As an American living in CH for years, my wife took my Rolex sub (that I have owned for 24 years) to the local Rolex certified shop (Bucherer) for a service. The lady at the shop told my wife that they would not service the watch because it was a fake. She had the original purchase papers and the lady still insisted it was fake. The store manager was called in to examine the watch and verify that it is genuine and that they would be happy to ship it to Rolex for the full service. The service cost me $1100. Lesson learned. These fakes are looking pretty good considering the "official" treatment one receives when owning a real one. It was really an embarrassing experience for my wife...the store was not empty and the lady at Bucherer made her feel unwelcome with that statement. Fu^% those pompous pricks.

You and I will agree IP rights are to be respected. We can have an appreciation for the ability to replicate all we want, but stealing IP, R&D, and all the time, money, and labor that went into designing and creating something that captivates so many is clearly wrong. That said, I feel that very reality reinforces those prices. At $5,200 for this watch in particular, you are not only paying for a mass produced, albeit quality watch. You are also covering the costs of R&D and, quite honestly, the entire legacy that led to that watch. Without Omega, in this case, that $500 very accurate copy, would not exist. The connection it has to James Bond would not exist. It would cost $500 because no one would pay more for it (feature for feature). Ignoring for the moment that in a capitalist society, there should always be room for products at every price point, the simple reality is, that when you buy something that is extremely coveted... enough to warrant such a close copy to be made... you are are not only paying for a fine quality piece, but also paying for the very arduous road that made that piece even possible.

In 2021, Rolex produced (estimated) 1.05m watches and generated revenues of $8.8 BILLION USD which is $8400 per time piece. So even genuine Swiss watches are NOT about rarity but more what the "market can bear". When shops say they are out-of-stock it's just a way to get your contact details to sell you one WHEN (not if) the watch arrives. Most likely I'll purchase a Tudor this year but the one I want is not made anymore... but to think an AP royal Oak is $50,000 I think I may as well get a Pagani Design "royal oak" for 1% of the cost & give away the 99% to charity or buy a nice Seiko or SeaGull.

@dmitryyankovsky64174 жыл бұрын
@Marcquise White I agree that the same could be offered for less, but there is a lot that goes into delivering what Omega promises. A decorated in-house movement with a silicon hairspring that reaches an accuracy of 0/+5 sec is worth something. I agree, that the name Omega adds value as well, but in the video they discussed a replica at 1/10th the price. An unbranded watch that could actually preform as well as the authentic Omega would still fetch substantially more than the knock-off.

The reality is most watch lovers will never be able to justify $4000 for a watch and certainly not $10-15,000 for many watches like Rolex. These replica consumers are not a loss for Rolex or Omega since they were not in line to be a customer anyways. If the individuals fortune changes due to luck, hard work or a little of both, well then that fandom that made them buy the replica Rolex or Omega will probably lead them to buying the real thing given the chance. The reality is most non-enthusiasts don't know the luxury brands by sight anyways with maybe the exception of the Rolex and can't determine a $100 watch from a $100,000 watch.
@salty-as-heck99154 жыл бұрын
If you can't afford a $5000 Swiss watch, them buy a $4000 or $3000, or even $2000 Swiss watch. There are fantastic Swiss brands in the entry level Swiss market. Brands such as Longines, Oris, Rado, etc, etc. No need to buy a fake Rolex or Omega. Heck, if even that's too much for you, buy a $500 Swiss watch from a brand such as Tissot or Hamilton. Won't be a Rolex, but at least these are old established brands that produce quality Swiss pieces at the lower end of the market, and they are not fakes. There's literally zero excuse to buy a fake watch
@petercraggs24314 жыл бұрын
@@salty-as-heck9915 There is an excuse though, isn't there. Your argument is based on someone just wanting a Swiss watch, not a particular one. @@petercraggs2431 except the replica will never be the same as the real watch. The materials of the dial, watch hands, etc., won't be the same and won't be finished with the same fit and finish and attention to detail...and I can say that from experience having owned everything from $200 Chinese Sea-gull watches, to all sorts of Seikos, Citizens, Orients, Tissot, Hamilton, Longines, Omega, Breitling, etc. Not to mention the replica watches will have zero resale value, whether I can resell my old Omega Seamaster auto from the late 1990s for $1000 over what I bought it for 11 years ago, and even the Longines Hydroconquest I'm wearing at the moment that I bought for $1000 with box and papers from a gray dealer a year ago I could flip right now for $800, and in 10 years I could probably sell it for $1,200 or so of I no longer like it. Try doing that with a replica, you can't. And a good watch is worth servicing and keeping with you for many decades, while replica watches are throw-away watches that you get rid of 5-6 years down the line when they stop working as no one will service them.

