Thanks for watching! To recap my thoughts (in case you were completely lost) Connection Theory simply suggests that Deltarune's use of the word "power" is tied to the idea of memories, with those memories being the power that connects us to things. Those memories connect us to Undertale, those memories connect us to Deltarune, and perhaps those memories connect us to Gaster. Gaster and Dess aren't ACTUALLY dead, which is what allows this power, this "connection" to keep them around in ways. It's why Noelle is tied to glitches- because she's still connected to an individual lost in the "code." This power is what will allow us to bring them back... Anyways, make sure to like and subscribe! (What? You're here to complain about the part where the mic was popping? No you're not.)

This, may hold a bit more than that. Deltarune is supposedly a parallel story to undertale, and what you described is pretty close to how you actually beat undertale's pacifist route. You use your memories of your friends to bring them back from what is effectively death to help beat Asriel, and then use memory (and the power of several hundred souls) to save Asriel too! Returning him to his original form, At least for a little bit. And then everyone forgets about the fight. Asriel is put back into memory. Flowey is still around, but Asriel was being eroded from the collective memory of monsters for a while. Flowey's own resets started with him visiting Toriel and Asgore, but that didn't last. Then it never happened in the first place. The memorial statue was moved to waterfall at some point, and while monsters still knew about Asriel, he isn't brought up by name very often. Once the barrier is broken there isn't much reason to repeat the story of his death. It was just one more reason the monsters wanted to escape the Underground and fight back against humanity. This even (sort of) extends to the neutral route. You just have to get all the human souls on your side once, then they'll rebel against flowey even after he resets to the start of the fight- remembering your calls for help. And in Geno... the connections are loose but an argument can be made that "Chara" is gaining more solidified memories/personality through your actions. But the most important part of geno is that it always remembers that you did it, even into a pacifist route. (unless you mess with the files, erasing that memory) You mentioned sans, but the Memoryheads are also something with this theory. "Come join the fun" was always a weird phrase that I know a few theorists have picked at.

I think I have something too add about memory's. in Undertale there is also a fair amount of stuff related to memories like the memory heads and that they give you bad memory's and this is in the true lab (something very connected to Gaster). I think this could be broken down into 2 different "ideas" of memories !the good ones and the bad ones! obviously I think that Gaster represents the bad ones for many reasons and I think in a way that Gaster might still be "alive" like Dess is but all the remains are the 'bad memories" of him. and I think that Dess represents the good ones! I think deltarune could be a game not only be a game about memories but about good ones and bad ones. to sum it up. maybe by Looking too far into deltarune or doing the "weird routes" all that we will end up finding is "bad memories" or maybe even creating bad memories like in the snowgrave route (or maybe even after the secret bosses just look at Kris's reaction after fighting Spamton in the regular route). and we will end up "reviving Gaster" only after finding or creating enough bad memory's while trying to find Dess. But maybe if we just leave things alone "letting sleeping dogs lie" than in a sense Dess will live on forever with only our good memories of her. her living in our hearts! and us not forgetting her is the only way the only true way that she will ever live again by us not forgetting about her and her living in our hearts. that is the only true way to not let Dess die or for her to essentially live on forever! just a theory tho

One thing I wanna point out in regards to what the Goners are is that in the True Lab it’s pointed out that they were specifically looking for monsters that had “Fallen Down”. This is presumably a state outside of death given that monster bodies disintegrate on death and they would’ve presumably had a body to actually inject Determination into, but it’s worth noting that *these specific monsters* were worried to have become Goners. Why is this relevant? Well why exactly did Toby choose to refer to whatever happens to monsters here as “Falling Down”? Well for one not only is Gaster notably found inside whatever The Depths are, which obviously point to being somewhere below with the name, but for two and arguably the more interesting point is that Frisk is shown to have LITERALLY fallen down into the Underground at the very start of the game, and what happens immediately after is that we as the player gain control of them as our protagonist. Now that’s not necessarily to say oh yeah Frisk is dead the whole time in Undertale, that’s a bit much, but it’s worth noting that if Goners are supposedly vessels that can be used by a host to control for whatever reason, and the Fallen Down monsters in the True Lab were worried to be Goners, AND the game makes a point to involve us players as our specific entities in the game world, our protagonist literally falling down before we puppet them around for 5 hours or so is an insane detail if true. Crackpot idea but I wanted to share
@Junnneee10 ай бұрын
This is really interesting. I think you've hit the nail on the head with a lot of these points, but I also think there's also probably something we've all overlooked and forgotten(hehe) as well. An ending where we drag Dess and Gaster back... Now that would be very interesting indeed.

