I'm not sure if that is a good thing or if its a bad thing. Because it seems like nowadays so many studios and/or directors are going with this extended cinematic universe direction since the success of the MCU. Even though Shyamalan did have the idea of a "Unbreakable" trilogy way back when it first came out back in 2000.

As soon as she told the girl to pee on herself I knew that she'd been molested. it's a tactic that I've heard of before. and she did notice he was ocd from when he started cleaning out the car when he jumped in before abducting them. anyways I loved this movie and screamed "OH MY GOD" when the reveal happened. McAvoy was great too. it's a shame he'll likely be forgotten next Oscar season.

Yeah, I caught that immediately as well. I remember one of the defense tactics if someone is trying to sexually assault you is to literally go on yourself. It disgusts the attacker enough to either leave, or distract him enough to get away. Either way, as soon as that part in the movie came up I knew she was knowledgeable about avoiding sexual assault and thought she had maybe experienced something in the past.

One thing I find cool about Split's poster is that it actually has an important plot point explained on it. There are 3 shadows of people & one of the beast, but if you look closer you see the silhouette of a man, woman and child, representing Patricia Dennis & Hedwig's alliance against the other personalities to release the beast.

I think we may have also witnessed an origin of another important character with the girl...she may be more important later on. She is also like McAvoy's character, but different. She has a similar story of tragedy and suffering, but she is not split. She could be the antithesis of his Horde.

For me, that "pee on yourself" part was so brilliant. As someone who has had things happen to me in my past, I immediately knew that she had gone through something, and each and every flashback got more and more intense. By the end of the movie, I had a full blown anxiety attack, and couldn't even make the drive home. It was executed very well, and while I had to recover from actually watching the movie, I love how they handled her story and character. The three main actors in the movie gave wonderful performances, and the end scene brought the entire movie to a whole level that I did not see coming. Well done, Shyamalan. Well done.

Matt Schumacher the best way for shamalan to make a good third movie is to keep the same restraint and bring in a new character that ends up connecting the two movies so that people understand the other movies in context of the third. It has to have its original atmosphere too so it's not just a rehash and he has too conclude it and end it there but that comes with restraint. If shamalan has matured as a creator I think he will make that good sequel

I re-watched Unbreakable and I caught something very interesting that Mr. Glass's mom said to Bruce Willis's character about what her son said about heroes and villains (which also ties to the next movie) "There's always two kinds. The soldier villain (The Horde) who fights the hero with his hands, and then there's the real threat. The brilliant and evil arch enemy who fights the hero with his mind (Mr. Glass)."

EW interviewed M. Night about the film, particularly the ending. He stated that the character of Kevin was in the original script of Unbreakable and was going to be a major villain/introductory character for David Dunne to face instead of the Orange Suit Man, even going so far as breaking those three girls out of the underground room. So this character has always been around, since day one. Link to the article: ew.com/movies/2017/01/20/split-m-night-shyamalan-ending-interview/

10/10 twist. Also, Kevin was from the orignal draft of unbreakable. Shamwow said he was supposed to be the original "villain" instead of the man in the orange suit (aside from Mr. Glass reveal ofc). And the plot of the kidnapped girls was Bruce Willis's first "mission" as a hero, but he cut that out later on after a lot of back and forth.

The opposite of The Horde is Casey ... The Horde developed personalities to deal with abuse, Casey developed survival instinct and wears her scars on the outside, rather than the inside. So if there is a third movie to complete the trilogy, and Mr. Glass does return, I'd also expect Casey to play a big part in this. Obviously there is more than one villain, so it makes sense David Dunn is not the only hero.

Regarding Casey Cooke's advice I don't think it was all just knowing how to defend yourself. She was clearly observing McAvoy from the get go, and saw him use a piece of cloth, handkerchief?, to pick up some decorations in the car and wipe down the folding chair before sitting. She had reason to believe he was overly cleanly with those actions. I will not, however, deny that some of that is likely due to her own experiences of what to do.

I lost it in the theater. I was blown away as soon as they started playing the theme song. The one thing I'm wondering that you didn't mention is with Casey Cooke's character. Assuming there is a third film could her character be in it? She may develop 'powers.' She presumably didn't go back with her uncle, and maybe the sheer amount of trauma she has experienced in her life makes her realize her strength and potential. The question then becomes does she join The Horde who is broken and evolved, or Dunn and the unbreakable?