Yep. Let's face facts. The average guy buying one of these watches isn't going to be deep-sea diving with it, nor have a need for an ultra-precise chronometer. He wants something with a good brand name that looks quality and impressive on his wrist. If a fake can be 98% convincing, that's more than enough to rationalize spending $400 instead of $4,000. Of course if money is no object than the real one is a no-brainer. And there is of course much to be said about knowing that you own something with that kind of history and engineering behind it. But many people, when faced with the actual choice of spending their own money, will not be able to justify that kind of money when something this good is available as an alternative. Lower quality fakes are easy to walk away from. But good ones... not so much.

I'm not a watch enthusiast, and I'm poor, but I fell in love with the beautiful orange Planet Ocean many years ago. So, many years ago, I bought an "ultimate replica" from a reputable seller online (it costed $300 USD). I loved it, and had no problems telling everyone that it's a replica. All my friends and family know I'm poor anyways. However, it really seems the narrator is finding difficulty in exposing fakes. So, let me help him outline the real issues: (1) Every fake Omega has a very tiny serial number printed on the back that is unique to fakes. You simply look at it and then you'll know. (2) The ticking of the movement is actually audible in a silent room. I have caught myself numerous times, while driving, or in my room, being annoyed by the subtle ticking that you will hear (it's not loud enough to be audible to anyone else). (3) After about 6 months of ownership, it began to gain time (even though it was a highly revered ETA 2824-2 movement). (4) Because of how often it would gain time, I always found myself unscrewing/re-screwing the crown to adjust the time. Well, it so happened that one day the crown no longer screwed in because the screw thread eventually stripped away from wear. (5) I let the watch sit in my drawer collecting dust because I didn't want to wear a watch with a popped out crown, and thought I would wait until I had time to overhaul/clean the watch to correct the timing and fix the crown. Another $300 USD later, it was overhauled and repaired. (6) I started happily wearing it, again, but not long thereafter, I accidentally dropped it and five of the hour markers in the dial fell off inside the watch! So, I then learned the adhesive the replicas use are clearly cheap. Replicas are great at first sight; but they do not hold up to the stress test of day-to-day living. If these new ones hold up though, boy I'm tempted to buy another one haha!

In fact, I recall sometimes even hearing it beating away on a quiet night if it’s on my bedroom night stand right beside me before I’m going to sleep. It wasn’t annoying. Aside from the intrinsic characteristics like bragging rights, legacy, history of Omega, it's astonishing how far the replicators have come and how much they can deliver for the money. @dxdxdxdxdxd71252 жыл бұрын
they cost one tenth because someone ain't getting paid(workers of the sweatshops), they won't deliever the same quality no matter the money because they just can't and if they could, they would've done that long ago and it would cost a lot, and finally they would absolutely not design a new movement or a new watch, they can only copy. You can choose to wear a mastercrafted original timepiece, or you can choose to wear a subpar, albeit flashy watch that you can't service in an official dealer or service center and which was made by an underpaid worker, i'm not giving a damn, just saying

@@dxdxdxdxdxd7125 Dont be silly, if they can make it to such a standard, they definitely fully understand how watches at these level are made, and designing a new movement is not hard, its just not worth it if you couldn't sell it for a shit ton of money. Making a high quality replica of a famous brand allow the investor to turn manufacturing capacity into profit with a very predictable income stream and low overhead, they only need to make a convincing copy of the real thing at a price point that is affordable to a lot of people, and they know customer will come. There are Chinese watch brands that are trying to make something out of themselves and design and make original watches, but its very hard work, and it mostly fall on marketing and brand building. In China, their strongest skillset are in science and engineering, to take something, reverse engineering it and then create a great copy of it is just easy for them. I would argue that all those famous brand are POS at their price point, as clearly if a replica at 15-20 times cheaper can get so close to it. Also don't be naive, if watch making is difficult, do you think that it would be cheap to get skilled labour thats pretty much on par with Omega in this case? As for servicing, why do you need an official dealer to service it? A watch is no different than any device, it can be serviced by someone who knows what they are doing. All my Porsche and BMWs have never serviced at the dealer because I have a trusted shop that deals with BMW and Porsche at a more reasonable price point. You sound like a snob. I have many fake high end watches and I have enjoyed them, I really just like their look and nothing else, as I see them as inferior time keeping POS, my $200 Bulova (this one is real lol) precisionist has a margin of error of 8sec PER YEAR, so any mechanical watches can go fxxk off pretending to be a watch that keeps good time in the 21st century. For all the fake high end watches I bought and enjoyed, I invested the difference into the stock and crypto over the years and I have made 7 figures gain. I can't thank my cheap stake ass enough for that lol.

