They actually are the "deep state" that the republicans always fearmonger about. They hate the deep state because they can't blockade it like they can the house. The 2023-2024 US house of representatives has been the least productive in US history, a sharp contrast with the 2021-2022 which was one of the most productive. The republicans just jam up everything with their bogus Biden impeachments and witchhunts and rituals and all the other nonsense. They can do that because their message is that government doesn't work. So if they fuck things up in government that's just proof that they were right. That is one of the reasons being a democrat is much harder than being a republican. To be a democrat you have to be good at your job, to be a republican it's good to be bad at your job.

In 2021, the U.S. spent 17.8 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) just on health care, which is nearly twice as much as the average OECD country. Healthcare spending per person in the U.S. was nearly two times higher than in the closest country to us, which is Germany (which gives free healthcare to those that qualify), and our health insurance alone then was at least four times higher than in South Korea. The only way to counter this greed is either price controls or a windfall profits tax, but the political will doesn't exist for either. This corporate greed would be a little easier to stomach if corporations at least paid their fair share in taxes and didn't have so many subsidies and tax loopholes that allow them to avoid paying taxes so that they would at least help to support our social safety net, but alas, TFG ended that with his massive corporate tax cuts.

Even citizens of developed and rich nations bear the burden of patented products such 500 dollars inhalers (here in Brazil, you can possibly get one of these for free tanks to our universal healthcare system called SUS, despite the dismantling of public services induced by neoliberalism in last three decades). I generally haven't liked her, but this point is definitely interesting. The patent system is definitely a source of many problems, and needs review. And these kinds of targeted fixes could be quite beneficial. As for $500 for an inhaler... More than 90% of Americans have insurance. And I've bought them without insurance, and they definitely weren't anywhere near that expensive (I remember $85 when I last did some years ago - which I did admittedly think was more expensive than it should have been). Exaggeration makes your point seem bigger... But, that approach also creates automatic pushback from people who aren't inclined to be on your side. So one has to be careful about such things. Because otherwise you feed into division. Also, as far as it goes, you can get an asthma inhaler in some countries for $0.50. Although, that could also be seen as a byproduct of purchasing power differences between the currencies. Still, interesting though... Why not import from cheaper countries while the advantage remains? They benefit and you also benefit.

That’s insane how an inhaler could be $500 in one country and $20 everywhere else. I wouldn’t start accusing people of greed though but price fixing for sure. If I needed an inhaler, for example, I could pay $20 out of pocket for that no problem, but $500 is the equivalent of a rental payment on a place with my paycheck. You could get more people willing to take care of themselves if the price for healthcare was more reasonable than taking a loan every time you have the sniffles or an asthma attack.
