After seeing one of the most divisive Star Wars films ever, the allies have lots of opinions. Some of us loved the way it steered the story in a radically new direction, others weren't fans of the humor or sub-plots. Can they find balance?

I’m totally in the Brad and Brandon camp. Movie was more on the disappointing side for me, and it was irking me how much Kyle and Huber were defending it. But Huber calls it at the end, both sides of the opinion are going to get hated on hahaha. Thought it was funny that both Brad and Brandon were on the more negative side and were wearing black. Possible Rule of Two Sith going on at EZA hahah

Early on, the way Huber defends it as if it couldn't have been done better. Like Snoke's story, obviously they wouldn't do it the way Huber described it. There's a million ways they could've shown a little more of Snoke's influence, rise to power and motivations.

Geoffrey Kandolo I disagree. It’s a philosophical line about the nature of where the conflict comes from. The point the film was trying to make is that (ugh) if everyone is good and bad and there are no heroes, then there still have to be some qualities that seperate the good from the bad. And that is that the good guys fight for love

where was the love when that purple hair woman sacrificed herself? xD if only she told her plans earlier and saved us from the Casino Planet BS and Po's mutiny, maybe someone would have loved her enough to save her... ah well. They still love Po in the end btw, that cheeky scamp, they loved him enough to let him get away with it xD FK ME This movie.

Brandon and Brad are so right, I agree so much with them! I liked the movie but there are a lot of problems. It wants so much to surprise you that it doesn't care to think if that surprise makes sense to the story as a whole. This movie feels like a standalone movie and fails as a sequel to The Force Awakens.

I've been thinking about the comparison between Snoke and The Emperor, and I think I've come to the main issue. It's true that we get a comparable amount of information about each character before they're axed. The difference is, we understand who the Emperor is in the whole context of the movies. The context of the original trilogy already places the Emperor into power - when the original Star Wars came out, we could just assume that this is how the galaxy was for an undisclosed time prior to the movie (a backstory which would of course be explored in the prequels). The issue with Snoke, in comparison, is that we know what events led to this situation, and yet they don't account for Snoke. For the emperor, we didn't need to know how he came to power because that was the status quo from the start; it's part of the premise. For Snoke, we already KNEW the status quo (end of Return of the Jedi), and we need to know how he changed it, how he became part of this existing story. Still, I really enjoyed this movie, and I think that really comes down to strength in the characters of Rey, Kylo, and Luke (I realize that the latter of these is a divisive opinion, but I really enjoyed Luke's arc through the movie, especially his scene with Yoda and his exchange with Rey the third time they discuss what happened with Kylo's training).
@Hazz3r
@Hazz3r 6 жыл бұрын
This really didn't occur to me and really changed my perspective a bit. This problem could quite easily have been solved too. Just have him monologue more during the death scene. Talk about how he did what he did, how he became so powerful and became Supreme Leader. Maybe make Kylo killing him a little more elaborate to account for a longer monologue.
@JazGalaxy
@JazGalaxy 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the problem isn’t that Snoke died, or that Rey’s parents are nobody. People who can’t analyze movies will sieze on these things because they can’t quite articulate what the real problem is, but the real problem is very much the fact that Snoke was set up to be more by The Force Awakens. So when he is shown and then killed within minutes, it feels incredibly “off”. It’s just bad film making.

Kyle lost 15 IQ points in this video. It's like someone is firing an X-ray machine at his brain . Hyperspace as a weapon was a STUPID thing for them to do they way they did it. Especially the level of damage they were able to pull off with it. Now we need to ask why this wasn't done countless times before. There are junker shit ships all over the Galaxy that can be used in this way... And one ship can take out half a fleet? Absolutely no writing discipline.
@Allen-ug7oi

I guarantee in episode 9 someone will bring up "Why don't we just ram it from hyperspace like Holdo did?" and the response is "Oh no they have a shield for that now" or "It only works with capital ships and we don't have any to spare". If they don't somehow explain away that Holdo's kamikaze was a one-time fluke then all space battles will be plagued by "Why didn't they just ram the enemy at lightspeed?"

The reason why we don't need a backstory/explanation for the Emperor and why we do need one for Snoke is because Episode 8 IS A SEQUEL and we need an explanation for how the First Order came about and how Snoke became "Supreme Leader" because at the end of Episode 6 its basically assumed that the empire died with the Emperor!!!

