This video may have just saved my life. For 2 months I have had nerve pain on the bottom of my foot, The last month of that I've been bed bound, taking gabapentin and meloxicam prescribed by a podiatrist that basically just told me "Oh you have plantar fasciitis and nerve damage due to inflammation.. and we need to get the nerves to calm down before we do anything." So short-sighted. This video opened up every possible fact about what could have happened with me and allowed me to realize what did happened and is happening! THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO!! If I was in the UK you would be my doc hands down. With all your tests basically I was able to narrow down that in the beginning of my injury I likely had tunnel tarsal syndrome from a flat foot and when I became bed bound is when it got the worst but then as it started to get better by my being bed bound I started to do errands, made possible by sticking socks in my shoes underneath my arches so I was only walking on my arches.. HELLO! way to irritate the nerves guy.. So then that sent me back again. And now here's the real kicker.. I was using my mom's walker that has a seat, to scoot around on. It has a backrest that is just a bar so when sitting on that thing for hours a day I'm leaning my L4/L5 against that bar! Strike number three is my favorite mode of transportation I've been wearing my construction knee pads to shuffle around the house, tensing my butt like crazy and hamstrings. The thing that was so messed up is I thought I was doing all the right things yet I was just getting worse and worse. And the dog had nothing to say about it.. The meds made me so anxious I had chills and seriously was wondering about having to commit suicide if it got any freaking worse. Wow. I will say that after this video I got online and started researching like hell all the nerves all the possible dysfunctions in that brought so much light into my world of terrifying unknowns. Physiopedia was pretty amazing at laying more stuff out. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH PEOPLE!! DONT TAKE ONE OPINION OR EVEN TWO UNTIL YOU HAVE RESEARCHED AND UNDERSTAND AS THOROUGHLY AS POSSIBLY IMAGINABLE

Thank you so much for this thorough and clear explanation. I’m a long-distance hiker and started off thinking I had Plantar Fasciitis after completing a multi-week trek with poor-fitting shoes. Researching my symptoms I decided it sounded more like TTS but couldn’t understand why calf stretches seemed to make the numbness worse sometimes…your video has explained this. I now understand I have a combination of PF and TTS (due to over-pronation). I’ve invested in bespoke orthotics, a massage ball and new boots and I’ll now start a regime of gentle strengthening and stretching exercises, starting from the lower back and gluts downwards. I’m very grateful to you for making and sharing this video…it was my sunshine on a rainy day :-)

Hello! I was told by my regular dr that I had plantar fasciitis and after doing physical therapy without it getting better I was sent to the foot dr. I am so glad I found this video. I have had tarsal tunnel syndrome for 2-3 years. I have gotten custom orthotics that have not helped enough. I had to retire from hairdressing because the neuropathy in my feet got to be debilitating. I have been convinced that some of the symptoms come from my back because the numbness and unbearable pins and needles are much worse when I sit. My primary doctor is skeptical because I don’t have back pain per say. He did finally order an MRI but my insurance declined it because it wasn’t warranted by their criteria, apparently. The podiatrist gave me exercises but some made it worse, as you said could happen. Thank you for showing me that issues with the lower back can,in fact, be a factor.

Lots of PT, injections, etc. Just learned to live with it, but still able to hike and x-c ski moderate distances - 6+ miles. The ankle pain started up again, sharply while x-c skiing. But I also have very tight calf and hamstrings on that side, and the chronic low back pain. So now I know to go back for more treatment on the low back issues.

This was such a helpful video, thank you so much for putting this video out. I have had some sensations of heat in my lower right leg and now it hurts pretty badly in the arch and just above on the top portion of the foot above the arch. I had to stop running because of this and have had to turn to using a stationary bike to continue cardio in my daily exercise routine. Even walking through a store for too long can cause pain for hours after. I’ve had a plantar fasciitis diagnosis previously, so I knew this was not the same. My pain is significantly better after resting. The weird heat sensation I periodically get led me to believe this was nerve related. Thank you for this information about a syndrome I had no prior knowledge about. Now I know some questions to ask when I can finally get to the sports medicine doctor. The treatment has to be tailored to whatever caused your case, so there are not specific exercises that work for all cases and some cases may not even need any exercises or can feel worse if you exercise it. So, perhaps get it assessed properly by a physio who can then help you understand what is needed in your case. If you want help with your rehab and an exercise plan, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. It is sometimes useful to seek a second opinion. If your symptoms are over the inside of the foot then the peroneus tear won't really have anything to do with it because that tendon runs on the outer side of the ankle/foot.

