Could you have hired a weather advisor to keep you in the wind ? How did your friends do so well ?
@MJSailing
@MJSailing 6 жыл бұрын
Matt will be discussing that in a bonus episode soon, but they used the Predict Wind service, which will survey multiple different forecast and suggest the best route for you to go. We were solely reliant on what we downloaded from our Iridium Go.

We actually wished we had spent more time at sea, we were only worried about the limited time we'd have to spend in the Azores. But down the road on future passages...possibly.

S R I believe they carried extra water bottles. I think I would have waited and fixed the water maker. But they did make the passage with s few gallons left over.

Still being landlocked, people spend a lotta money to get to sea finally. As soon as they are, there should be spent more money to help getting as fast as possible to land again ...? Funny concept, ain't it?

Jessica, you took alot of grief when you put the green canvas on the boat, but I think it is beautiful. The contrast of the green and the blue water is stunning in the video and it is certainly unique. Good choice.

I noticed the head of your drifter was quite a way from the top of your forestay. I also noticed that the tack was chafing on your bow pulpit. If you were to put about 24 inches of wire on your tack, the drifter would be up where it could catch more wind plus the foot would be less crumpled out of shape from bending over the pulpit.

Seared tuna!! Season with salt and pepper and heat a pan with oil to high heat. Cook about a minute a side or so depending on how rare you want the middle. And depending on the thickness of the fillets/steaks. Once done, slice them against the grain with a very sharp knife. Good to go. Easy peasy.

This was the second time doing this trip. How did it compare with the first? How do the different boats compare? Which was more "sea kindly" and how do things compare with the aluminum hull vs the fiberglass hull? I'm looking forward to the weather routing episode.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 6 жыл бұрын
Too hard to say. Our first time was further North and filled with storms ( 4 or 5 boats were lost that year crossing), this time we didn't have wind. The new boat is much more comfortable sailing, but you pay the price of not pointing as well and it's harder to get going in light winds. We are about 20k pounds vs 12,000 in the last boat... big difference. I will say that I don't miss fiberglass. Aluminum is just so reassuring and rock solid with no deck leaks. Mat

Love you guys! Question about doing a long sea voyage with Georgie - does she acclimate to it very well and quickly? What do you do for litter/box for that amount of time at sea? We have a 2 year old Russian Blue cat which we adore, and we're going to be taking her on our boat for the first time (Vancouver, 60+ ft power yacht, not a sailboat), and I'm worried about sea sickness she could have or other potential problems. She'll have tons of space, it's a very large vessel, but other than that we're cat noobies for taking her out to sea for a week or two.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it seems to depends on the cat. Georgie has gotten sick twice, but usually is completely fine and in control. But, we have friends with cats that get seasick every time they move the boat. I think you're doing it right spending shorter times at the beginning to see how your cat reacts. When at sea, and further than 3 miles away from land, we empty the litter box clumps overboard and fill as needed. The litter box is in a concealed area under our stairs. Matt