It's just a bad movie. It's not just a bad Star Wars movie, it's a bad movie on its own. Also I like how Finn isn't allowed to make decisions or do anything himself. He's not even allowed to die.
@Ayoul

Yep, because of the Rose character, he was robbed of having any substance in the movie. It wasn't enough that she served no purpose at all, her character also needed to drag Finn down with her.
@WarrenEBB
@WarrenEBB 6 жыл бұрын
disagree. - it's a great movie on it's own. but it's a crap star wars movie as part of the franchise. - Finn stands up for Rose (recognizing the importance of her necklace, a call back to how he tried to stand up for Rey repeatedly in last movie). He does go after phasma. I guess you're saying all the decisions he made, and the things he did, were muddled by other characters getting involved? i don't see how that's a prob. but ok. in the end, finn's arc in this movie is to learn to care about more than himself. (starts off trying to run away by himself, end up willing to sacrifice himself for the resistance)
@robkoh7290
@robkoh7290 6 жыл бұрын
It's both a bad Star Wars movie and fundamentally a bad movie. It was visually striking, yes and the cinematography was pretty decent, and has some cool scenes. Doesn't save it from being a mess of writing. TLJ is full of massive plot holes, inconsistent or badly-written characters and plot lines that go nowhere. Much of the "twists and turns" are just subversion for the sake of subversion. - Rey is a staggeringly awful character. She's great at everything, everyone loves/trusts her upon meeting her, doesn't pay for consequences of poor choices, TFA starts her as virtuous and courageous and she's still the same in TLJ. No growth outside of just getting stronger than she already is, and nothing ever feels like an actual struggle or uphill battle. She's honestly more Mary Sue than the titular character the trope was named after. I could very much see this being a character that some 13 year old would write into their SW fan fiction. Yeah she's "stubborn" and supposedly has separation issues about her parents, but it never hinders her in any way, and she never pays a price for these minuscule "flaws". You know what Luke and Anakin got for being brash and stubborn? One less hand. - Finn and especially Rose are pointless in this film. Their entire side quest doesn't even need to happen if Holdo would just explain her fucking plan to Poe. And I can't think of a single thing that Rose did to contribute to anything in the film. Their failed quest doesn't even do anything or change anything in the story. The Finn comment was mostly a joke but here's my real problem with him: I'm sick of Finn being this useless comic relief character (who's apparently also a janitor), who's character arc is "don't run away, fight for someone else" in TWO films now. At least he got fight Phasma, but she's never shown to be that competent outside of her books, so who cares. - Holdo is a trash character, withholding her evac plan does nothing other than provide a weak "twist" to the audience, it makes no sense in-universe. She actually has no reason NOT to just tell the entire ship what the evac plan is, instead of her shitty speech about "hope" and "the dawn" or whatever. She's given two chances to explain to Poe, but she pulls rank like an asshole and tells him off instead. (But that's okay she likes hotheads like him. What?) It actually hurts the situation more than it helps, as she manages to lower morale enough to the point where some crew members (including people from the bridge crew) were okay to go along with Poe's mutiny. - Phasma is a joke. They treat their conflict like she has this deep history with Finn. She literally doesn't care who he is, he's a number, he's always been a number to her. It's not like they were friends, or lovers before he went AWOL. As far as the movies have shown me, he's nobody. She comes into the scene and fights Finn with her track and field javelin, and "dies". I honestly feel bad for Gwendolyn Christie. - The overall story amounts to nothing. When Kylo said to "let old things die" I thought that was an interesting motivation for a villain. And then he said "hurr durr join me and we'll rule over a new world". Cool, back to being a villain again. First Order sans Snoke, vs Rebellion again. - Rich people planet was poorly paced and almost unnecessary. Serves as little more than a way to shove in a shallow "rich people are bad" message. - Benicio del Toro's character is wasted. He's also a clumsy plot contrivance. They were looking for the guy at the table, you know the ONE guy that can slip them under the FO's radar. Except wait, this rando guy in a cell can do it too for some reason. Teaches Finn about a theme of Gray areas. They then proceed to do nothing with that theme. Fucks off and does something else. Worst of all is what they did to Luke. They took an optimistic character and destroyed him. The one man that found a glimmer of light in the 2nd most evil man in the galaxy...and he nearly kill Kylo when he sees potential for darkness. And then fucks off to an island, NOT to fix his mistakes, but to die. Which begs the question as to why he left behind a star map to his location, if he didn't want to be found. He then proceeds to get his ass kicked and lectured by our Mary Sue protag. And instead of one final showing of power, where gets to show the galaxy why he's considered a Legend....it's just projection, he never left his island. Now he's dead. Hope you weren't expecting a lightsaber fight from Luke for the first time in 30 years. On top of that, modern colloquialisms and lowest common denominator Marvel humor are going to date this movie pretty hard.

