Just discovered this guy's reviews in the past year, so I have no real deep knowledge of his history, life, fans, or whatever tragic downturn his online 'career' has suffered. Really not all that interested in knowing about it to be honest. But it must mean something that this guy has people constantly re-posting his longer work and taking the time to edit skit-free editions and compilations, not to mention all the people making vids bitching about him and voicing their glee/hate about his fall from grace. Some of these FF reviews are almost 10 yrs old and they're still some of the most entertaining in-depth game commentaries to be found here on KZbin. Seriously, I've searched and there are very few people able to pull off this admittedly niche form of comedy, so give the man his due -- he made some damn good shit. Hope he one day regains his mojo and gets back to ripping games apart in his own hilarious way.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. His fans are bummed/pissed because this guy was bar none the funniest video game reviewer on youtube for a long time. At some point he basically had a mental breakdown and became openly hostile with his fans. Now he just does nearly-commentary-free let's plays. The amount of angst over Spoony is directly proportional to the height from which he fell in his fans' eyes.

I think they deleted my comment but I wrote on here on how to save the story of this game and it’s actually really simple. Have Titus be responsible for his father’s death and unleashing Sin upon this world. This games theme is about redemption or atoning for your sin so Titus being responsible would actually be very compelling. This also would make Seymour a much more interesting antagonist because he too killed his father but for more selfish reasons. With this simple change and the fact this came out around the time silent hill 2 was gaining traction this would’ve fit very well into both games overall themes. Also imagine if Titus finds out that yuna is gonna die by fighting Sin, she’ll be paying for your crimes and it’s up to you to take responsibility or not. There’s just so much potential in that simple change of the story it’s unfortunate no one ever talks about it.

@ for real imagine how impactful it would’ve been when Titus finally comes to terms with what he did and Auron being the only guy who gets it and maybe shares a drink with you. Then at a pivotal point in the game you either choose to confess what you did, or don’t but both have huge consequences especially in the end game. There’s just so much opportunity that this game could’ve had to be better but like you said they played it safe.

The simple change of him being responsible for all of this definitely would be better. Also I think it would be really cool for the intro instead of Titus just looking over the sunset telling the audience what’s going on, he instead finds an old recording studio a from his old world and pretty much becomes his confession to what he did. So it actually has more meaning later when Titus dies or passes on he leaves the tape with yuna so she can further understand the guy she ended up falling for.

Blitzball was dull as dishwater, much like this game is. This game has to be the most overrated game of the series. It’s only marginally more tolerable than 13 but everyone praises it as one of the best of the series. 12 destroys 10 in just about every category, even story. Seriously, just play 12 and you’ll see how laughable 10 really is. 10’s story is a complete mess and is presented in an underwhelming way and is littered with inconsistencies and plot holes. The fact it’s linear only exasperates the flawed writing and presentation it has. It’s only marginally better than 13’s because at least the characters explain things in the cutscenes, albeit in a stiff manner rather than the dreary datalog they make you read in 13 to have any decent understanding about what’s happening.

You do lose a lot of that nutty Spoony charm with the skits edited out. It also disrupts the pacing, Spoony is building up to the skit only to drop back into explaining something else, which is very jarring. The out-of-sync audio also gives this edit an amateurish feel. I doubt Spoony edited this himself.

Something struck me while watching his review of FF13 and his complaint about the alienation of the audience. This is exactly what makes FFX such a great story. He's absolutely right. This is NOT Tidus' story. It is Yuna's story, and it is Tidus' *journey*. Big difference. Tidus is essentially the player, in that he's discovering the story and playing through the game at the same time. And the reason why the story is so compelling is that Tidus, like the player, is an outsider, discovering Spira as we progress through the game. Sorry. Alcohol fueled rant while waiting for the Seahawks to kick off.

@@leblanc3536 I agree. It's both of their stories and that's how it was intended. It's the first final fantasy story where the male hero's female foil was an equal in the story. You'll notice that right before the yunalesca fight Yuna says that it's her story too, as a way to drive that point home. Ultimately it appears to be based off of the Gnostic tale of the romance between the Sun and the Moon. Although there appear to be many other themes. I think maybe they layered too much in the story, and those looking for just an escape get confused, frustrated or bored, but I think most people find at least one of the themes (consciously or unconsciously) and is touched in some way by it.

Girlfriends, ego and mental illness, from what I've heard. Basically one of his girlfriends that he really liked broke up with him (after years of making his forums an echo chamber and thus reducing actual criticism), which more or less broke him. From then on, it was a downward spiral. Because of his ego, he couldn't rebound, I guess, and he started to slowly but steadily take it out on other people including his audience. And since he had an echo chamber, any criticism only made him double down. Also, apparently he has bipolar disorder though now why it's suddenly impacting him now when it didn't before was never brought up. (And honestly felt like an excuse.) There was also some mention of his brother having to kill a person and that messed Noah up too. Along with his brother kicking him out. But it's pretty obvious that whatever was truly wrong with him had control of his life. The terminal TDS is just the cherry on top. He's gone from having a twitter acct for his dog to being pathetic, showing little incentive to improving and generally become a full fledged hobo druggie including hit-and-runs.

