I'm 70 and suffered an LCL sprain last year. The previous week (I think), I had a sharp pain in the outer side of my hamstring while doing sled pulls. I may have been taking too long a step or moving too quickly. The pain passed quickly but the following week, the LCL suddenly went. My GP had just retired so I went to Urgent Care. The X-Ray result: "No fracture or dislocation is identified. Minimal degenerative changes of the medial compartment. No significant joint effusion. The soft tissue is unremarkable." The nurse even said I was unusually free of arthritis for a man my age. I was prescribed physical therapy and continue to do rehab exercises since being released. Mostly, I have full use but occasionally, the knee gets a bit of slop and there is a bit of pain. I reset the knee by sitting on my haunches with my hand inserted at the back of the knee (this was not prescribed, just something I picked up over the years). Anyway, I weightlift 3 times a week. Am I pushing my luck, especially with squats and deadlifts? I have an excellent trainer who watches me like a hawk.

Not at all - if your knee tolerates the training well (no pain during or after) and you build it up in a sensible way, then it is usually absolutely fine.

Basically what I found through trial and error is, if you have no ACL left or a dysfunctional ACL (because it is not fully healed), then you are at a higher risk of "just" injuring the LCL again and again and again.... 3 times so far for me, full-ish recovery is about 2-3 weeks after each "injury event". This is all after a full ACL tear 2 years ago (which i "rehabed" without surgery). I am in my 40s.

Yesterday I had a very loud audible POP while at Jiu Jitsu early in the morning and I had some minor pain on the outside of the knee. I was able to go though the rest of the day without issue. By the end of the day it was starting to get sore. I iced it last night and plan to ice today a few times as well. Overall, I think it is pretty minor. My bigger question is what causes the POP? People on the other side of my gym heard the POP. Thank you for your time.

A pop usually means something have torn (but not always) - it could be your LCL or meniscus. See how it goes - if it doesn't calm down significantly in the next week, then getting it checked is likely a good idea.

What I've learnt from this video si that the results of MRI may be pretty unreliable. According to it I should have a grade 3, complete tear. But actually just 48 hours of moderate pain. I was on a static bike within 3 day. Pulling and pushing a sled within 7. Full range of motion in 10. No noticeable instability. Braced bjj in 20 (although this I know it is dumb).

I’ve had a right knee injury for over 5 years. It hasn’t bothered me much through the years. That’s why I didn’t do anything about it. But in the last 3 months it has been getting worse. There is a lot of inwards movement on my knee and the outside of my knee is very tender when I press on it. When I squat my knee usually pops out and goes back in when I stretch it out. I can’t sit down on the ground and cross my legs because my knee would pop out. I can run in a straight direction but find it impossible to change directions without my knee popping out. I’m quite sure my LCL is the problem here and possibly some other ligaments as well.

hello. very nice and educated video. Thank you Doctor. I have been through very serious ACL knee injury on right knee and I have surgery on that and have been playing football for 2 years. And recently I have another injury on the left knee while playing football. While put the left feet on the ground, the other player push me from the inside to outside and I heard a small crack (not big as the crack I have at the ACL injury, and my knee rotated like my ) and I feel that crack is not the crack of ACL torn (Grade 3). After that my outside knee is swollen and hurt, the inside knee seems not very much. After 3 weeks I am now able to walk upstair but still a little uncomfort to walk downstair. I still feel the knee stable unlike the ACL injury I had before for the right knee so I think the ACL still there, maybe stretched but not completely torn. My question is : - Do I had an LCL tear or MCL tear or both if I only swelling much from outside of the knee? - Should I rest and return to sport longer than usual to help my knee perform better and my knee health overall for long time after?

It might be that you also injured something else e.g. bruised the bone which can cause pain to continue for much longer. An LCL should be healed by now, so it might be a good idea to get a second opinion to understand why your pain has not yet settled.

@SportsInjuryPhysio11 сағат бұрын
It might actually be quicker to get a scan if you need it if you go to A&E. But if you don't fancy waiting there for so long, it is also fine to just see your GP or physiotherapist tomorrow - you may not even need a scan if it's a minor tear.

This happened to me 3 days ago while wrestling. It was painful with some swelling and bruising but I continued to run and 3 days later feel like nothing happened. Should I be concerned?

If it is feeling fine, then you likely just had a mild sprain - I would just avoid any hectic force on it for a few more weeks e.g. be careful with wrestling or very uneven terrain when running.

I just injured my LCL (Im guessing as i haven't had it confirmed by my doctor). I injured it during a failed attempt at a wheelie on my dirt bike. After it happened, i wasn't able to walk on it at all, and when I tried to get up, I felt my knee almost bend outward. I then went to the ER, and they gave me a knee immobilizer. It's been around a week and a half, and im able to walk on it with some weight on it with my knee immobilizer on. I'm not exactly sure which grade i might be, but I would love some feedback. This is my first serious injury thats taken me out of a sport like this. I've been stressing about this since I injured myself.