Excellent discussion and breakdown of your feelings on this movie. I liked it, thought it worked great bringing great emotional development to a lot of the characters. I didn't dig the casino scenes all that much as a whole, but thought they had a lot of great character to them, and I like them tied to the greater arc of learning about what it means to be a hero and learning about failure. Loved failure as a theme, and all of the Luke, Rey, Kylo and Snoke stuff was on point. If I had to criticise anything, it would be the way that JJ set up this movie. He planted a lot of mystery boxes in The Force Awakens, but didn't fill them with any answers, leaving it to the next director to fill in. I feel like that's the same problem that Lost had: create a lot of great questions and mysteries, then leave someone else to fill in the gaps. This sets them up for failure, though, since the mystery will always be more intriguing than the answers. Rian went out of his way to escape that shadow and still create an emotionally captivating story. The result still feels like the Last Jedi is two movies tied to each other by their franchise; a movie I thought was okay, Poe Learns to Fail, and a movie that I loved, Rey and Kylo Feel the Force.

What bothers me about the "subverting expectations" angle is that it actually requires the viewer to have expectations. The Star Wars lore means nothing to me so I had no expectations for Snoke or Rey or anybody shrouded in ''mystery'. I just wanted an entertaining movie; and I didn't get that. I got a long, boring sci-fi movie intermittently punctuated by Star Wars references. This was a movie for Star Wars fans who like to intellectualize Star Wars.

The scene where Luke throws the lightsaber, is a good metaphor for the whole movie. Anything that was intresting and well developed plot wise was thrown out. The movie didn't even make sense as a sequel to Force Awakens. So many dropped plot points and plot holes that it ruines the whole movie. It's ok to change things up, and try different things, but you don't do that in the middle of a trilogy.

Dick Deepinsideher exactly. And the underlying message was “ the things you like are stupid and your stupid for liking them”. Johnson repeatedly uses characters as his speakerbox to talk directly to the audience just to say this, and it often doesn’t even make sense. Like Snoke, the guy who projects himself as a 100 foot tall head, making fun of Kylo’s helmet and telling him it’s stupid and he looks ridiculous in it. Like, what? 1/5 of the characters in Star Wars wear helmets. In fact, in Snokes chambers, he’s the only one WITHOUT a helmet! His criticism makes no sense except to tell the audience that helmets are childish and Star Wars is childish.

The first 5 mins of Episode 9 should start with the Knights of Ren hunting various characters/assassinating important leaders (Resistance/New Republic advocates) on different planets/systems, in so doing helps paint a picture of who or what The First Order are and what they are doing in the larger picture of the galaxy. Then, when they return to learn what had happened during their time away, we see all 6 Knights enter the Snoke throne room, where -- for the only moment in the film -- they each take off their masks and we see what they look like. Some are human and some are alien. In this moment, every line that each of them speaks gives us a clear indicator as to who they are, their distinct personalities (JJ Abrams needs to watch My Hero Academia for tips on setting up characters quickly. A lot of this should have been done in The Force Awakens) They debate over whether Kylo Ren should be the new Supreme Leader and Kylo reminds them that he is the descendant of Vader and that Rey is their real enemy. They question how Rey, an untrained Jedi nobody was able to come in and best Kylo AND Snoke AND the Red Guard dudes. And in 15mins you've set up the premise of the final movie: The Knights of Ren cut through the Resistance to capture Rey. It happens to be the big set piece of the movie: The bad guys pulling off a heist to kidnap Rey. Along the way, you show cool things that we've never really seen before in a Star Wars film, like in-fighting between the Sith. There's been subtle stuff before like Vader plotting to kill the Emperor and rule with Luke but not like this. I'm talking about a scene where they capture Rey, and one of the Knights wants to kill her right then and there, but he is stopped by one of the others and literally a fight breaks out between them. One of the things missing in TLJ is a lack of saber-on-saber battles. The climax of the film is, they capture Rey finally, She tells some of the Knights about how she and Kylo took out Snoke -- confirming their suspicions. The Knights of Ren turn on Kylo, when that happens some of the other Knights go to kill Rey as revenge for Snoke. It's an orgy of lightsaber battles.