Square is so deeply ingrain in the practice of creating turn-based JRPGs that when they decide to add a sports minigame in their title, they do everything backwards. - as Spoony pointed out, they took a game built around the premise of 3-dimsnional movement and lock you to a 2D plain - Blitz comes from the German word for lightning. Blitz Ball takes place in a giant sphere of water. Arguably the farthest element from lighting you can get. - They took a sport which was showcased to be a fast-paced frenzied competition, and made it into a slow, clunky, meandering turn-based affair. The only thing that Square did right with Blitz Ball is not make it mandatory after the initial match. Hell, they even made it where you didn't even have to try to win that one match.

the one thing that constantly bugs me about him talking about it is the reward for winning. that +4 str sphere isn't the same as the spheres you find in battles, and goes quite a long way in making a huge chunk of the game easier. the way this game handles stat inflation is absurd, which is probably the only reason i come back to it from time to time.

Both 8 and 10 have really poor casts imo. Squall is alright and his monotone delivery is well offset by the other characters, but none of them receive proper development. Tidus is just...a complete dumbass, accompanied by another supporting roster that barely develops. They both feature incredibly unconvincing romance subplots and yeah... I don’t dislike these games but they do not hold a candle to 6, 7, 9 and 12.

This is one of those cases where the voice acting was just bad at the time, and I say that because while I could not stand the English dub, the Japanese version actually is _way, way_ better! I actually do not think that the characters in this game are underdeveloped. Tidus forms a bond with the party & comes to terms with his father. Yuna grows stronger and rewrites her destiny with her own will. Wakka learns to be accepting. Lulu comes to terms with the loss of Chappu. Kimhari prevails through adversity. And Auron earns redemption. I found the characters to be charming, and I liked them all, really. Each one had their own struggles, and while the designs are gaudy and absurd, it doesn't mean they're not going through shit & are a pantomime of what people should be. I laughed back in the day when I watched this review, but coming back to it just goes to show how much of a whiny bitch Spoony is. Because his world views do not match with FFX and he doesn't understand Japanese games and storytelling, he's consistently whining about how Square pissed on his teeth and didn't put him at the center of the universe when they were making this story. Fuck Noah, this game is good!

I’d take 8 over 10. 10 just pisses me off because of how laughably bad it is and how it treats the player like an idiot. 10 is about as terrible as 13. Same development team was behind these games and their sequels. Squall is nowhere near as aggravating as Tidus. Playing through 8, Squall gradually grows as a character and becomes more of a leader and becomes more open with those around him. Tidus remains an annoying jackass throughout the game and never actually grows as a character. Squall is not as good as Cloud, Zidane, Noctis and even Vaan but he’s no Tidus.

Morokiin No, see a Star Trek language has direct translations, word for word comparisons, and the terms are replacement for terms English speakers already know. A foreign language has idioms, grammar formats, and sentence structure that could vary widely from a language you know. Finding the translation stones turn one letter into another but don't change the meaning of the words at all. Look into Arabic or Russian if you want to see a language very different from your own.

Casanuda I speak a little German and am learning Japanese. I agree, linguistics are very interesting. Check out Langfocus, if you haven't already. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, though I'll admit I prefer studying a real language compared to a fantasy one. If only because I find the moment you understand and can be understood by a non-English speaker is immeasurably satifying. It still astounds me that we, as humans have constructed hundreds of systems of communication that at the pattern of a few grunts and syllables, you can convey entire abstract ideas, plans, or emotions. We owe our place in this world today to language and It's power to facilitate our intense social nature.

The blonde girl is karin from street fighter. The one in the skirt is chie from persona 4. Persona as a series is pretty downhill, mediocre, and disgustingly perverted in a pedo like way after 3 anyway, so you aren't missing anything if you don't know chie. This fight is also hella one sided and unfair as chie has a persona (just to simplify it, a persona is just a jojo stand), while karin's only feat as far as superpowers go is throwing a simple fireball.

the story is pretty bad, the game is incredibly linear, and the voice acting is particularly bad (lulu and auron are really the only exceptions). the gameplay is incredibly solid maintaining a fast pace while also being as slow as you need it to be. some of the minigames will filter a majority of the people who play it, mainly because most people are just bad at basic tasks.

In the case, of FFX, it's barely noticeable, because it has a fun leveling system that basically offers the player endless possibilities to build their characters. All jokes aside if you think tidus is ugly I assume it boils down to that you are a straight, not saying he’s anything special in terms of looks but in a fantasy world he supposed to be cute looking not handsome and tough looking or anything tech that’s reserved for a single handed hidden arm man. Kinda how anime women can be cute even tho no one on earth has giant eyes ect yet we still find that good looking, they are technically aliens compared to the people we have irl so same rules apply in the world of ff. If they want a ugly character they make them, don from ff7 for example is meant to not look good at all yet due to his wealth and connections he gets girls at his doorstep, another example is the fake queen from ff9 clearly they made her to be a ugly villain, so compare don and the queen next to tidus and it isn’t even a contest because obviously they are going to make all their main characters good looking and technically at the time doesn’t count outside cutscenes. Squall from ff8 in game is nothing special but looks good in cutscenes so yeah. Not saying tidus doesn’t whine ect but that was the point to put you in the role of a everyday person who has skills in sports as their life so tidus knows nothing about fighting till he gets used to it and in time he gets used to the world and it’s rules ect in spira, they could of just made him another hero of light or destiny boy, other then his connection to his old man he’s brand new in this world and knows nothing of it’s people or their rules same as us and that was the point we learn along with him. Yes you could speculate stuff before both you and tidus actually know but those speculations only count once you get confirmation from its characters that informs tidus and also you. Not saying people can’t have their opinions but I rather have a newbie character that learns with us then a main character who’s some fabled prophecy god who knows way more about the world then we do.

GlidingFalcon Last time I checked, which was five minutes ago, critical reception does not a good game make. Final Fantasy 13 had good critical reception for example. Nothing is universally good or bad, there are always going to be people that like and don’t like something for different reasons.
