McCoy: "Just because the word love isn't written in your book" Spock: *Lovingly stares at Kirk*
@zitacarno44436 жыл бұрын
"Love" is a word with many different meanings, many different aspects. There's love of family---love of the land---love of country---love of knowledge---love of sports, arts, exploration---so many different things. Bones was, no doubt, sidetracked by just one aspect of the term---and I believe Spock was aware of this. Love, above all, means caring for and helping another being in one way or another. And so Spock knew what he needed to do to help the disconsolate Captain Kirk, and he did it. That was love.

Third season episode of Star Trek, Requiem For Methuselah, which is an excrllent episode. And, it's very true, love is totally illogical and unneeded. At least that's the experiance within my life. I have expressed love to certain women who have done nothing but hurt me severly and have broken my heart. Love is totally illogical and unneeded and best not to love at all.

A quiet mind-meld...a powerful psychological save. Spock demonstrated just how much he cared for his commanding officer, erasing that tragic memory from Kirk's mind and implanting a hypnotelepathic block to give him a chance to recover his equilibrium. The quote from Shakespeare---"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" sums it all up.

@apersonontheinternet4249 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I cannot think of any other way to read that scene at the end of Reqiuem for Methuselah apart from in a shipping way. Immediately after Bones gives a speech about how love can drive you to take desperate chances and break rules (which Spock doesn't even argue with, which he generally only foregoes sniping back when bad shit happens, usually to Jim, and he's hurting over it) etc Spock goes over and breaks a dozen rules Vulcans have about not tampering with minds etc without permission, all to try and spare Jim the pain. And this is after he spends the episode watching seemingly jealously from afar as Jim falls in love with an android, tries to protect him from finding out that android IS an android, and basically demonstrating how much he cares about him.
@zitacarno44436 жыл бұрын
Spock wasn't breaking any rules. He knew what needed to be done to help Kirk recover his equilibrium,and he did it---a quiet mind-meld, a one-word suggestion, a temporary block to give his captain the time he needed. And it worked.

I have never watched Star Trek (I'm considering it now...) and I stumbled upon this video by chance. If anyone had said to me that these were gay characters and showed me this video, I would've believed them. There's nothing to call what happens from 2:50 to 3:20 besides homoerotic. I mean, seriously, Jim grabs Spock's neck and brings them really, really too close for comfort unless you have some serious physical intimacy going on (and from what I've gathered, touching isn't something Spock is supposed to be comfortable with because of his Vulcan side). Then he just clings desperately to Spock for a while before the man whispers his name in a low and husky voice, almost INTO HIS EAR due to their proximity. Jim looks up and they stare at each other's eyes for a few seconds without putting any distance between their bodies. And through all of this, their mouths are very close, they are incredibly deep into each other's personal space. And finally, as he pulls himself together thanks to Spock calling him back to reality, the hands Jim had on the other's neck gently slide down his shoulders and arms, almost like a caress. He steps back a little, but not too much, still well inside Spock's personal space and stares some more into his eyes. I mean, seriously, I write slash fanfiction on a regular basis and I don't think I could have done better in terms of building a scene full of meaningful signs of trust and intimacy, but also full of sexual tension. This much touching, this closeness, they way Spock's voice clearly affects Jim... You cannot dismiss this as simple friendship. No friends get so close to each other and are comfortable with it. I know that if my mouth EVER got that close to the mouth of one of my friends, It would be extremely awkward. Maybe Star Trek was the pioneer of queerbaiting?

If he would have gone any further, they would have blocked the series back then. And what about Th'y'la. I mean c'mon people. What is wrong with making a character bisexual. Insulting others for hoping to be represented, doesn't make you to better persons. Just having fun with it, burning others hopes since the 60s down, isn't it? THIS video is a PERFECT demonstration of WHY the Kirk-Spock exchange at the end of Wrath of Khan was so emotionally impactful and deeply resonated with the audience. The new Into Darkness version that flipped the positions of Kirk and Spock, while commendable...and managed to convey some emotional weight, it lacked the foundational dynamics that were at the heart of Kirk rushing down to see Spock, and being helpless to change the inevitable outcome. To understand the Kirk-Spock relationship, people need to see what Shatner and Nimoy went through together to truly feel the gravitas of what unfolded at the end of Wrath of Khan. IMO, Into Darkness lacked THAT!