One thing that has been bothering me is how everyone seems to be harping on how under developed Phasma was. All I can think about is one of the most popular star wars characters from the original trilogy was Bobba Fett. Only has what 2 lines in two films and what less then 10 min of screen time. I loved the movie, and also have my complaints about it. Like snoke, I would have like to have a little more context. There was no big haha moment that I think was lacking. But I will end with, that light speed head-on crash was pretty sweet how they slowed it all down.

Why would it matter if Snoke had a backstory? Because it would give the character meaning. Not for the other characters necessarily, but for the viewer. Meaning promotes a connection between the characters and the audience. Put it simply it would matter more when Snoke died if we knew who he was and his importance to the other characters' evolution.

I was hoping for a broader scale context. "We blew off the senate so now the whole fate of the galaxy hangs in a 5 ship battle" That's what I really liked about Clone Wars and the prequels in general. You could see there were many powers at play and there were battlefields all across the galaxy.

To the point about Poe and Holdo, what was the lesson that Poe learned? You should trust blind authority, because they always know better than you. Also not great thinking on Holdo to not just tell Poe the plan. Of all the people to keep in the dark, why would you not tell the one guy who can clearly, and did, trigger a mutiny.

In reference to 10:13 , After Hux saw Snoke was dead and Kylo was unconscious, Hux started to draw out his blaster. He was going to shoot unconscious Kylo dead for his treachery, but Kylo started to get up so to ensure his survival he does what Kylo said. You can tell how he glared at him silently when barking commands to HUX'S army, etc. Kylo is far from the leader of the First Order right now, he's just too strong for a mutiny at the moment. I'm sure that will change as he proves himself an even more inept leader due to his ambition and emotions.

In regards to Kylo fooling Snoke, what was impressive was the act of Kylo killing Snoke. He fooled him by thinking ambiguously, Snoke closed his eyes and was so sure because he was reading Kylo's mind. He was actually literally seeing his thoughts, that way there was no way Kylo could lie. At all. Snoke closed his eyes not out of arrogance, but to be POSITIVE of what was happening by seeing the "truth". Kylo aiming at Rey wasn't done to set up dramatic tension in a "will he, won't he" moment, it was because he knew his thoughts were being read. He couldn't think about how he wanted to use the force to turn on Lukes saber and kill Snoke, he had to actually aim his saber at Rey and think about how he is "Aiming the lightsaber at his target" to be able to truthfully use the force and position Luke's blade at Snoke to fool him. The reason Snoke oddly called out about how he is about to turn on the saber and "cut down his true enemy" was because Kylo was using the force to turn on Luke's blade, he had to have a conscious thought about doing so to will it to happen. Kylo fooled Snoke by letting him see the truth, but leaving it up to interpretation, which is a huge theme in this movie. Kylo and Rey both saw the truth, but out of context and thought it meant that they both thought the other was going to join them when the time came. Loved the review and opinion's guys, keep making up the amazing content. I know you won't read any of this, but if you, or any one else who would want to talk about it more, or tell me their take on what happened, please do!

my opinion on this movie is basically that the highs are 10 times higher than force awakens the lows are 10 times lower than the force awakens its very inconsistent and I dont doubt that a lot of that was Disney pressuring the director to make a more light-hearted movie

Prety sure Poe realizes the consequences of his actions once their transport ships are being targeted and he realizes it's because he sent Rose and Finn over to Snoke's ship. If he had never allowed them to go, the transport ships wouldn't have been attacked. The entirety of the events seemed set up just to teach Poe some lessons: The lesson of command (And following Orders) The lesson of heroism (And its faults) The lesson of sacrifice (And its purpose)

For me the first half dragged, up until they killed Snoke i was in the meh camp. After that I loved it. The casino part could of easily been cut and the first space battle I thought was silly. The slow moving bombers were very silly logical, so easily taken out I'm shocked even one made it. But I loved the dynamic between Rey and Kylo and Luke at the end.