[SPOILER ALERT] The Horde mentions the longing for someone to believe that they all exist, I feel that if anyone could get in touch with the horde and manipulate those feelings (or maybe just Hedwig) it's Mr Glass. Mr. Glass would definitely believe in and respect the Horde movement. He's had time in prison to mature his mind and his villainy.

this is what I think of the movie as a standalone movie. throughout the movie it has a underlying theme. That if you have a mental illness, or had traumatic episodes, society would label you as a lesser person than the norm. the idea I got from this, is that his psyche created the beast to not only protect the horde, but to devour the weak. That people who have mental illness are the ones that are the strongest. He kills the two girls because they were weak. He let's the girl live because she is like him, and has been damaged. That she deserves to live because of that strength. the beasts sole purpose is to rid the world of the type of people who never understood kevin.. the way the brain can change your bodies chemistry, like the one that needed insulin was a prime example. That is how the beast can become something terrifying and impenetrable skin.. It was really well done. and then the ending my eyes got wide and I was like no way! I could see the next sequel last I've ten more years and still be great! as long as the cast stays intact and no one passes away..

I saw the movie 2 dasy ago and I liked it a lot. The thing is I didn't understand the Unbreakable connection when I saw it. Now that I watched Unbreakable yesterday I really want a sequel but I don't want them to rush just because the hype is up now so they would do well next summer etc. Clearly Shyamalan has to have small budget to push him to keep it simple and rely on the actors/actresses input to make a great movie.

I read a comment that explained that Mr Glass birthed both a super hero and a super villain. If you remember the scene where mcavoy placed the flowers at the train before his transformation into the beast, it's possible his father lost his life on the same train that Willis was on at the beginning of unbreakable. mcavoy lost his father and continued to be abused by his mother, creating his condition. Thus creating The Hoard. That blew my mind even further.

I love the tone and pace of the Unbreakable/Split universe. Where almost all superhero movies are filled with nonstop action and CGI, these movies are much more realistic.

Fan Theory: The janitor in the orange jumpsuit from Unbreakable was also an invulnerable and super strong villain. Reasons: 1) 1) He very confidently, smugly and effortlessly opened the screen door with only one hand while the house’s owner was struggling to keep it closed using both arms. 2) 2) He was able to push David Dunn into the swimming pool from the balcony. The bar scene from Man of Steel should remind you what happens when an ordinary man tries to push a superhuman. 3) 3) It took David Dunn a pretty long time to strangle him, even with his super strength.

Well, that might be because the guy in the orange jumpsuit was originally supposed to be Kevin. But Shamwow removed him from the script.

The reason she said "pee on yourself", is because he was a germophobe (cleaning the dashboard in the car he kidnapped them in, & when he wiped the chair before he sat down) and she knew he would freak out over the pee

Shyamalan has had this idea for a while. The Hoard was in the original Unbreakable script, then he sort of laid the character aside until now. He has also said he wants the third film to be able to stand on it's own. This is what he has said: "This third movie needs to have its own idea. The high concept of that final movie can't be, 'It's the final Unbreakable.' There has to be something about it that makes it its own movie. These two [Split and Unbreakable] are their own movies. That's when I'll be happiest. When [the last one] is its own movie. In a way, I can say that it just can be watched by itself." I don't think it will be a straightforward sequel. And after seeing Split, I hope it won't be.

I'd love it if they could also connect the sixth sense seeing dead people seems like a super power to me only problem is explaining Bruce Willis in both prior movies long lost brother perhaps. Then when HJO is grown up he's watching the news finds out about hoard uses his dead connects to figure out who unbreakable is they team up to face the hoarde and Mr glass. looks like they are about to lose then Ana taylor joy shows up and tips the scales. and the whole battle takes place in the village.

I was freaking out and I don't think anyone understood why. If it didn't have that ending the whole movie would've been too "unrealistic" for me but now my whole frame of reference changed and when I looked at it from the perspective that it is a villain origin film then it just enhanced the whole experience for me.

Hey guys, on when Shyamalan made this character, he said he wrote Mcavoy's character back in 99' when he wrote Unbreakable but didn't find a way to put it in that movie so he saved for 16 years i guess.

The reporter said that the McAvoy was called the Horde. It got the waitress to think about how their was another infamous criminal who was called a name by the press/authorities (think how some serial killers are called the Zodiac killer or Son of Sam). Also I don't think Mr. Glass will be getting out of prison. Remember what Elijah's mother said "But he says there's always two kinds; there's the soldier villain, who fights the hero with his hands; and then there's the real threat, the brilliant and evil archenemy, who fights the hero with his mind." I see Mr. Glass working as more of a Hannibal Lecter type villain. Messing with David from the insane asylum. On that note, we have two villain names so David Dunn needs a hero name. Something like the Unbreakable Man or the Hooded Hero.

I think if there is another installment in the Unbreakable universe, Mr. Glass will be like Hannibal Lecter's character in both Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs. Somebody that Bruce Willis' character (David Dunn) goes to for advice and information (like Clarice's relationship with Lecter), while at the same time reaching out to Macavoy's Beast characer (much like Lecter did with the Tooth Fairy) to exact his revenge on David Dunn.
