I have no skin in this game, but IMO play should be blown dead as soon as it's clear a player is badly injured. I know it's just an opinion. As the announcers point out it's an unusual situation but the goalie was CLEARLY rolling around in pain and unable to offer any defense for about 4 seconds before the goal. Edit: To those saying there was no danger - a knee injury is -potentially career-ending- (turns out more likely to be) 10-12 months of surgery/PT and can easily be made worse by contact. Also there is no way a ref can assess that immediately and they should err on keeping the players safe. Rules may say possession etc., but refs will blow a play dead because a player isn't getting up all the time, even when it's way behind the play. And they should have here. To those saying "Oh, so you want goalies to fake injury to stop scoring opportunities?" - it wasn't a scoring opportunity. The puck was behind the net, it was headed to the corner with no one within 10 feet of it, and it was several seconds before there was a shot that would have been stopped 99% of the time by an NHL goalie. There are penalties for diving. You folks need to stop acting like this clear injury/situation has any relation to a goalie faking because there's a shot being loaded or there are guys in the crease etc.

No no, you're absolutely right! If it looks serious, CALL THE PLAY DEAD.
@AddictedToPain-x1i4 күн бұрын
The problem comes in when that injury was caused by an avalanche player themselves pushing the Buffalo player into their own goalie. That shouldn't be blown dead as a whistle for the avalanche since it was caused by the avalanche.. So I know it's tough to see, but it's a difficult situation.. And I don't think you are taking into account the fact that it was the avalanche player's fault to begin with. Hardly seems fitting to rob Buffalo of a goal because of a stupid play by an avalanche player 🤷♂️
@edschramm67574 күн бұрын
fairly doctrinal, unfortunately. Ben Bishop had a similar instance in i think it was actually the 2020 playoff bubble where a shot hit him in the collarbone, and it caused him to drop and writhe, but the play was allowed to continue in that case for like 10 seconds if memory serves. when there is a severe injury, yea it's immediately blown down, but pain and life-threatening injury are not the same thing. when it's just pain, the refs let it go until the defending team gets control of the puck. which never happened here.

I am a Boston fan so I have no skin is this game. But for me the question is less if this is a good goal or not. In my personal opinion it’s simply a major example of bad sportsmanship to score on a goalie writhing in pain and then celebrate the goal like nothing happened. If Benson (by all accounts legitimately) scored and then immediately checked up on Wedgewood, this thing would be a whole different story and I wouldn’t give a hoot about the scoreboard. I sincerely hope that Wedgewood recovers quickly and is back in the crease as soon as possible. Oh, and for the record: If the Bruins scored like that, I would criticise their behaviour the same way I do here.

@ronpeacock99394 күн бұрын
@@calebm6818 I don't have the rulebook/casebook that NHL officials use... just noting what I've seen in the past. Except for the mask.. they treat any player on the defense the same way... how many times does the play go on when a player blocks a shot and goes down on the ice? If they block it with their face... play stops (and often players start trying to pick up teeth)... but nailed in the ankle that could be broken... play on until your team gets possession.... they don't really treat the netminder any different... a smart goalie will knock the net off when it happens if they can (though I'm not sure if Wedgewood had the ability the way he went down.). Also the thing that confuses is if benson went in on his own power, often they'll blow it because it's goaltender INT and he may get 2mins... again... many variables.
@edschramm67574 күн бұрын
unless someone falls on that knee again, it's not going to do anything through all that padding. this is far from the first time a goalie has been hurt during a play and it continued (i know that Ben Bishop had that happen a couple times, one of which was a shot hit him in the collarbone, where there is much lighter padding and play continued. if memory serves that was in the playoffs too), fairly doctrinal no-call. now, if the avalanche had gotten control of the puck, then absolutely, blow it dead, but in the 3/4 seconds this took place in, that didn't happen. and the contact itself i can't even really fault because kelly caused bensen to fall into Wedgewood. it was potentially a bit of a trip, or at minimum interference, and it was unfortunate that bensen was trying to turn hard in the process, and kelly caused him to blow a tire. i'm not in any way trying to say kelly should have gotten a penalty here, it was a position battle, but it seemed like bensen was trying to avoid it, and got shoved while turning, which lifted his back foot, causing the spin-out.