Glad to see Brad defend his boy Hux. He deserves better than to be the butt of constant jokes. I hope we get to see Hux betray Kylo at some point, because the's the only one that seemed to be affected by Snoke's death in any way. Both Kylo and Rey don't change whatsoever after his death, so all they did was kill off a good source of conflict. The only reason we want to know Snoke's background is because he served NO PURPOSE in the film as it is. They spent 15 minutes hyping up Snoke IN THIS FILM, which has no payoff or effect on anyone. Jones: "It's weird to be punished for hoping." Pretty much sums up the film. The film doesn't take the more interesting option at any point, but it loves to present the opportunities like it's clever. Kylo doesn't turn good, Rey doesn't turn bad, they don't team up besides the one battle, kill each other, or change in any way. Leia doesn't die, Finn doesn't die, and Luke died of laziness, so the Resistance is still missing its "spark". Rey's parents being nobodies is fine, except she learns nothing from Luke, and doesn't join Kylo when its revealed, so she doesn't change at all, and the mystery was wasted. Oh, but Poe learned to accept orders from superiors without question, and Rey learned how to move rocks to save the day! The film would've been better served without Holdo at all. Poe would've been put in charge when Leia was incapacitated and he could've made the rash decisions there, and Leia could've taught him his lesson when she comes to. Then Leia could've piloted the cruiser and her sacrifice would've cemented the lesson and sparked the rest of her forces. Combined with the bazillion plotholes regarding the premise in general, this movie has no reason to exist. It's a sub-par film with the bad humor, pacing and plotholes, but it's an even worse "episode of Star Wars" in the way it squashes everything from Ep. 7 and sets up nothing interesting for Ep. 9. The only chance they have is to advance the timeline like 10-20 years, set up an entirely new scenario in the text crawl, and make this film irrelevant. Huber: "Star Wars is for kids." Empire Strikes Back was my favorite of the films when I was like... 5, but that movie has a torture scene, makes Darth Vader legitimately scary, and deals with some pretty heavy philosophy about the nature of the Light/Dark Side. The puppet is funny for 5 minutes, then turns super scary (0_0 "You will be. You will be."). None of the themes in that movie are for kids, but I loved it. The last half of Return of the Jedi was my next favorite, and not because of the Ewoks.

Great Spoiler Mode - your diverse opinions really reflected the divisiveness of this film, as well as the conflicting opinions of my own. On one hand I was super captivated when Snoke was killed off, but on the other hand, I didn't really know who he was - except that he obviously was strong with the Force. Lots of highlights in the movie, but a lot of lowlights too - especially the forced Marvel humour. Like Damiani pointed out, humour was reserved the characters where it naturally fit their personalities, like Han, but in this film it was forced onto almost every character. Luke responding "Alright that's pretty much nowhere" to Rey telling him where she was from was so jarring in the delivery - not because Mark Hamill made a bad delivery, but because the tone of the delivery (which he of course was directed to do) didn't fit his character or the scene. After my first viewing I liked the movie, but I was very conflicted, mostly because of the Marvel humour and porgs invading the screen over and over. On the second viewing I was much more accepting of the weird/bad stuff, like the porgs, so I liked it a little better the second time around, but the film definitely has problems - not to mention the Finn/Rose sidestory. Like Huber, I liked the intent, but the execution was a bit off. Alright, I'm basically just echoing statements from the Allies, so I'm just gonna end it here. I would have liked for the video to be at least 20 minutes longer, preferably an hour, as you guys didn't have time to disect every major plot point in the movie, given that its runtime is two and a half hours. But overall, great discussion guys! L&R

*SPOILERS* People REALLY need to recognize that you can love a movie whilst criticizing it. I’m so tired of hearing “_____ wasn’t good.” being followed by “But I liked it.” like cool dude, you liked it, I don’t get why you can’t accept that that doesn’t make it good. I love watching Sharkboy and Lavagirl. It’s one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen. I can point out it’s flaws and still enjoy it. I liked TLJ, Leia flying in space was bad, Holdo and the entire premise of that plot line was bad, the casino sub plot was bad, the numerous plot holes were bad, the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren was fucking amazing, the core casts performances (specifically Daisy Ridley) were great. I liked this movie, that doesn’t make all criticisms null and void. Most standoffish was Huber’s “I’m glad they’re dead.” How in the hell does Phasma being lackluster in TFA make her being horrible in this movie a good thing? This isn’t Jar Jar, her personality wasn’t developed, she had the room to grow so treating her even worse in TLJ is TERRIBLE like Jones was saying. Again, i don’t want anyone to not enjoy this movie, i just want people to criticize where criticism is due.

Snoke isn't dead. When you look at Luke when he is using the force projection he is younger and can keep things appear there longer. Snoke also appears younger and was testing Kylo to see if he would actually betray him, that scene was designed to be a big reveal next movie. It is going to be a moment when Kylo sees that Snoke isn't dead tries to go after him again and fails realizing he isn't as strong as he thought and scrambles back to Rey asking for help.

I cant help but think about Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty. The story subverts expectations after coming off of the previous title. Another similarity to Sons of Liberty is having a main character experience a lack of information causing frustration for them and viewer. These things hurt Sons of Liberty on release but became highly regarded over time, I think the same will happen for The Last Jedi.
