Nature's claim is SO underrated! any time im browsing the bargain bin at my LGS and I spot the printings from TSR or worldwake I always snatch them up for cheappp. Also thanks to NN for pointing out how Heliods intervention is 10x better than return to dust, that just won me a game recently.

Krosan Grip may be good against counterspells, but it truly shines against activated abilities. Someone holding the table hostage with Aetherflux Reservoir? Blow it up without fearing the 50 damage. You can break combos and stop other powerful abilities.

I think you guys under valued Despark. I would definitely put it at least top of C. In mid power levels almost all the threats you want to hit are 4 mana or above. It hits any permanent type so lots of flexibility and is one less than other super flexible spells. Definitely better than the other spells you have at C at least.

Since white got Archivist of Oghma and deep gnome Terramancer in baldurs gate, ive been so high on path to exile in white again. Having deep gnomes alone makes path ramp you as well, adding archivist to the mix gets you 1 life and a card as well. 5 mana risk total investment for 1 life, 1 card, and 1 plains ramped has made pathing my opponents creatures feel so good

Guys, I don’t watch a lot of MTG content anymore but you guys always make the cut. I feel bad for you that you had to mention not once, but twice, about people having opinions and that it’s okay to disagree… it is only a game after all and these videos are meant for entertainment purposes so the fact that people have obviously been rude to you on several occasions is disappointing to say the least. Krosan grip is just a mono-green card. In the archetype the extra 2 mana doesn’t matter too much, but being able to stop Bolas’ citadel through counter spells is beautiful. I get that it’s almost strictly worse than say nature’s claim but split second matters a lot more when you never have counter spells to back yourself up with.

I can't believe anguished unmaking is a B. For me this is the definition of S tier. It literally is an auto-include in any deck of those colors. It's just better then generous gift and beast within if you're in orzhov colors. I really disagree with penalizing cards for being multicolor

I think Terminate and Bedevil have their place in straight Rakdos, but nowhere else. There I like their versality over some monored or monoblack options. I will also play the best monoblack and monored spot removal in the same deck obviously, but they can be part of the suite too.

I've always liked Vindicate since its first print in Apoc. It was the first spell I ever saw that explicitly said, "destroy target permanent." I run the MH2 alt art version in my Liesa deck because it's on-theme, and because it's part of a "permanent" removal suite.

Crackling doom isn’t bad but I’d recommend trying Soul Shatter instead. Doesn’t do the shock but it’s easier to cast

Like sometimes crackling doom will just hit some dumb token that doesn't matter while soul shatter will snipe that seedborn muse.

thoughts on druid of purification? it's rec sage, but for 1 more mana, and can get rid of up 4 things on board potentially while also getting rid of your original intended target. of course if everyone chooses the same target to spite you, its a 4 mana rec sage.

On top of that...in my opinion most of the strongest cards it can remove without a sweat of a counterspell Ex. Smothering tithe, top, aetherflux res, doubling season, mind over matter.. the list goes on

What about tragic slip? 1 black instant for -1 -1 on a creature but if a creature died, -13 -13. Helps to get rid of indestructible creatures and only one mana if used nicely.

Lightning bolt only sees so much play because it's a spellslinger, storm and burn card I think. I don't ever really see this card outside of that. I think when you're already copying/storming/magecrafting/pinging, this card goes up in power tremendously.

IMO a good tech to help with chaos warp and wild magic surge is weathered runestone. Both reveal the cards from the library, meaning they’re still in the library, so they won’t enter and stay on the top. Be cautious that the runestone itself doesn’t nonbo with your game plan tho

Surprised Abrupt Decay isn't on the list. It's 2 mana and can't be countered. There are lots of amazing 3 mana or less cards on the battlefield to hit with it. Edit: it is B/G, but its a highly played color pair.

Vindicate depends on the group but mine plays cabal coffers, gaea's cradle and glacial chasm whenever possible so being able to hit problematic lands really makes the difference.

Hull Breach is something I consider undervalued. Maybe not for the creature-heavy decks (and in RGx, that's a lot of decks), but removing two things for two mana is a very good rate, even at sorcery speed.

Also, I think Krosan Grip's appeal might be cEDH-related - or at the very least, relevant in combo-heavy metas. When someone is about to combo off, Grip might be the only way to stop them.

My one big "WHAAAAT?" in this video was Despark. For me it's easily an A+ it has been so good/strong for me every single time I've had & played it. But then again, I don't play super high powerlevel in my friend group, and definitely nowhere near cEDH level. We are still somewhat casual despite some beginning to buy OG duals. (Also I never play Chaos Warp myself, I dislike the potential big risk of them getting a much bigger threat. Yes, I know its enchantment removal in red.. I use something like Liquimetal Torque for that instead.) Otherwise I suppose I mostly agree with the list - Would have thought Lightning bolt was a little bit higher doe.