(Like a bad bruise) I’ve been lazy about wearing correct shoes with orthotics lately and this came on after a long day on my feet without support. Even my low back hurts occasionally along with weird nerve shocks under my right buttock. My left hip is probably telling me it’s time for a hip replacement? Right one’s had a resurfacing already. Doctors scare me, seems like all they ever offer us is surgery…

Thank you so much for this video. I have been waiting for something that explains my nerve symptoms. About a year ago I was cooking some dinner for a girlfriend and I thought it would be fun to serve it in the bathtub together. While carrying the food to the bathroom I knew I had to step into the bathtub which was high step. So taking a big step was needed. After getting one foot in and holding my balance and my plate of food, my second leg hit the corner of the tub rather hard right on the shin. I didn't feel any pain put food went up in the air and landed all over my girlfriend in the bath. We both sat there and wondered what just happened. I got out of the tub and began to clean up. I began to feel a funny sensation on the bottom of my foot as if tape was stuck at the base of my toes. I didn't think much of it thinking it was probably something I stepped on. After cleaning up, the sensation was still there like something was stuck to the bottom of my foot. I went to bed that night thinking what did I hit on my leg to make this nerve feel this way..? Whenever I woke up the next day I walked around didn't feel that feeling but as I continue walking the weird sensation came back. I've reached out to friends asked their advice on if they had ever hit their shin in the manner I did. I've researched many things like nerve damage, tibial nerve damage. My girlfriend thought that I had plantar fasciitis, yet the symptoms didn't match. Any advice?
@SportsInjuryPhysio2 жыл бұрын
It does sound like a nerve that got hit. It may be useful to consult a podiatrist who can assess it for your and see what you have to do to help it calm down - perhaps your foot requires a bit of support for a while to help it recover but I can't tell without assessing you and podiatrists are best with feet.
@marksapp862 жыл бұрын
@@SportsInjuryPhysio thank you, I'm sure I hit something and it's been bothering me for quite some time. The bottom of my foot goes numb when standing or walking. It's mainly just on the ball of my foot and around the toes. I have to sit down after standing for a period of time. I don't want to take any medication. I do think it could be a pinched nerve. That's the only explanation. Again, it hit hard but my shin wasn't bruised and it wasn't in pain afterwards. I WAS very shocked that I wasn't in pain after hitting it. Yet, the result was that very irritating feeling of the bottom of my foot going numb.

I had shots in my heels.. epidurals in my back… physical therapy… nerve tests .. mri… wore inserts.. etc etc etc and my pain kept getting progressively worse it was terrible… it was 24 seven and it consumed my life… I finally went to mayo clinic they did all kinds of tests on me but it was when I met the orthopedic surgeon that I knew what I had… it was tarsal tunnel syndrome and my nerves were being crushed for over two years straight… I had to have surgery on both of my feet.. one at a time…the pain got worse before it got better but I still have nerve damage that causes pain and sensitivity from them being crushed for so long.. it was a horrible ordeal… but you are right about all the testing..it could’ve been several things…it seems hard to truly get a diagnosis or at least for me it was until I met the right orthopedic surgeon… he had me diagnosed within five minutes of talking to him describing my pain… my pain started in my heels and overtime it went all the way up the bottom of my foot around the top of my toes…up the top of my foot and then in the back of my knees.. thank God now Cymbalta keeps the nerve damage pain under control but what an ordeal it was!! :(

There aren't any I recommend as a one-size-fits-all - it depends on what your back needs. A physio can asses it for you and recommend what is needed and right for your case. Doing the wrong things can make it worse.

Love this video, all the science really well explained thank you! Can tarsal tunnel syndrome ever manifest similar to Achilles tendonitis? I’ve been having pain whenever I run or stretch the ankle/calf a lot, the pain is in the insertional Achilles but radiates under my heel sometimes. Then since I’ve ramped up my calf raises, I’ve started having this funny feeling in my little toes. Please help!
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
It sounds as if you may have irritated the sural nerve - it runs along the Achilles and to the outside of the foot. And doing stretches or calf raises can often irritate it further. This article explains it - I know it talks about tingling but sometimes it just causes pain and numbness - it is also possible that it can occur together with Achilles injuries: www.treatmyachilles.com/post/tingling-around-your-heel-and-achilles-tendon-causes-and-treatments

Hello wow ! Thank you. Do you suggest a cortisone injection for this. I was just diagnosed and I’m not sure what to do. The shot or physical therapy.
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
It really depends on what is causing your case - usually it is best to first address the cause e.g. get orthotics or whatever is deemed to be necessary - if that doesn't help, then consider the injection.

Thanks very much - I have just had a cortisone and nerve-splaying injection that was amazing but unfortunately not fixed the problem. The top of my foot is no longer numb and I can now move my toes. I am booked to have another injection 6 weeks post. My physio iwhos fabbo has now recommended that it may also be the Baxter nerve that is also trapped. I have heel pain as well when I am on my feel for a long time. ihave had plantar F so I know what that pain is like and I think it is different as I can walk in the morning. I broke my anke coming up 3 years ago in Feb and it has been no stop treatment and pain and two ops already. Now the surgeon is saying maybe the suregery for the entrapment, what is the recovery like for this? Thanks for you video it is a great help.

