The league behind them has the power to ban the player altogether if they find it necessary, and many lesser penalties before resorting to that. Instead he's going to exploit that protection to shove a guy who could almost certainly kill him with his bare fists right then and there if they were both forced to fight each other with no padding or helmets? If he wants to officiate like that he should do so without players needing to worry about an abuse of referee penalty.

Larry Playfair (arguing a call at 5:05), was the president of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association from around 2007 to 2012. It was around 2008 when he was the first to sign my daughter's Sabres cap, could not possibly have been sweeter to her, and even gave her a quick introduction to his own adult daughter. We spotted him after a game posing for a photo with a giant novelty check. Funny to see him here more the way I remember him....

I think most people that have never played would be shocked by the way players, coaches and officials speak to each other on occasion. When I was coaching I begged an official to toss me in an attempt to get my team fired up. He absolutely refused. I knew him off ice and I said everything I could think of to him to get kicked out and he just refused. After the game he came to me just to say “I won.” When I asked why he wouldn’t just toss me he said, “Remember that night you shook up my beer?” I said, “That was 2 years ago!” And he said, “And?” That’s was that, we were now even.

There is some truth to that, but not as much as we'd like. Most times, NHL refs really are trying to keep the game under control, moving, and as honest as possible. If there is a dirty, worst kept secret about reffing, it's swallowing that whistle once the playoffs start.

It's quite funny watching people argue with a ref. I don't even get why they do it, I've never seen a ref go back on a call, but I have seen quite a few additional penalties for players lipping off at the ref. All I do is sit back in my net, and watch players who hopefully aren't mine get an extra penalty or two lol

Lmao...y'know, the refs in any sport catch crap for enforcing the rules but hockey refs are in an absolute class of their own. Some of them skate nearly as fast as the players and skate up and down the ice all game long, break up fights, get hit by the puck occasionally. My hat is off to them. They have to referee a game with some of the toughest, most hostile and eccentric athletes in all of sports, all in real time.