Also hot take: chaos warp distinctly better than beast within/gen gift. It removes industructible and it has a good chance of getting nothing, a land, or a low cmc permananent. Also they cant recur whats not in their graveyard

The problem with bolt is the same as its best feature: it gets to go face. That is extremely good when you have to go 20 to 0 real quick, but when the life total goes to 25 or 30 (or whatever is in brawl now) its usefulness starts to fall, and commander has you face a total of 120 life to whittle down, and 1 mana to deal 1/30 of the total really doesn't cut it anymore!

Damnit I was so close Also, I think it's worth mentioning that if your meta has a lot of graveyard interaction (I run muldrotha, meren and Breya and my buddy runs Karador) all the exile spells get bumped up a whole letter grade IMO, because exiling vs destroying becomes a premium, since destroying just doesn't really do much anymore. Krosan grip is not great. Not even GOOD. but in some metas it is a NECESSARY evil. In particular if your meta has regular artifact based combos you want to disrupt. (isochron scepter shenanigans for example).

i honestly might put rapid hybridization/pongify at the top of A or bottom of S. not exiling is a downside, but there aren't many one mana creature removal spells in commander. way better than reality shift and comparable to swords imo.

I've found a pretty underrated yet decent single target removal spell: Vendetta. It's pretty much Snuff Out but you always pay a black for it. I play it in a 5 color deck where I can't reliably have a swamp on the battlefield and it works wonders. Best part is its only 25 cents so it's real cheap for all the budget players out there.

I remember you guys talking about Masked Vandal when Kaldheim was released and I am wondering how you guys thinks it holds up in comparison with Reclamation Sage? (Didn't see it in this video, of course, not a lot of people play it according to EDHREC so wouldn't make sense in a top 25 spot removal tier list). Being one mana cheaper and exiling instead of just destroying but with the clause of needing to exile a creature from your own yard is a really interesting tradeoff that I would love to hear your guys opinion on! Personally I haven't had the opportunity to playtest it as much as I would like but I am wondering if you have had any success with it? If any of you guys have actually gotten around to trying it out ofc :)

Personally I love it in tribal decks since it'll synergize with your game plan also (unlike Reclamation sage) and you'd have a lot of creatures anyway. I think the downside is that it's not "free value" when flickered. If you don't need its creature type I'd say Reclamation Sage is still better.

Chaos Warp should be S-tier, you can also warp your own land and replace it with something better. I’ve done it a few times and i replaced it with an Etali before and gave it haste and it completely changed the game after that 🤣 red as a color REALLY struggles against Enchantment removal and chaos warp & Wild magic surge are 2 compensate for its weakness in the color pie. Highly suggest this card because its adaptable to any situation

I’ll just say, when it comes to removal, play to your meta. Tier lists for removal are definitely more controversial because not every playgroup goes against the same threats/win cons. I’m pretty much set in my ways for what older removal, but I might try decimate. Baleful Mastery has really impressed me too.

Baleful Mastery is awesome. Instant speed exiling is great. Yeah, it's 4 mana for the whole cost or 2 and card for an opponent, but hey - you're removing the most scary thing for you, so why not. And rarely you can even student cost Tassa's Oracle and deck it in responce)) And underestimating Split Second - hey...you can go infinite with Basalt Monolit on a stack to any other removal, you can infinite mana, life and draw your library with Staff of Domination, Umbral Mantle will provide you infinite mana and enormous dork..in responce! But yeap - your meta is the perfect answer to the card you should play. Just some rules as exiling is better than destroying, lower mana is better than higher and versatility is also important.

Vanishing Verse should have been on this list. It hits so many problematic cards in commander. Seen it in a lot of cedh decks because I do like cedh and really its great in casual too. Just think of how many monocolor permanents are problematic. I'd put it at A tier.

Here's what I don't get, though: Why is black considered one of the best removal colors? Absolutely agree that Deadly Rollick and Snuff Out are great cards, but they're the only mono-black cards on this list other than Feed the Swarm (which is only on this list because it's NOT a typical black card). I guess black is the only color that gets straight up "destroy target creature" cards w/ no caveats, but most of them aren't particularly good in EDH anyway (the best of them is what, Go for the Throat? Infernal Grasp?). And black really can't answer anything besides creatures. White is def the best at removal, but honestly I'd put green at #2 since it's got great artifact/enchantment removal and a few good creature answers. I might even put blue over black, since it has a decent number of efficient creature answers plus a little bit of artifact removal these days. I just don't see the appeal of mono black removal beyond Deadly Rollick and Snuff Out.

Green definitely not over black. Black has been the best because creatures are the most prevalent card type and black answers that in many ways even with creatures through sacrifice. Green can't answer creatures and white had the ability to remove artifacts and enchantments (disenchant for example) long before green copied it (naturalize) years later. It should be Black or White, then green followed by blue then red.

