even further, some had variable spawn windows, so you couldn’t just set a timer and come back. Because of all this, people would just stay in one place for days, not wanting to miss any possible chance of this rare monster spawning. The joke is that they’re pooping in socks because they can’t leave the keyboard to go to the bathroom and risk losing the camp.

Yup, its been in development for a while now. And yes, they are trying to follow the coattails of the "classic MMOs of the olden days" which is a big no to me. Games evolved for a reason, and I ain't about to go back. Shit, while I have nostalgia for those old days I just don't want to relieve that pain and suffering, because that's exactly what it was. Everything took forever, everything was punishing, there was no respect for the player's time, everything had to be done in groups, looking back, it was just not good. The whole "social MMO" term, it was social because you literally had nothing else to do but BE social, you were constantly waiting on some bullshit so you talked to people while doing those things. Making and maintaining a group was a pain in the ass. I took those rose tinted glasses off a long time ago. I mean just look at vanilla WoW, that game had WAY more respect for your time than the likes of Everquest and FInal Fantasy XI, and I STILL won't go back to WoW Classic, been there done that, I was there at ground zero, I don't want to go back.

@@Otazihswill they cut off a lot of that originally I agree with you it was a bit too punishing but you're kind of wrong about the whole meeting people to group to be social because that is a real thing that does need exist in MMO and it does help MMO become what it is there's plenty of examples like City of heroes which you can now play for free. They managed to do it better without making it to punishing but a little bit on the shallow side.

I was seriously looking forward to this game for years, but in it's current state I can't recommend it. I like most of the hardcore elements, but *No Map* is a big deal breaker. Especially if I have to find my corpse after death. Feels like a QoL feature that should exist no matter what era we are in. Pantheon requires a lot from you. More than most people are willing to give and even less who have time to do so. I want this game to succeed, but I can only see the player base being a group of people with no kids and/or are already retired, which will alienate a large portion of the player base. Which would be fine (the game doesn't have to appeal to everyone), but the kiss of death in any "social MMO" in the last 20 years has always been lack of players. I hope this game finds it's mark, gets way more content, and (hopefully) the Lead designer will acquiesce on 1 or 2 of the QoL features needed to reduce mental load.
@AaronQ64Ай бұрын
a niche game. I have kids and lack tons of free time and im still excited for this but I would agree the thing they have to do is draw the eq emulator crowd or they will end up dead in the water. That being said nothing else exists that is this style of game other than EQ so theres not much competition for those of us who want this style of game. Also my guess is folks will mod the game to add a map or find ways to hack in QoL things and with a team this small theres no way they will be able to completely kill that from happening.

There's a reason for group finders, global chats/mails etc. Players have always found ways to work around the limitations of a game. They went on Teamspeak and Ventrilo, used ICQ, IRC, Jabber to organise. This creates sub-groups within the larger player base, whose communications is completely separate from the rest. On the one hand, this can make new players feel extremely isolated when nobody is going to talk to them ingame. On the other: when a friend group is not locked into the system of the game world, it's very easy to pick up and leave for a different game. So now we've got all bells and whistles included in the game world.

OG EQ player here (pre-Velious, anyway). MMOs haven't just changed in the theme park direction. Software has also greatly advanced. If you know Path of Exile and the massive impact poe trade had on the vanilla experience, you can guess where this is going. The classic "shout LFG for party" can be circumvented by third-party solutions like Discord, with bots to handle finding matches and so on, if desired. We just have way better tools than mIRC / AOL Online. We also have higher expectations. The stiffness and jank on display is acceptable for an otherwise innovative solo developer title. This is a 10-year project headed by a (now deceased) legendary MMO developer. It shouldn't be as stiff as Everquest, because it was never intending to be what it was. Everquest's limitations included being a 3D game before GPUs were even commonplace. We can capture that aesthetic without sacrificing 25 years (a quarter-century!) of industry advancements. Likewise, this character creator is shameful. Advancements range from trailblazers of ugly faces like Bethesda's Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, to more mature systems as found in MMOs Black Desert Online or EVE Online. Perhaps the conservative approaches often seen in RPGs, from the Mass Effect Trilogy, Cyberpunk 2077, or Baldur's Gate 3 represent a more reasonable expectation for what we should expect from a new MMO. Character creation in Pantheon is essentially a rip-off of the EQ Luclin graphics update in 2001 (which finally required some graphics muscle with a whopping *_16MB VRAM_* ). Vanguard, McQuaid's previous MMO from 2007, had a more robust system than this. I have very rose-tinted glasses for the experiences I had in Everquest and do not fault anyone trying to bring that experience to the modern age. I do fault such a weak attempt. I'm sorry for anyone on the project this hurts. I wish I could find a reason to like this one, but I can't.
@SerdoaАй бұрын
I share your viewpoint. I did play DAoC back in the day but I can not see myself playing this game ever. There are ideas I can get behind, player-driven economy or not having mailboxes. But for example with the quests it is only a matter of time (and success) that someone will offer an overlay, showing every quest NPC and pointing to where you need to go, together with suggestions which minimum level one should have for them. I would like to see a different system than having quest markers all over the place and the player barely interacting with any NPC. But that is an issue to solve not by taking away tools but by adding reasons for why the player should interact with these NPCs. That said I'm pretty certain that I am simply not the target group for this project and I wish them all the best.
