as someone who’s hard to get with horror movies, SMILE 2 got me. last movie to get me was Hereditary back in 2018. terrifying, and this movie was heart pounding terror, anxiety filled, terrifying. no spoilers but the scene involving a special care clinic. gawd, what an awful awful awful situation. i wanted to die in my seat because i myself wouldn’t have known what to do. there’s all kinds of horror in SMILE 2 for everyone to even the hilarious horror that’s similar to Terrifier 3. also the filmmaking is incredible. what could have been a cringy modern horror movie is surprisingly amazing

I think Smile (S1) & Smile 2 (S2) are similar to Knives Out (KO) and Glass Onion (GO). KO was centered on a family death and even though they were fairly wealthy, the family had a good cross section of family archetypes that most could relate to. You also had the “every person” in the medical care taker of the victim. In GO it was about the a Billionaire (think Elon Musk level) and his high tech party with his rich friends & celebrities. This was a setting and characters that not many could relate to on a personal level. This why people liked KO better than GO. I think the same thing is happening with S1 & S2. You could relate more to the lead character and her world in S1, than the lead character and her world in S2. I think the S2 pop star scenario takes most people out of the movie to a certain extent.
@umjamesАй бұрын
Also keep in mind how hard it is to reproduce the success of a first horror movie with a sequel. Most of the success of the original is that you don't know what's happening or why. In sequels, you do know and it's harder to be surprised once the mystery is gone.
@dbgreene9020Ай бұрын
So interesting! I found the 2nd one better than the first. It felt like they took all the parts that worked in the original Smile and expanded upon those things. And NAOMI SCOTT was AMAZING. It felt like a trippy and dreamy stylistically. I agree that it didn't really add anything to the lore which was a bit disappointing. But I do like this one better.

Smile scared the crap out of me when I saw it and took me a few watches to get past feeling terrified everytime I watch it. Now that I've seen Smile 2 I no longer can be afraid by the first one. This one had me physically covering my eyes near the end which I never do. I think Parker Finn is a master at jump scares. He really does them in a way that personally for me I do not see coming. I'll try and guess where it will go but then get my expectations turned upside down. I think what really unsettles me about the Smile movies is the horror can be always. It doesn't matter if our main character is in a group of loved ones, has the lights on at home, in front of a giant crowd or in the daylight they are not safe anywhere or safe at anytime. That makes it as an audience member feel like we arent safe either. I was sitting there the whole time unsure what I could trust as reality and where a scare was going to come from. I especially hate how the main character has no idea what is real. That freaks me out so much. Such as moments in the film where Skye thinks someone is out to get her because of her dressing room or thinking she is safe with other people when she's not. I think the movie just ends up so intense because you never are given a break. There is no scene where you go okay I can relax now. Ending also had me fucked up. No spoiler here but I think the ending is the epitome of being safe no where and having no real sense of what is reality. Anyways that was a long comment but I really enjoyed Smile 2 yet also detested it because I'm honestly scared 😂😅

Saw it last night, loved it! Agree that I wish it did more with the lore apart from one scene which could be quite interesting for expanding the lore if they do a sequel (trying not to spoil anything) Also glad they didn’t ruin the best parts in the trailer like they did for the jumpscare in the first movie (the jumpscare in the smile 2 trailer is meh but makes for good marketing I guess) Basically reckon for better or worse if you liked the first you’ll like this one
@swestttttАй бұрын
Good comment. I had (have, because I’ve not seen 2 yet) hopes that it would really play upon the idea that often people put on a mask (smile) to try to show others that they’re “OK mentally… It’s the entire “putting on a brave face” sorta thing. I mostly loved the first one for its theme around that, as well as themes on generational trauma, loss, grief and mental illness, but felt it veered away from being truly excellent because they didn’t amp that theme up around “smiling equals wellness” enough, and sorta devolved in the final act into predictable. I wanted it really to show how people put on a mask for the benefit and comfort of others. That said, I’m seeing a lot of people who like this one more, so I still have high hopes!
@50framesofhorrorАй бұрын
I agree. I enjoyed this one but prefer the first one for all the reasons you mentioned. Plus, I left with more questions about the monster design, and the ending is too predictable. On the other hand, Naomi Scott ate this role up.