If the player’s team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position. In the case where it is obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the Referee and/or Linesman may stop the play immediately. When play has been stopped by the Referee or Linesman due to an injured player, or whenever an injured player is attended to on the ice by the Trainer or medical personnel, such player must be substituted for immediately. St. Louis Blues fan here so I'll try to be impartial with my question about how the rule is written - at the time of the injury, my opinion is that neither team is in control of the puck. In the USA hockey rule book, it states "unless the opposing team is in possession of the puck", but I couldn't find the official wording in the 24-25 nhl rule book. Is it written that Av's would have to control the puck or is it written that the lack of control by Buffalo should've stopped the play. On a another note: I would also argue that he could've sustained further injury from play continuing - it would've been more obvious if it was a 90mph slapshot but not thought of for a wraparound but in a black and white rule book, the type of shot shouldn't matter to stopping for an injury.

Look, other than hoping the goalie is okay, which I do, here's my personal take watching the play. Scoring player falls down, gets up and remains focused on the puck. He appears to not know that he hurt the goalie. He sees the puck come his way, makes sure he's not about to get checked into the boards, wraps around and scores, skating off in celebration. The entire sequence happened in approximately four seconds. He was not standing back watching and comprehending the events, just reacting as he has trained to perform. I don't think he was trying for a cheap shot or disrespecting the goalie. I think he was genuinely unaware of the injury. Again, about four seconds from start to finish.

As an ex referee for ice hockey, if I saw a goalie down in the crease and the puck is behind the net, it’s an immediate dead play. It’s not progressing towards a goal scoring drive once it’s behind the red line. A goal drive is forward progression from center ice towards the goal, a drive is dead once a player is behind the net. Same rule as a penalty shot. Should have been called dead, but im not an NHL ref and they play by different rules entirely.

The reason the Ref did not stop the play because Colorado Player #17 caused Buffalo Player #9 to into Wedgewood. #17 for Colorado caused #9 for Buffalo to fall over, which led to Wedgewood's injury. Since the helmet of the Goaltender did NOT come off during the play, it must continue until Colorado has control of the puck, since Colorado never got control play MUST continue which allowed Buffalo to score. Yes, many fans believe the play should have been stopped for Goalie injury even if the helmet did not fall off since the Goalie kinda can't save anything during the play. But the Colorado Player #17 was the main cause of the #9 fall if you go back to any game in NHL history when a player gets hurt from blocking a shot or a goalie gets hurt the refs will NOT stop playing until the Team with the injured player stops playing. All you need to do to understand what happened and why people were pissed off is go watch the post game presser with the avalanche coach. It does not matter that it was our own player that ultimately pushed the buffalo player into our goalie. It does not matter that the avalanche did not regain possession of the puck. Wedgewood was laying screaming in pain in the crease curled up in a ball and the referees did absolutely nothing. As soon as that puck went off to the corner and there was no imminent scoring chance that play should have been blown dead. They do it all the time. They literally did it earlier in this same game with Dhalin, and that was when he was in the neutral zone and there was basically zero percent chance that he could get hit by a shot. For all the people acting like a know it all and quoting the rule, by your logic if a player takes a hundred mile an hour slap shot to the face from his own player and is laying on the ice in pain, the refs shouldn't stop play because it was his own player that caused that situation. And yet every time that that happens the play is immediately blown dead.
@Marixa19793 күн бұрын
The problem is the same as it's always been. A player, or goalie, will get injured, big or small, and they'll stay down on the ice to get a whistle. It turns out the injury was minor, but they got their team the advantage of a whistle when they're being caved in and next shift, that player is back on the ice. That is why they changed it so the ref can call it, but otherwise their team needs to get possession first.
