Welcome to Spoken Sanskrit Series! This is a MOOC series produced by students at Columbia University. By initiating this program, we would like to take part in the Sanskrit Revival Movement, and introduce the seemingly intimidating language in a very approachable and accessible way to our daily.
In our first episode "Basic Introductions", we introduced a couple of words and phrases. Here is a list of them:
Hello: namo nama:
My name is Abhinav: mama nāma abhinava:
What is your name?: bhavata: nāma kim?
How are you?: bhavān katham asti?
I’m doing well: aham samyak asmi
Thank you: dhanyavāda:
Nice to meet you: melanena bahu santoṣa:

In an era when most students who are forced to learn Sanskrit as second or third language in a few schools in India, are cribbing and cursing why they have to learn a dead language, hats off to you Abhinav and Yang for going all out to promote the great language ! All the best ! Will eagerly await the forthcoming videos -)

Probably because there not taught why they should learn. If I was told is school there is a language that’s more scientific than any other and so precise you can convey anything, I would have understood there are a lot of things we know that have been lost that I can learn if I learn Sanskrit and interpret the words the right way. Shiva will bless anyone who attempts to undertake this language .

There are 3 crore students who learn Samskrit in school, college & veda pathashalas (though majority of them do not speak). "The number is still decreasing "...... But actually the number of volunteers is increasing day by day. So We, karyakartas, should not give a destitute look for the language. Let us say that "the goal to reach may be in crores and the reality is in lakhs yet , the number is INCREASING day by day"....... एषः मम विनम्रा प्रार्थना | वदतु संस्कृतम् , जयतु भारतम्

Great efforts, keep it up! People from western countries love Sanskrit because the language gives them peace and by reciting Sanskrit slokas they feel relaxation in their hearts. Anxiety, depression and nervousness; these are some major problems in USA and UK these days. Most of the people do not have other issues like financial problem, stereotypical society as we have in India but they certainly face lots of anxiety and depression due to lack of meditative awareness. That's why they are turning towards Sanskrit as the language is invented by saints for delivering deep spiritual messages. If you pay attention to The Western news channels you will find most of the people from USA and UK are behaving like muddle headed, kind of psycho; they are doing plastic surgeries, some of them are changing their genders, some are doing ridiculous things in the name of passion.. the list goes on and on. So, this is what happens if you are financially wealthy but you don't know yourself through spirituality. The message is that foreigners are giving respect to Sanskrit , we should start learning it too. 🙏😊 - Nikunj Narendra

Thank you Yang and Abhinav. The lessons are very useful. I am using these videos for my kids to encourage them to speak in Sanskrit. The lessons are structured really good with demos and reviews. Keep going.