It has been 20 days and It only pains in the fibula region where the LCL screw was placed. Is it a serious conern? I hope its not a grade 3. However, I have noticed the pain still happens after driving or constant movement. Is it serious? Did my bowed legs contribute to the injury?
@SportsInjuryPhysio7 ай бұрын
It doesn't sound serious - it sounds like it is healing really well and likely just need a few more weeks before it regains its full strength. I can't really comment on whether the shape of your legs had anything to do with it because I don't have enough information - there are many factors that can contribute to it e.g. choice of shoes, how fit you were etc.

I did rehab within that time, exercises at home and gym, and nothins strainous, plus icing, and wore a brace (those designed for sports) if i had to walk distances, and took NSAIDs for the first 10 days (the maximum i could), the knee isn't swollen anymore and the only way this spot hurts is if I press it with my hand, I could just ignore it and try to practice since it doesn't bother me when I move and stretch my knee, but obviously I am afraid it could get worse so I dont know if its safe. Hello! Sorry to ask this in the comments, I just wanted to see if I could get your opinion on something. So I was playing volleyball and landed a bit funny and felt my left knee twinge, and now on the outside of the knee, I feel unstable. No pain when walking, and I played volleyball after this injury, although my jumping ability was reduced and the feeling of instability was more noticeable and there was some pain. I have since taken a break from volleyball, and i don't have pain when I walk, but the feeling of instability is still present. This injury occurred in mid April, it is now early June so about 6-7 weeks. Do you think if I just continue to avoid playing volleyball for a bit and then work on strengthening my knee, the instability will go away? I'm scared to go to a doctor because I'm terrified of surgery and I really hope I don't need anything invasive done. I also don't think I'd be able to do a lengthy recovery period given my need to be on my feet for work, but I also don't want to give up the sport I love. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

i can feel a constant pulse beat on the left side outer side of my knee .Could it be an LCL Sprain? its now almost a year since i got injured and having this feeling. And this pulse beat is on and off
@SportsInjuryPhysio5 ай бұрын
It can be any of the structures in that area: meniscus, lcl, nerve, ITB etc. A physio will be able to assess it and give you a diagnosis.

Ma'am im suffering from a very small leg length discrepancy( 2cm diffrence) so im using a heel to equilize my leg size. But some time when i use heavy weight to workout this pain comes in and i think it is an LCL inquiry. How can i prevent this. Is there any solution ma'am.please help
@SportsInjuryPhysio6 ай бұрын
You need to get someone to check your movement when you use the weights to see if you are doing a funny move with your legs or not - if your leg is turning out etc. then you may want to see if you can control it better. Also you need to check if your heel raise is causing your leg to turn out too much.

My son, 13 years old, injured his right knee while playing soccer. According to him, it was a ball hitting bis knee when his leg was outstretched. It didnt feel tooo bad at that time. So he continued to play. But by end of that day it was hurting very badly. But he could walk a bit. We didnt take him too seriously aince he injures himself almost wvery week. The next day he went to school. In the evening we got him a knee brace and he has been wearing that and going to school. After about 9 days, we saw he was still not improving. So we took him to a Dr, who took an MRI, amd also inspected him. No broken bone. But he has a tear in his meniscus, and the ACL which is strained, both of which the Dr said is ok. But the LCL is "nearly full thickness tear" according to the report. My son agreed that his knee sometimes felt like it was slipping. He now hobbles around comfortably with the knee brace and unfortunately tries to do everyrhing that he was previously doing, barring out and out sports. Pain level is 2 to 3 on 10, according to him. Surgery is ruled out till he is 16. The first Dr was not very hopeful he will heal on his own, hinting gently that he will likely have to wait till 16 to do a surgery and then play any sport. He did say lets hope for the best and see if its starting to heal after 6 weeks. But didn't suggest any course of action in the meanwhile. The 2nd Dr I took my son to, was more optimistic. He is having my son do cold compress thrice a day with a game ready machine. And start on Physio right away. Also some vitamins etc to help with healing. A 3rd Dr who took a look at the report remotely, said my son should be on crutches now and give his leg complete rest. And start physio only after a few weeks. Confused on whether to start physio right away as suggested by the 2nd Dr. Whom we are now considering as the main guy to go with. Please suggest course of action. Understand its hard to do that without reading the report or looking at the scan or inspecting him. But what are your thoughts. Happy to get on a video consult, if that can helpnyou make suggestions. We are based in India.

when i bend and straighten my leg, on the lcl side my knee or something there clicks everytime how i can fix this?
@SportsInjuryPhysio9 ай бұрын
It depends on what it is that is clicking - it can be your IT band, Kneecap, hamstring tendons, meniscus etc. Get it checked by a physio and once they have diagnosed it, they will be able to tell you what to do because the treatment is different depending on the cause.