And that is why the watchmakers have a problem with servicing it - they often don't know where the hell parts are coming from, because its not a familiar movement of the watch fake one is trying to copy, also Porshe and BMW shop needs to be certified, otherwise you are losing your manufacturer warranty, and from your words i suspect you have 10+ years young cars, so you don't have it anyway, and you can't compare a car service to a watch service as latter requires much less of it and of a different kind Bulova Precisionist is a very cool watch tho

I can’t help hoping that you would commend them to be true to themselves, think honestly about who they want to be and - in this instance - beware cutting off their noses to spite their faces later in life. Both these watches are extraordinary in their own way. Both look wonderful for the vain. Both tell the time. Both show artistic taste for those who value that. They have their unique differences and those should be valued by those who champion each. And remember, both can very easily be criticised as representative of all that’s wrong in the world and should be improved. But I return to that aphorism about noses….

My 23 year old Rolex Air King is genuine yet not one person has ever said to me anything about it other than "is it a fake?". I guess I should have gotten a fake, saving a sack full of money and just say 'no, it's a real Rolex'. I'm watching this vid as I'm close to pulling the trigger on one one of these Omega fakes. You could say that I've learned my lesson. Update 3 years later: I never got that Omega fake. Instead, I discovered Orient Kamasu automatics. Absolutely terrific watches and going for around $300. I have two and plan on adding a third. One runs about 7 secs/day slow and the other lost 2 secs in four days. My Rolex is spec'd at 2 secs/day. The Kamasu models use the Orient F6922 movement. Highly recommended.

@@leafboy3967 I used to believe that, yes, there's engineering, actually, its more the detailing. I remember I saw a comment in a watch video that in the 60s Switzerland cancelled a couple of their annual watch events when Grand Seiko started winning them, so clearly, Japan had caught up in the 60s but Swiss need to maintain the perceived image. The trouble with that argument is that things like Rolex and Omega and other expensive brands are worn by ordinary people so the perception of luxury goes out the window for me. When you see a flunky in a car dealership or council office wearing one how is that special or exclusive?

@@ianmedium you NEVER see omegas or rolexes out in public. Car dealership flunky? Do you know how much salesmen or service advisors make in a high end dealership? 6 figures they can easily afford a gen rolex or omega and as I said the only time you'll see them are parties ect. Go to walmart and tell me you'll find one hell I have a genuine rolex and I dont take it out normal days I will on dates though or whatever.

@ I've seen Rolexes and Omegas too worn in public by ordinary people. What you talking about? You can buy them online.

I have a real Fossil that set me back almost ONE hundred dollars. I'm glad I didn't buy the fake. It feels good knowing I have the real thing.

If you need to buy a fake $100 watch, then you are pathetic. We are talking about $10000 ones faked here.

@@wisetank135 A. You are not adept at picking up sarcasm. B. You are a mean person. There are people in this world who CAN'T afford food , let alone a $100 watch, and for you to call them pathetic makes you ignorant.

@@greggkrueger I've owned about a dozen watches that costed thousands of dollars . I never brought it up to anyone who didnt notice it and ask. I've known people who made 3 times the income I made and thought I was a fool for buying an expensive watch . It all comes down to where you put value . Now the clown that said you were pathetic needs a dose of reality . Hes the type that buys stuff to impress someone else . These types are typically lacking in personality, ethics and originality. I'm the type to slap the shit out of that guy . Enjoy your fossil and keep your sarcasm . So many fail to understand it .