I think Lethal Scheme is the 2nd best removal spell in the format, only behind deadly rollick. If your deck is fairly creature dense, I think lethal scheme will outperform deadly rollick, and almost no card can do that.

The argument always to that is that you need a fairly specific situation where it can be the best. Scheme would need x creatures (so you need to have a high creature count deck/token deck to begin with) to be effective which is a significantly more difficult prerequisite compared to Rollick which is just a commander or Swords which is just one white mana. And in most cases you would have Rollick or Swords more ready than Scheme. You said it yourself "if your deck is fairly creature dense" which is already a requirement which Rollick and Swords don't need.

I think grip is worse in your meta cause it is combat focused but having split second to guarantee destroy a combo piece is really relevant in slower casual metas that have combos. I think in mid power where combos are on the table it is the best removal for enchantments and artifacts. Unless I'm mistaken their meta isn't super combat focused, and they tend to be pretty harsh on any combat cards unless it's likely to outright kill someone. As for Krosan Grip, it's only good in the awkward middle ground of "casual enough that mana cost barely matters" and "competitive enough that split second is likely to be relevant".

@@flangwang They said specifically that they "powered down" their decks some time in the last year, which means they were previously at a significantly powered up level. Just because they aren't using the optimal cards doesn't mean they are unaware of their effectiveness. They mentioned removing Vampiric/Demonic tutors as well, but clearly understand their absurdity regardless.

We used to play a lot more combos that required responses from opponents and didn’t like Krosan Grip there, and we’ve since powered down our decks a little and still haven’t wanted it

Fun topic. I built Kros, Defense Contractor partially around all the spot removals that replace your good stuff with creatures (Beast Within, Angelic Benediction, Pongify, etc). Remove threats, then goad the leftovers

It's interesting to hear them talk about planeswalkers as if it's a type that loses someone the game if they play it in commander. I mean, I get that in commander all three opponents can attack the planeswalker which makes it much more difficult to keep on field, but there are 100% decks and planeswalkers that you will by crying if you see come on board without some removal, even in commander. That opinion sounds much more like a "my play group" thing than anything objective. Very much a sheltered opinion.

Kind of curious how you were including bad spells but didnt include 3 mana destroy nonland permanents like Void Rend or Mythos of Nethroi (that I would be happy to play these spells over any of your C and D listed choices). Vanishing Verse didnt make this list? This feels situational but fine if you have good multicolour removal. In that yes Verse shouldn’t be 1/4 pieces of spot removal, because how narrow it is but it will have targets, more than your C tier’s target. March of Otherwoldly Light feels playable. With the number of problematic artifacts and enchantments, you have agency to respond at instant speed and prolonging ‘I’m about to lose’ to even giving you a chance to win. This card is narrow what decks want to hold up this kind of mana but they would happily play this in more decks than your C or D rank. What you classified as B teir, the power level of MoOL feels similar while being monowhite (than 2 or 3 colours). (The actual D tier rank version of the white March is Radiant Purge) How would you rate Crosis' Charm? It can timewalk an opponent, is doomblade (since you value doomblade so much) and shatters problematic artifacts. I feel the utility of this charm warrants the 3 mana for how narrow grixis can answer enchantments. The goal is to disrupt their combo until the table finds an answer. In a similar vein, Valorous Stance/Destroy Evil having modes make these spells feel more playable than your C/D tiers. Yes indestructible isnt an amazing keyword, however I'll find targets to Stance (not in CEDH though) Wrong to not include Rite of Oblivion? Yes a narrow spell but a powerful when its good. You get the sacrifice trigger 2 times and though at sorcery speed, you are able to properly banish 2 permanents for 2+4 mana. Again not a CEDH card but powerful. (I don’t mind not being able to flash this back, cause if half the games the games my opponent lets me flash it back, I’m happy to play a somewhat better Despark) /2cents Thanks for making this list!

Where are the actual best removals? - nature's claim - force of vigor - abrupt decay - vanishing verse - chain of vapor - and following your rec sage point of vue : skyclave apparition? Although i can understand some of your like/dislike abouts some cards, assassin's trophy should be the top of S tier, 2 mana to destroy ANY permanent (land included) in instant, no real downside, if what you remove is not worth a basic land then maybe you're not using it right? Same goes for path to exile, wich is now supported by archivist of oghma and deep gnome terramancer, and can "sometimes" be used to exile your own token/creature to ramp/fix your mana

Broooo lightning bolt is unplayable in edh. Who plays lightning bolt? Your better off playing a synergy piece than bolt. Mono Red is bad at creature removal just accept it and move on. Don’t play garbage red target removal spells. Mono Red decks win by player removal. If utter end is poop tier than bolt has to be a bucket of vomit, diarrhea, and piss in edh specially.