Your theory reminds me of a quote from a 1992 horror film called Candyman: “I am the writing on the wall, the whisper in the classroom. Still watching this, but before I forget, I want to note that Hyper Goner is unlikely to be related to the goners. Legends of Localization: Book 3 revealed that Toby informed Undertale's translation team that this attack's name is a reference to Goner, the ultimate attack by the final boss of Final Fantasy VI. He also noted that retaining the reference isn't important, only that it should sound "extremely powerful and cool." The team decided to translate is as Hyper Missing, since Missing is the Japanese name of that attack.

Honestly, I get what you are putting down with the whole "memories" thing. In my opinion it can go two ways(assuming every chapter will have a weird route) In the normal route, we are gonna find Dess. The character that actually matters to the story of deltarune, that matters to Noelle, to Kris, and the entire town we see. While, in the weird route, we are gonna find Gaster. Gaster since Undertale came out has been a fandom obsession, a player obsession. And, the weird route in general is meant to be where the player takes more control. Making Kris do things they don't want to do, whispering in Noelle's ear, etc. We/The Player are steering the game in the direction we want for own devices, for our own wants. If this goes exactly how I proposed it, with the player being why gaster is brought back, while Kris and Noelle the actual characters are how Dess comes back... you could make deltarune one big commentary on Fandom as a whole. Have you ever watched a show and went "Oh, but why they didn't do this? This is what I wanted!" Like you had expectations for something to happen, but the writers/directors/creators had no intention of actually doing that thing? Thats what could Deltarune could be leading towards in a more literal sense. The fandom wants Gaster. The fandom wants an answer to the mystery we've been having for the last 8 years. So, what do we do? We force it, we play god, and we get what we want. It's like you stole someone's script and wrote it the way you wanted it. This could all be stupid ranting due to the fact that Toby has said its only one ending, but hey its just a theory A GAME THE-

I do love how this and your Angel’s Heaven theory play into each other. There’s been a popular resurgence of the idea that Gaster probably isn’t this maniacal sinister boogeyman, that he is friend and not foe… which I appreciate. But I don’t think the sinister feeling of his mystery is for the lols either. I really think that Gaster will end up being a very tragic, very haunting villain indeed. As terrifying and threatening, yet as understandable and sympathetic, as the secret bosses we’ve seen so far. The kind of really memorable, gut wrenching character that you feel caught between wanting to hug and wanting to point a crucifix at. Someone truly scary, not just because of the threat he poses, but also because of the things that happened TO him, what he’s GOING through. The kind of really meaningful, compelling character that Toby is really good at writing.

i do really like connections being a running theme! ive always considered the main thesis of deltarune with relation to the question of "what is the point of art?" being "the relationships it lets you build", and you can see this with kris and susie. with regards to memories being power, i think that holds a lot of weight given stuff like the memoryheads and bad memories from undertale (i think P-Rise(??) did a theory to the effect of the eggs being bad memories, and that noelle treating her SPECIAL egg with kindness allowed for it to move on), and of course "don't forget" as you mentioned quite a lot :P the sort of two... routes? yeah, the two routes you propose (Dess or Gaster) might tie in with the trajectory of the weird route, where by peeling back the layers of deltarune's world, leaving destruction and sorrow in your wake in the name of searching for More, you find the ultimate easter egg (gaster himself). i can see the weird route ending similar to the genocide route, but perhaps more definitively? once you've exhausted all there is of deltarune, you can no longer go back to that world. in Dess' case, you and the main cast learn to accept the end of a world, you as the player taking your banishment from the game in stride, the memories you formed with your new friends propelling you forward. you (and the cast) will never forget the time you spent together, and that matters more than any dark world ever could on its own (play oneshot!!! its really good!!!!) ive also always found it interesting how _old_ of a concept noelle is. she dates back to at the very least the original FUN GANG drawing (2014/15?), and seeing as she's not one of the three heroes, it makes me wonder what her role was, and why it was important enough for her to have had an established character and personality. so yeah good video all things considered 👍 kris isnt the knight though (i am shot in the chest)

