I watch a British dahlia gardener and he recommends cutting off those long sprouts back to where they come out of the tuber. He also said having only one stem per plant yields more flowers than multiple stems. Just fyi.

Awesome! That is so cool! I have hesitated growing dahlia because the one time I grew them they didn’t make it over the winter

If anyone's dahlias have those long pale sprouts and wants to multiply that variety, they will root really easily.

@@DMbabeful I was a little nervous, but I really didn't want to deal with digging, storing, and replanting. Last year was my first time growing them, so I did some searching around for people in my zone and found a P Allen Smith video where he talked about how they say you should dig them in our zone, but he leaves them, and they do fine. So I felt a little better about it. Definitely glad it worked out! Now my biggest concern is a late frost! 😅

This was helpful and useful! I am starting some dahlias from seed, but also bought some tubers, and I am going to try this for getting them started. BTW I did winter sowing this year for the first time and it was awesome! You inspired me to try it, so thanks!

I tried growing my first dahlia tuber last year, seemed to be going great and then I over-watered, it died...trying again this year and now I'll give winter sowing a shot once the nights are above freezing.

You could just save those baggies for next year's Dahlia storage, right?

Do you trim those long sprouts off before planting them in their permanent location? Mine have all woken up like that in their shipping container and I am not sure what to do with them. Leave the long growths on the tubers or cut them off before planting?

Thanks for this video, I hadn't thought of doing winter sowing for dahlias. I'm curious what your average day and night temps are? We're approaching our 6 weeks until last frost but I'm not sure our daytime highs are warm enough yet to do this.

I noticed you kept all the tags on. So I am assuming then there will be no issue with it getting in the way of the growth then ? Thank you for sharing this video it is very helpful!

So I just planted dahlias. I know I’m late. They came in the box already sprouted. Was I supposed to cut those back? Some of those sprouts or eyes were pretty long.

Do you have to pull your Dahlia tubers

Hi. I've been watching your channel for awhile and I'm so glad you talk about things you do more than once. Some gardening things I'm doing now that I've retired are new and repeat information really is helpful, things come up, refreshers like your dahlia video are helpful. So here's my question if you know. I'm in zone 7 Maryland and last year was my first year growing dahlias. I wasn't willing to dig them up so I chanced leaving them in the ground. I don't know what I thought I should expect but last week I was pretty sure they didn't make it so I went digging for them. Ooopps, quite a few of them were fine but now they're up out of the ground. What do I do? Presently I tried dividing some and did like you did today and I'm trying to pre-sprout them in lightly moistened soil. I dug up some today and I decided to just put them in pots and see if they sprout, (although they already had sprouted a little). I'm afraid I've disrupted their growing and they're all going shrivel up and die. Should I have put them right back in the ground and chance a frost or freeze? I did find 6 plants that had sprouted above the ground and I left those in the ground. I certainly learned to be more patient and wait to see if they come back closer to May than the beginning of April. Do you think they'll be ok? Sorry for the long question.

I’m in Melbourne Australia and did the same thing , I did replant them straight away and got mixed results but we don’t get hard frosts anymore, I would just put them back and put an umbrella over them if firsts are predicted. I’m also just retired and agree with your comments about the refresher, enjoy your dahlias, mine are gorgeous this year

Had a question to Freshcutky or to the populous... if i got tubers and they were starting looking like dried plums and was getting soft.. not hard.. it is possible to still put this just below soil and hydrate them and possibly bring them back to life?? I know they tubers should be hard to be healthy and good but when they are getting in that state i mention above.. is it still possilbe to raise the dead in this matter?

I left last yrs in the ground, actually my first yr as well, zone 7b here. I see one popping up, fingers crossed for the other maybe 12. I did have some in big planters that I moved to the shed, have to pull those out. I just yesterday got an order I forgot about, 5 more, I'm going to check those for eyes and divide what I can. Look forward to seeing yours bloom. What are you going to do if you get the opportunity to move.?!

I'm in zone 7 too... I grew dahlias for the first time last year, and left them in the ground (after watching some P. Allen Smith videos saying he left his in). Most of them have come up. 😊

I wish I had know this video was coming and that you'd write the information about your dahlias. I'm zone 7 Maryland and I didn't see any growth so I went digging figuring they had all rotted or something and lo and behold some were gone but some were fine in the first area I had planted some dahlias. Area 2 I checked a week later and I saw one coming up but again I figured the others didn't make it but I was wrong. Upon closer inspection I ended up finding 6 had sprouted which I left in the ground but I ended up digging up 5 and then had to determine what to do with them. I decided to try and pre-sprout the first group of 4 and the ones I dug up today I potted in the hopes they grow in the pots and I can put them back in the ground in a couple of weeks. I learned to be more patient waiting until May to determine if they're viable and that zone 7 really can overwinter dahlias, if not all, surely some.

@@hd1ab1 Maryland huh...me too, I'm on the shore. I just see the one so far, I'm new to Dahlia tubers.
