I just want to double check what you said about the chronograph movement...the second hand was moving on both watches but the Seamaster's 60 second subdial was also functioning while the PO's 60 second subdial was not. In this instance the fake was easy to identify. That said, there are higher end replicas widely available that it would be near impossible to identify without a close, side by side inspection and a detailed examination of the movements. If you have, or are planning to buy a luxury watch from a source such as e-Bay, caveat emptor. Replicas are regularly changing hands there as alleged genuine watches.

Let me make some points and see if you agree. - The orange fake had a printed bezel. The real watch had a 3d bezel. That must cost more to produce. - The band had more detail, although more detail doesn't necessarily mean real. Was the fake a quartz. I was trying to see whether the second hand was ticking, but couldn't tell.

That is a low end replica. High end, you wont tell. The bezel pip and weight are spot on on the high end reps.

Looking at someones wrist you might not be able to see the movement well enough, but when you had them side to side I could tell the one on the right had a much lower beats per hour movement, and I know that high-end fakes can have the 28,800 beats per minute. Of course, this does not work with vintage watches. Most modern swiss movement are.

So I’m gathering from this video that you can’t tell the difference just by looking at it. You have to handle it or weigh or take it apart. I’ve had other videos where they talk about fake watches and describe things like errors on the logo, the crown, and, of course, the case. I’d like to see you do a similar video with some more obvious differences probably having to compare the same two watches. Thanks!

I can't comment on fake Omega since I never owned one, but Rolex yes. There is a huge difference between a fake and authentic Rolex. Yes even by touching the steel you can tell (if you own or been around Rolex). Rolex uses 901L steel everyone else uses 300ish L grade steel. The movements even on some good replicas feel cheap. Just by shaking the watch you can feel or hear the movement. On a real Rolex you can't. Up close on some replicas, the dials are spot on. For some of the $1000 plus dollar replicas, you need to open the case back since even the feel and polishing is spot on. With precious metals you can tell up close. If you're into Cartier. Things get even worse because Cartier's inconsistent manufacturing process. They have used Paiget, JLC, ETA, solid gold cases, electroplated cases, and various Quartz movements throughout the years. So buyer be very aware pre-owned. Especially vintage Cartier from the 70's and 80's. It makes me think if these Chinese clones/fake/replicas are so good why even bother to put so much money and resources into faking a watch that will sell for $100?

I've never own a replica watch so far but I'm reading a lot of Rolex replica developments lately. It's quite impressive. They're using 904L metal for the latest high end models. Cartier is worse indeed. . I've bought a Cartier roadster chronograph in 2006 summer at WEMPE. Because it's my first luxury watch and my lack of knowledge and experience I was blindly in love with the watch for eternally. After I got to know more about Cartier watches and movements... they're quite a mess. In my opinion I'd be more consistent with contractors in the technical developments. I strongly believe it's one of the issues that divides Cartier from the top players in the basel world. But again my precious baby Roadster love x eternally. . .

Watch on a moving person? Big errors can be seen. A watch in colors or options that were never made. Suspect - $10K to $100K watch on a person that is beyond their means. Two tone Silver/Gold. The Gold color will be off and might be wearing off quickly. Up close. Sharp edges and loose parts. Poor lettering. Cloudy Crystal. Open a watch... Fingerprints inside, machine brush swirls on parts, dust inside the watch, rusty lettering on inside parts, dull colors of parts inside. Action - A "ghost" date position on the crown pullout and there is no date on the face of the watch.