What about icing or KT tape? Will either of those help, especially after running?
@janettecalderon86643 жыл бұрын
If you are experiencing these symptoms like I have for the past 9 years, I don't find that anything has helped me get better. I have gone to physical therapy, done at home treatments like icing, heating, have had a cast on, now I am constantly having to wear a brace but I am always in pain. My doctors have not been taking my pain seriously and so I did my own research and now hopefully I can get surgery on my foot. Idk what else you have tried if you feel like anything has helped you let me know...
@nateeizzle15813 жыл бұрын
Tape definitely helps me. It supports and lifts my muscle so it feels it gives the nerve a break.

What are your thoughts on the blood plasma injections in the area with pain. Thank you for this info.
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
It can work for tendinopathy (if the tendons are the source of pain) but not really for tarsal tunnel. If your doctor is suggesting it ask them how it is meant to work - that should provide you with a better idea of what they will target.

After many searches, this exactly describes my problem which I have developed of late playing table tennis. I feel I have over stressed the tissue & need to reduce weight a bit to recover faster. Its a long period recovery I guess

I was bucked off a horse and landed on my back breaking two flipper bones, the ones on the side of our spine. Based on your information, this could contribute to pain around my ankle area an at times up my leg.

I have the nerve pain in the bottom of my right foot when I bend over. If feels like a really painful “pull”. It also hurts when I step down certain times and I did just try the test and it also tingles when I press on the “tarsal tunnel” on the side of my ankle. Also, the area on the bottom of my foot that feels painful is numb when I prick it. Since bending over triggers it, would that suggest the nerve is compressed in my back?
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily but it might. Bending over can also trigger it if the nerve is trapped in the area of the ankle and not able to slide as you bend over. Your doctor should be able to distinguish between the two as they should both be considered as possible causes and investigated to rule out or in.

Thanks for this great overview. I hope I can get some help with my tarsal tunnel syndrome. It’s quite obviously due snowboarding and the boots that really clamp down on my heel. I am hoping to get a cortisone shot really soon. If that fixes it then I plan on seeing a boot fitter. I just wonder if the shot works, if I have to get some kind of protective cover over that area. I have a positive Tinel’s sign, and the way I figured out what a Tinel’s test was is because there was an obvious abrasion there from the boots. I really hope I can keep that winter activity up.

Hi. I had total right knee replacement 3 years ago. I started feeling strong tension, shooting pain at the right leg tarsal tunnel area right after surgery. Since then I feel numbness, tingling, tension and shooting pain below and above the ankle, going to the big toe and to the inner side of the right shin. Three years of physical therapy did not help. Finally, I was diagnosed with Tarsal tunnel syndrome and scheduled for surgery in April 2023. I have L4, L5 mild narrowing and had steroid injection for law back pain this summer. Doc, who scheduled my surgery did not pay attention to my spine problem. After watching your presentation, I am not sure if this surgery will help. Any ideas what treatment would be best for me?
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
I can't really make any useful comments as I don't know your full history and not assessed you but if you're unsure then I think it may be useful to consult your spine doctor and ask them for their opinion as they will be best places to figure out if your nerve pain is coming from your back or your foot.

Hands down the best video I've seen on this topic on KZbin. Thank you for explaining in a manner that was easy to understand. I have been suffering for 10 months and have received conflicting diagnoses (one ortho dr said I have PF and not TTS, and an ortho PT said the opposite). I am seeing a podiatrist soon who I hope can help me with a correct diagnosis. It's possible I have a combination of both. Question: Do you advise against walking barefoot (esp. on hardwood floors) for either/both conditions? I've heard that said about PF but how about TTS? Thank you!
@SportsInjuryPhysio10 ай бұрын
Yes, avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces with TTS.
@vid919110 ай бұрын
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Could you please comment on exercises we should avoid with PF and TTS, esp. TTS? I now avoid high-impact, but my nerve issue gets worse when I do some low-impact workouts on KZbin. I can’t tell which exercise(s) are causing this because it gets worse after I’m done with the workout. I do know I feel the nerve when I kick my leg out straight in front of me for an ab move. But are there other moves we should not be doing like back lunges, squats or something else…? Thanks!

Thanks so much for valuable info do every podiatrist have that shock wave theory in their clinic? I can ask my podiatrist
@jenm32812 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. I have been seeing a podiatrist for six months. He does not listen at all. Appointments are less than three minutes long. I’ve had injections for plantar fasciitis which did no good. Did have an injection for tarsal tunnel syndrome and it helped for about a week. He does not answer questions or take the time to listen to anything I have to ask of him. My pain started in both feet at exactly the same time. Do you have any thoughts on whether or not the issue may be coming from somewhere else in my body since onset for both feet was the same time?
@SportsInjuryPhysio2 жыл бұрын
Foot pain can be referred from the lower back but it is also possible to get this in both feet at the same time if you do an activity that strains both.
