Fun fact, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both Ex-Mormons in real life. Also, one of the directors of the film is married to a Mormon.

Might be soon "was married to a Mormon" and it can go both ways. Or as I am told repeatedly, members now say "a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints" cause abbreviations are out and being a long winded bore not getting to the point is in (if one has ever watched any general conference, that aspect is no surprise) Also..the religious leaders love excommunication.

The trailer piqued my interest, but this review has my attention. 😀 Tangent: I couldn't tell you how many times we had Mormons or JWs come to our door growing up, no matter how many times we turned them away. One woman even just waltzed into my house while I was playing video games and left her pamphlets with me, asking if she could use the toilet before she left. Being too stunned (and hyper-focused on MK 3), I said okay and had to laugh about it later. Makes the plot of this movie more intriguing to me.

Where the movie shined for me was their conversation before they start moving more into the house. I enjoyed this one and felt uncomfortable and even tense during some moments. I'm very curious about this film and hearing your thoughts on it, it kinda reminded me of The Sunset Limited, one my favorite films ever. It's not a horror film, it's a drama, but the set up about a philosophical confrontation on the topic of religion in a very enclosed space is quite similar.

One of my really good friends growing up was Mormon and he had a large family. I attended several of their services at their church, as well. They were very faithful to their practices and I got some first hand exposure to their religion. They were very strict on certain things. We played a lot of basketball together through his church but he was literally forbidden* to watch or/play sports on Sundays. They would also have family gatherings in their living room nightly with everyone who lived in the home. They definitely had a great sense of togetherness that was palpable. It was definitely different ,but it was interesting to learn about their “ways” so to speak.

I recently watched Megan is Missing and expected Heretic to be disturbing for similar reasons, but it actually wasn't that scary imho. I think Heretic asked for too much suspension of disbelief and wasn't as twisty and/or revelatory as it needed to be to pull off the premise. The dungeon in Barbarian, by comparison, felt more believable and organic to the world it resided in. At the end of the day, I just didn't really understand why Hugh's character felt so strongly about religion that he went through all the trouble he did. It's not a totally bad watch, but I feel like I was misled by all the hype. Part of the problem is that there's been so many other great horror films recently.

I thought I’d offer my perspective as an ex-Mormon. Heretic is a very good, tense, thrilling film. However, I am almost ten years out of the church, so from a philosophical angle I felt like I had heard all of these arguments before. It would have been very impactful when I was questioning my faith or fresh out of it. That being said, I did like the nuanced performances of Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. They didn’t present themselves at zealots, which is how most Mormon people are.

Okay, so I saw Heretic over the weekend, and it was a mixed bag for me. I loved the first half of the film, very psychological. The acting was first-rate by all three leads. There was a time or two that I thought Hugh Grant might have been channeling Michael Caine, at least in his voice delivery. I appreciate the story that the film was trying to convey and as a person of faith, I found nothing offensive in the film. The villain's motivations are all his own. I guess I felt that the second half of the film did go a little overboard with some shock value that wasn't there in the first half. I would still recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good dark, twisty thriller and I did get caught off-guard by a couple of the twists. Overall, I gave it a 6/10 and that's mainly for some of the more disgusting elements in the second half. Hope this review was vague enough, because I still hope people who love old-school thrillers will see it.

Religious horror hits really close to home with me, so I really appreciated this film and the conversations it had. I don't know how I feel about how it was conducted, though. I kept thinking what does he do the other 360ish days of the year when he doesn't get religious visitors. I got a lot of Barbarian vibes with the absurdity of how some of the things went, and I really didn't like Barbarian. I think this film was far better than Barbarian, but at the same time, I can see how the absurdity of the smoke and mirrors in the last half of the movie is commentary in itself. So is that clever, then? Maybe. There is just so much to think about with Heretic.
