Spraddle Leg / Splay Leg in baby birds. LETS FIX IT!!

In this video we're going to talk about spraddle leg / splay leg and how to fix it. I will show you several methods to use in order to correct these symptoms.

Having to correct my Emu's spraddle. One leg is straight and strong, the other kicks out to the side. I am using straws. One up top to keep his knees apart, one low to keep his feet together both with a rubber band fed through. It looks funny, though it does appear to be correcting the problem using the one strong leg to force the other straight and parallel. Very stressful as their legs are vital to their survival.

Hello again..well to make a long story short.. My little baby is doing great. I named my baby Angel.. The vets didn't have any time for it..only had appt for a week from now.. Anyway my question is.. Angel has gotten big for its incubator. It's only 13 to 14 days old..i have made a broader out of a plastic clear bin..would have liked to send you a photo of the bin as well as my angel.. What to do ??? Thank you

Would it work with a tiny but adult bird too? A Caroline wren that has been living, and nesting around my house for years injured her leg on my screened patio. I managed to take a close look and I don't see breakage or fracture and doesn't look dislocated. It looks very much like this chick of yours - splayed. It points out the side of her. I put her leg back to its right position and if she lays on it, it stays there but it moves back out as soon as she moves and tries to get up. This prevents her to stand up or fly. I tried to hold the leg in the right position for a couple of hours and she seemed to like it. I was wondering if I could put something on it to hold the leg in the right position for a few days and if it would help the same way helps your chick. It's a tiny wren, not much bigger than your chicks. Her mate comes in the patio and feeds her and waiting for her to get better.

Question, if you wouldn't mind answering the best you can. I have a 7 day old cockatiel who does not like having all the extra paper towels around it, and will actually move its splayed leg up and on top of the extra material. I have a pipe cleaner, and I want to give it a shot, but I'm curious as to how you go about it. I haven't been able to find other how to videos for pipe cleaners, and I'm a visual learner. Is there any way you could explain it for me, a novice. I'm hand rearing this baby, and I definitely want to give it its best chance! Thanks in advance! PS, you replied to comment I left last week on your feeding from 2hr to 2 weeks old video, regarding crop stasis. Your advice was extremely helpful!

I will try my best. If you look at the video you can see I made a loop around one end of the shortened pipe cleaner. put one leg in that loop. Not so tight that it cuts the blood circulation off. then take the legs put them in position (meaning the correct position without splay leg.) wrap the other end of the pipe cleaner around its other leg like you did the first one. you most likely will have to trim some excess pipe cleaner. I have a baby canary about two weeks old now, who has splayed legs. The other leg is twisted outwards from one of his joints. Can it be corrected, so that it will be a normal leg? I tried the cone treatment with very soft paper and sterile bandage, which materials are ok for him, but it seems not to be effective enough, since his leg has not improved during these couple of days now. The baby canary is so tiny and has such a thin and delicate skin on his legs that any rubber band or plaster cannot be used. What treatment method(s) would you suggest in this case? His parents are very cooperative and are feeding him beautifully even if I have removed and put him back to his nest, also the baby is very calm and nice, and looks well otherwise than the splayed legs so I would with to get him well, since he is such a happy and fine baby bird. Please, could you maybe help me to get him well?

The amount of tissue damage that you're describing, my advice would be to seek a avian vet.

All you have to do is get some women's elastic hair bands....the kind you'd make Pony tails with. You need the ones covered w soft material. Cut it so you have a straight line. Pull in each end to make the leg cuffs and sew that loop you've just made down....sew it by hand. Your done. Have someone hold the bird and you open the 1 leg cuff loop and just put the foot thru the loop. Repeat for the other leg. If it's too wide take it off the bed undo 1 cuff and pull it in....sew it down. Your done!

Hello again.. Well I have been feeding angel since hatchling.. Everything is good.. Up until now. Not sure if I have been over feeding angel.. But the crop is always big and angel is always asking for food.. I spaced out feedings to about 4 to 5 hours apart sometimes 6 hours , just to see if crop would go down.. And it hasn't.. I did something not sure if I was supposed to.. But I made angel throw up.. Emptied it's crop.. Then fed angel its regular feeding.. I am using a 5ml syringe.. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong..?? Help

I'm not there to see all the details. But if you chick is not moving food through it's system, is sounds like your chick has slow crop. My advice would be seek out an avian veterinarian. Your bird could have a yeast infection.

I like to pull my chicks from the parents approximately two to three weeks. I want them to be good and healthy and starting to break out their pin feathers. At that point I take over all of the hand feeding. They will no longer be with their parents they will be in a brooder. It's this time of handling them that tames them and makes them friendly. I'd like to leave the bird in the nest, it looks big and strong, btw, and let the parents continue to feed it (as long as they don't try to 'yul brynner' the bird which they did with the previous batch, those I did handfeed and they recovered). Is there some way short of pulling them from the nest amd doing 100% hand feeding to hand tame them?

@@allandavis6116 I suppose you could try doing that. To be honest I've just never done it that way. I have so many babies that I have to hand feed. I let the parents feed them until I'm ready to take over completely. From macaw babies to lovebirds this is the way we've always done it. Good luck to you. Kevin

This will be different for every bird. I like to remove it every few days just to check the progress.

Is it normal for a baby chick to have a weak grip on legs at first? Does the grip develops later on a splayed leg?

Its been my experience that once the splay leg is corrected the grip is normal. I guess any bird could be different but!!!!!

I made a connector between his legs (elastic thing and sewed the loops for the legs) but I think it’s still wide enough but even that improved his grip as we also do exercises which my husband found on internet. There is some progress there within 1 day. I do some treatments as well: calcium water… I may create a slightly narrower connector. Now he can sit on both legs but tends to lean on one side towards a strong leg. I do what we can, the parakeet is 4 weeks and 2 days old now.

Okay I went to your channel and I was able to see the video. In my opinion the bird looks totally fine. A bird's skin can range from a light color to dark. The original gray in a cockatiel had grayish black feet. If the bird is eating and pooping and growing. And it seems to me walking fine on its feet. In my opinion I don't think there's anything to worry about. If you are more concerned about it then my opinion would be seek a qualified avian veterinarian to evaluate.

NEED HELP PLEASE..my baby cockatiel's leg is bad.. Now it doesn't want to stand much.. When it does the foot is upward and stands on its ankle.. It was hatched on 9/10/21..very sad please help..

This doesn't sound like you're describing splay leg. It's possible that this young chick had difficulty in the egg and this foot leg was deformed. My best advice would be seek an avian qualified veterinarian. Again, I don't think this is straddle leg by the way you describe it. Best of luck with this baby. I've been down this road and it's never easy.