With the concept of goners and that forming memories and keeping them (both for Kris and the player) would be one of the key themes of the whole game I think you hit the nail on the head. It made me think of certain things that stick to me like when for example Seam mentions something like the next (secret I believe?) boss will be pretty much impossible, that what if the fact that we as player remember certain parts of the game will substantially enhance Kris' chances in some encounters, but there could be an extra, bigger layer to this, that we could get a perhaps at least slightly happier ending (sticking hard to Jaru's timeloop theory) just because we helped Kris with remembering some things...
@guiltyflygon10 ай бұрын
Hi! I made a video detailing a Deltarune theory a bit ago tackling the idea of dreams in Deltarune, and I think our concepts go together quite well. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts, so here's the sparknotes: To start, this theory purposes that Darkners are made from connotations, the additional meanings behind an object that aren't inherent to their function, but follow them nonetheless. For example, we know that Rouxls Kaard is a rules card in the light world and rules cards have the connotations of being overly wordy and useless in an actual card game, which seems to parallel Rouxls's way of speaking and overall joke-boss status. You can jump through these hoops for almost every Darkner pretty easily. Maus is a computer mouse that acts like a real mouse, Ruddin's are greedy because diamonds are associated with wealth (and also the power rangers for Rudinn Ranger), even Queen might take on her motherly traits because she's got a "motherboard". Though, there are specific cases where it definitely seems like there is something more going on. The NEO body for example has a ton of power despite being a simple drawing, or Seam's relationship with Jevil... However, connotations aren't just on a macro level. They're also on a personal level. If, say, the person who created the dark fountain in the unused classroom had been in that classroom before and thus had a relationship with some of those toys... Then things suddenly make sense. And that's where we start to border into your discussion of memories here. After all, what is a memory other than a personal association with something that isn't inherent to it's being? It's meaning your are imposing on an object. So if you were to create a Dark World with objects that you have deep memories with... you could essentially create anything. (That angel doll in the hospital that was made by Noelle and Dess starts to feel really important suddenly) My theory ends with a bit of a shot in the dark, but what else can you expect from a Deltarune theorist lol. Gaster was said to be "shattered across time and space". Do you know what else you could consider shattered across time and space? Your memory. Perhaps Gaster's goal is to create a dark world so vast that everything and everyone that has even a tiny memory of him is swallowed up in it, and thus, he can be completely reborn. That could even explain what Survey Program's function is. It's Gaster plucking all the individuals that have memories of him from wherever they're from, including us, and assembling them all in one little town where his influence can slowly but surely grow. Also, just as an additional concept to bolster your theory here in regards to Noelle and memories, Ralsei states that breaking bonds with darkners (aka fighting them) has the power to make you stronger. So, perhaps the weird route is all about breaking those connections for the purposes of freedom, while the normal route is all about building them into Gaster.

This video is so fantastic. This theory actually makes so much sense, I feel like it's been so long since I've seen someone posit a really unique and groundbreaking Deltarune theory that totally changes how I look at things!

This is just good! I've known Gaster wasn't actually wiped from people's memories for a long time but I never had a thing to easily point to for what the goner kid is actually going no about, and that's not even the point of this video. Fantastic work Mr. Dood.

There something more to add. Whatever happened to Dess has to do with the bunker, the bunker who uses a slowed version of entry 17 which is Gaster Entry. If she ended this way, it's because Gaster did it to her, a perfect lure for use a victim that he could use to bait people.

While this is little more then just me spouting off a goofy observation, I do want to mention this anyway for fun- I've seen people correlate goners with Gerson, since it's a anagram and such, but what's interesting is that the actual meaning of the name Gerson is "stranger or exile" which kinda matches the goner vibe, and it makes me wonder whether it's intentional, or just an interesting coincidence, since Gerson seemingly(?) has some sort of meta awareness of some kind, with him saying something along the lines of "I don't fear you because you can't do anything to me here." when you walk into his shop and try threatening him during a genocide run in undertale I don't think he has any sort of role in deltarune, other then just being a dead guy, so I doubt this observation will matter, but it's kinda interesting nonetheless
@eragons189410 ай бұрын
14:03 I don't know what kind of freaky coincidence is this, but at the exact moment you've said "crash", my game crashed out of nowhere, while listening to this video in the background. Also regarding the video itself, i like your take on Gaster being forgotten not because of some sudden memory wipe due to falling into the core, but instead due to the time itself making people forget with passing generations. As cool as this sounds though, it wouldn't really make sense, since in Undertale there are obviously still monsters who should be able to remember Gaster no matter how much time passed since he "died", like Dreemurs or Gerson who witnessed the entirety of Underground's history. I doubt they'd be able to randomly forget someone who's built a behemoth of a device powering the entire Underground being the Core.

I like to think goners could be undead zombies, that used to be fully alive, and when they are thought to be dead, and *forgotten*, a new soul takes a body similar to theirs, monster kid mightve actually came AFTER goner kid. And the reason why we are the only ones that can see them, is because our determination may match the determination they have.

There is in fact a spot where December is deliberatley spelled out. When Noelle and Kris are doing the switch puzzle, Noelle starts going on a nostlagia trip and talks about Dess and Azzy.. And each button she steps on is another letter of the word December.

