See this first episode you're discussing highlights my main issue with post-movie SpongeBob. I feel like the first three seasons of the show were very much about celebrating these characters' own unique quirks, it's literally a more positive take on Rocko's Modern Life where you see characters like SpongeBob and Patrick still find their own way into modern society and be loved just for being who they are. It's why the show has such strong queer-positive undertones, especially in the movie where the end message is celebrating SpongeBob's eccentricities. But then these other fucking seasons like to actively mock and demonize those with differences, with SpongeBob and Patrick often being the source of everyone's misery, and making jokes about their odd traits in a way that feels like it's more at their expense. Not only is it lazy comedy, but it also directly flies in the face of what Hillenburg envisioned for this series, and can genuinely come off as quite insensitive towards groups that were once its target demographic.

So someone pointed out how classist depictions of idiots in bad media are, and how it's often indicators of poverty that make them stupid looking. This spongebob episode is full of that. For example, the gross cavity gum thing only makes sense if you assume this is how he plugs that hole instead of going to the dentist. That’s the only reason a real person would have done that. Also they literally meet in a cardboard box instead of a real building. Like they’re smart enough to form said society and stuff and this entire club, they should be able to buy a clubhouse. Unless they can’t afford anything. Either the story is conflating being dumb with being poor, or treats the trappings of poverty as things that people have when they’re too dumb to do better. Respect glass onion for showing how stupidity can be disguised as genius and how dumb people can make a lot of money.

The show despite having some diamonds in the rough these days is It shouldn't be a case of diamonds in the rough. The good episodes grow fewer and farther between. That's not a healthy sign and I can't just watch every episode just to sift through the mud for something okay. I get where you're coming from, though! There's definitely a lot of cynicism weighing down most peoples' entire opinions of things, so reading a bunch of those comments can really hurt! Patrick being immune to the stupid salsa and saving the day is a good concept, and I know it's a good concept because they did it in Futurama (S3E9 "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid") and it was good there. Like, it wasn't the greatest episode, but they clearly like. Futurama wrote a story about a thing with a logical beginning, middle, and end. I am not sure Salsa Imbecilicus fits that criteria. You know what's bad? If you have a specific thing you want to see happen even though it's inactionable and you're an animator. Just make a h*ntai? Why would you involve childrens cartoons. Modern Spongebob is already like, 90% of the way to Elsagate style content. Is it that hard to leave your ~preferences~ at the door? I'm on a couple of different spectrums (and am also a certified Sand Witch) so I don't know how much going to work and thinking about stuff that is not safe for it while you're there is normal, but this just feels like an easily solvable problem. Like, just don't.
