To twist the knife even further... The flowers here are blue roses. They can symbolize a "miracle," such as with Kiriyama Kazuya (the boy) bringing Kawahara Mizuki (the girl) the roses to celebrate her "miracle" of a recovery. But they can also mean "impossible," with how no matter how hard everyone wanted and tried to bring him back, it was impossible for them to save Miya from dying, and how impossible it feels for Mizuki to move on after him. Welp. Off I go to a corner.

Something about they lyrics “If we were to grant the wish we wished the most, someone else will lose something that they hold close” makes me think. Mizuki’s vision was obviously deteriorating, and the fact that she was amitted so fast tells us she was probably going blind. After the eyepatch is removed, she instantly lights up, pointing to the window and insinuating she has fully recovered, right before she is told Miya is in critical condition. This much is pretty clear in the video. But, how likely is it that Miya would suddenly die today, of all days? Also, Mizuki recovers extremely quickly from an ailment that is practically untreatable- in just one or two surgeries. In the video, it’s implied to be a miracle, which brings me back to the song. I think the lyrics mean two things; First, at the end of the song, it represents Mizuki’s realization that she cannot bring Miya back to life, because it would upset the balance of nature. She knows even then, someone else would lose someone they loved if Miya wouldn’t have died, so she vows to try and move on. That’s the meaning of the final balcony scene, and I’m sure most walked away with that message. But, with that being said, there’s a second meaning that I didn’t realize until now. My thought is Miya wished he was in Mizuki’s place in the hospital, so she wouldn’t suffer. He would give even his life if that meant his fiancé would be healthy. And that’s exactly what he did. His “wish” was granted, and on the day Mizuki makes her miraculous recovery, he dies. As he’s dying, he realizes at least part of this, which is why he’s smiling when he fades into petals. He doesn’t regret making his wish, but he also knows the consequences. Mizuki might be able to see, but she’s lost “something that she holds close.” Him. He cries but tells her to stay strong, that he loves her, that he did this all for her. Sorry if this was long-winded, but I hope others understand what I mean. ^^
