Does manure actually add to the increase in yield? Wouldn’t it be acidic?
@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
Yes somewhat lot of nutrients in manure but you have to apply a LOT per acre to see a big boost in nutrients because of the sheer volume of material... I was going to apply chicken litter one time and the analysis on it was 3-2-2 (IOW, 3 lbs nitrogen, 2 lbs phosporus, 2 pounds potassium per TON of litter! "Chemical" fertilizers (dry, liquid, etc) are typically 28-32 lbs nitrogen per HUNDRED pounds of fertilizer, for instance, and can be blended to whatever proportions you need based on soil tests, or split applications of dissimilar formulations made-- for instance, applying the bulk of the nitrogen needs as anhydrous ammonia (which cannot be blended since it's a pressurized cryogenic liquid) while the remaining N needs are applied as a liquid blend of 32% aqueous ammonia with phosphate and potash slurry or micronutrients like sulfur slurry added into the mix, or a blend of dry fertilizer pellets spread by a spinner truck... Manure *can* be acidic but it greatly depends on the type of manure it is (say broiler or layer chicken litter versus cow manure, bed pack, hog manure, etc.) but acids have very little effect on the soil compared to alkalies... you can increase pH easily with applications of lime, but it's almost impossible to lower pH with acid applications to the soil... Later! OL J R: )

Eastern Shore MD has very obtuse and complicated rules, but generally it’s prohibited to spread poultry manure from like Dec 15 to Mar 1... I thinkkk. Like I said u bout have to be a Philadelphia lawyer to decode the rules. Bay Foundation and all...I get THAT part, but the statute needs simplification in my view.
@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
@@bobcrone6151 They mostly frown on applying manure on top of snow, because of all the runoff issues in the spring most of the manure or nutrients out of it leaches into the water and ends up in the creek, so its a poor use of the manure and poor practice... course that doesn't mean some jackwagons don't do it LOL:) OL J R :)

Depends on how thick you want to spread it... in season like this where they want to take another cut of hay (most likely) you gotta spread it thin so you're not baling up sh!t later on with the hay LOL:) Course to really meet the fertilizer needs of a given piece of ground you have to spread it on pretty thick, which is fine in the fall or early spring before the crops come on, or when you can till it in... You can get a manure sample analysis that will determine the nutrient levels available per ton and you can then plug that into your fertilizer recommendations from your soil tests to get an idea of how much to apply, or how much to deduct from your later chemical fertilizer application on ground where you applied manure... Later! OL J R :)

It seems like the cost of one of these Wheelman units would be fairly easy to recoup, even for a smaller operation, if one takes operator fatigue savings and overspread/undercoverage avoidance into account. I know it's not for everyone, that goes without saying. I think it did a great job for the task at hand and would be interested in seeing how it would perform during spring spreading, especially with other spreader models.