I’m thinking maybe because Dess and Gaster’s bodies(dust) were never found, they couldn’t be buried properly with their respective objects like other monsters. I think that ritual might be more important than we think and could potentially tie directly to the memories of the monsters left alive. (Maybe idk)

Fun fact: In (I think the official Undertale art book), Toby talks about the term "Hyper-goner" as a reference to Kefka's "Goner" attack in the North American 94 release of Final Fantasy III (VI). The actual name of the attack would be more akin to "missing" but was mistranslated. It wouldn't surprise me if Toby was taking from some of the "creepy stuff" from Final Fantasy VI (He parodies the opera scene with Mettaton in Undertale at one point.). Granted, some of the creepy/supernatural stuff in the Final Fantasy VI has ties, I believe, to some of the supernatural stuff from Final Fantasy III (like Cloud of Darkness), Final Fantasy IV (Zemus'/Golbez's mind control), and Final Fantasy V (again, mind control/supernatural stuff from characters such as Exodus (Ex-Death)). I have found that Secret of Mana/Final Fantasy Adventure also has mind control themes, and in Secret of Mana's case in particular, we have a cult (to which I suspect the cult in FFVI is taken from) and a bunch of other supernatural stuff. My point is Toby Fox is likely taking the "Creepypasta"/unnatural elements from these games to form Undertale and Deltarune. We also have proof that Fox was influenced by Live A Live to a degree, which has a poignant yet dark story near the end of that particular game.

man, it's going to be weird if/when we find out the truth about Gaster. I think a lot of the intrigue of his character depends on the mystery shrouding him - the ability he gives to fans to theorize, to make alternate universes, to give him a story. I'm excited to one day learn about Gaster's whole deal, but I do hope he remains somewhat mysterious.

The memory of a loved one recounted by someone else is Dess. We never met her, but we know her sister, her father and her friends. My mother lost my grandpa when she was 11 and all I have is an idea of a person, fragments of recollections of my mother, uncles, grandmother and all those who knew him. I know him not because I met my grandfather, but because of the memories of those who stayed. We literally are in the same position with Kris. We never met him with full agency, only impressions of other characters and sometimes we get glimpses of him. Maybe finding Dess is actually what will help Kris regain his agency and accept our help instead of being “a heart in a chain” 😭 THIS IS NOT CRACK IM CRYING WRITING THIS

When you mentiond that no one uses dess's full name, my first thought was how undertale and deltarune just... restart if you try to name yourself gaster.
It's also might be connected (*wink*) to the meta-theme in the Undertale's Pacifist route. In the True End all you can have is your memory of all these characters you've helped. If you love them - you let them go. No more restarts. No more suffering for them means having only memories connecting you to them. What will we see in Deltarune then?

You know, after watching this video, I can't help but think about Final Fantasy IX. I don't really have anything meaningful about the theory. I just adore FF9 and like to talk about it whenever I can.That's a game all about coming to terms with our own mortality. And the conclusion it comes to is that memories are what give us the strength to face death and live our lives to the fullest. There are so many quotes one could pull from FF9. Garland's line about how memory is more than just what we recall but also a shared legacy that ties us all together, Garnets words to Zidane that pulls him out of his despair. Or Kuja as death's door realizing how he wasted his life. But I think "We Won't Let The Fear Of Death, Which Each Of Us Knows, Stop Us From Living Our Lives" is the perfect encapsulation of this video.

It's an interesting idea that Gaster's resurrection could happen because our own desire for it. The problem with this however is that it makes assumptions about the player that won't be true for everyone. As hardcore fans, it's easy for us to forget that most people who played Undertale and Deltarune don't view the games the same way we do. Imagine you're a casual fan of Undertale who simply played the game until they got the True Pacifist ending, was then satisfied and left it behind. You also later played through Chapters 1 & 2 of Deltarune, but only once and with none of the secret content. That was all you really needed, so you never joined the fandom, never looked up any information about specific details of the games and certainly never hacked them to find secrets and unused content on your own. If you're that kind of person, there's a good chance you've never even heard of Gaster before. And if you did, you probably only know that he's some sort of obscure secret. I imagine plenty of people who'll play the full version of Deltarune one day are like that. If the story were to assume at some point that the player wants to bring back Gaster, that would feel weird in light of the fact that many players won't even know who he is, let alone care about him. If something like this is indeed the plan, I imagine it'll only happen on something like the Weird Route. A lot of the game's secret content feels like it was specifically designed to appeal to hardcore fans who want to dig deeper into the game, so it would work a lot better there.