Thank for the review, Emma. I thought the first film had a really creepy premise and plenty of scares. I did feel that the story itself was pretty average, and it reminded me of other recent films that use the "entity that cannot be defeated" since you can't defeat a mental/emotional construct (i.e. It Follows, The Ring, The Grudge). Nevertheless, I will check out the sequel just to see how much creepier they can make this entity. I might wait until video though, which I did with the first film.

I think this movie was amazing. Naomi Scott's performance was beyond anything I could have hoped. I did absolutely love the first film, but this one just delves deeper into what mental illness really is. And, as someone who has personally dealt with someone very close to them having a mental illness, I felt like it touched on that even more so. I feel like it made you realize that everyone's reality is different and you can only know what your reality is. No one else's. I did see this in theatres on it's premier day, and had no idea someone I very much care for would commit suicide a mere month later.

I feel like some of the lore was subtly given to us in this one. The entity says “I love being in your skin” or something like that… and then proceeds to use her fame to infect a massive amount of people. That kinda implies that it’s just been lurking around, gettin meals and infecting where and when it was convenient. Like this was the first time it realized it could do more than it has been doing. And it makes me want MORE. Bring on the sequels and prequels and in-between-quels.

Supernatural isn't my thing, but the first one had that 'The Ring' voodoo going on that grabbed me...

Wait you mean to tell us that this sequel actually smiles venomously? Well I plan to laugh gleefully while watching in delight.

Well, before I finished your take, I rented 1st Smile, I liked it and the character build up good, but I don’t want to get caught up in a possible never ending series,it wasn’t that good, thanks anyway for the heads up,

IMO answers never benefit a horror movie. It’s much scarier when there’s no motive.

The worst part of modern horror is over explaining everything. And manufactured jump scares with the music sting.

I watched the first one recently for the second time and for me Smile 2 is waaaay more violent, I was shocked. And I loved much more than the first one

In terms of anxiety, I felt like this one put its foot on the gas and just didn’t let up. I felt pinned to my seat with the social anxiety portions and just not knowing what was real or not real.

I just saw it and I like it a lot. But really Naomi Scott is such an incredible actor she sold every emotion to me. And I liked the ‘Being Famous’ angle a lot because we don’t see a character like that in a movie like this. Also the gore took me by surprise, was’t expecting that. And if we have to believe that ending Smile 3 will be INSANE.

I noticed that most women bypass Naomi's excellent acting) maybe it's envy...

I wasn't a fan of Smile but it looks like a really creative way to show a curse following someone who is smiled at all the time. And I frickin love Naomi Scott.

I loved the first movie, so looking forward to this one!

I can't wait to see this film this week. Great review.

I think the scores are too low for this one and it honestly had some elements like The Substance. The lead in smile 2 was AMAZING. Namoi Scott def deserved to be mentioned. I do agree on the investigation and origin or maybe a connection to the lead in part 1 would of been nice but doesnt take away from how GREAT this movie was.

Both funny and scary sounds perfect for a sequel to Smile.

I was starting to worry the movie was no good cause everyone's embargo is very close to premiere but it seems like its really good. I am getting a ticket

okay i just watch Smile 2 as someone who hated the first movie. I prefer this one i feel like the scenes are good the executions are there but the storyline fell flat we learned almost nothing new about the "disease" but Naomi's acting is incredible and the soundtrack of this movie has been on repeat for me lol. i brought my aunt to see the movie with me (she didn't watch the first one but i explain the lore to her") she fell as sleep 3 times lol. i gave this movie overall a 6/10. it's a fun movie. i gave the first movie 4/10

the first one fkd with my head for days 😅. have no issue watching a horror & moving on but something about smile really stuck with me. EDIT - just saw this, uhhh. honestly i wasn’t a big fan. i agree with you about the mystery. to me most of it was kinda lame

Jack Nicholson's son in this is funny, seeing as his dad is certainly known for his scary smile !

Naomi Scott was freaking amazing. On the same level as Toni Collete in Hereditary.
@brocoolhurstАй бұрын
I really enjoyed the performance of Naomi Scott and the concept of it being centred on a pop star - who spends her life getting smiled at. But this one really didn't work as well for me, and I unexpectedly loved the first. I thought the first half was great but thought the second half was kinda cheap. I hated how much they threw plot away as delusion when I was all in for it and I thought it was a shame. So many amazing visual moments but that second half just messed the film up for me
@brocoolhurstАй бұрын
I also felt like so much of the plot was just retreading the same beats we knew about the entity that we learnt in the first film without shedding any new light on it.
