The red tape recorder might seem bad, but it has one use: countering frontier justice engineers. Most frontier justice Engies will just let a sapper run on a sentry so they can get crits. If you are using the stock sapper on an frontiers justice engies, it does nothing but benefit the engie. They get crits and it's not too hard to slap down another sentry. With the red tape recorder though, it takes longer and disables the sentry while doing its work. Of course, he could just destroy it but once the red tape recorder has shrunken the sentry into a box, he cannot destroy it. This may lure the engie in so you can kill him (this may work even better with the cloak and dagger). Just a thought though.

Cloak and dagger can be used with Le'tranger for normal cloak duration and the gun and regen .

The spy-sicle is basically a side-grade that has a situational upside that comes up a lot more than you think, while the downside doesn't come into play if you have a good idea of the team composition. If there is no pyro on the team, its just stock with a cool death effect.

I prefer Spy-cicle to stock because it helps me with pyros. I despise the deadringer and prefer stock watch so I can actually be behind enemies instead of being an obvious deadringer. The fact it saves me from pyros has been SO useful, especially given the new meta of "Hold down m1 as you shake your mouse every where" that pyros have adapted. Plus the ice statues kinda help with paranoia, and makes enemies more likely to look for you, and not at your team.

the diamondback is basically a straight upgrade cause the -15% damage rarely comes into play plus you get free crits for stabbing and sapping i.e. what you do as spy. The poor ambassador needs headshots to crit when the diamondback get crits for basically playing spy normally. From a damage standpoint the diamondback is the best revolver (it's borderline overpowered). If this tier list was from a viabliity standpoint the diamondback would be way higher

I mean the DR has been nerfed to the ground to the point where it isn't always "there for you when you need an escape plan" compared to what it used to be. A watch that I wouldn't personally use compared to the stock since it isn't always consistent when you have to wait a long time for that shit to gain it's full meter back

Personally I like using the Spycicle and Cloak And Dagger and the Diamondback together to guard chokepoints and hallways with the DB as a backup plan if/when my Spycicle gets melted. The "Trapdoor Spider" technique as I call it.

The Cloak and dagger I find is much more useful as it allows me to stay in a good spot longer and can allow me to pick my plays and not have to scramble for ammo packs every few seconds, it allows you to be able to wait for the right moment to strike in more situations

@@john_stromboli The Cloak and dagger works best with the Stranger (translation of the guns name) with the extra Cloak but it isn't a must have. All the watches are good it's just preference but I don't like it when someone speaks ill of a good weapon

I do personally disagree with the spycicle because as you mentioned with the deadringer, no other watch can combat flames. While the spycicle does, if you go invisable and a pyro catches you out, you can cloak and disengage (unless the pyro is a great tracker, but at that rate not even the deadringer would save you). The only other knife that offers decent disengage is the kunai knife, but you need to get an actual kill with that to leave with enough hp, and the issue is you feel pressured to get another kill as you watch your 200 hp tick down constantly.

I feel like people dunk way too hard on the Amby after the nerf. "Only effective at close to medium range" is a downside shared with every single other one of Spy's weapons sans the diamondback with a crit stocked, and Spy has perhaps the easiest time of any class maneuvering into a position close to the enemies, which you should already be focused on doing since that's the only way to get a backstab. It's fine to miss two shotting snipers across the map, but it's definitely not anywhere close to the basically straight downgrade Enforcer

they should cut the diamond back clip by half, or down to 2 shots. They could (they wont) turn it into a derringer, those cool two shot pistols. That way it would limit the spy's ability to get like 6 crits and take out 3-4 people. Also it would be cool to have a pistol that isn't a revolver, and a derringer was used as a highly concealable pistol for saboteurs in WWI so that's pretty dope as well. Also having two bullets means you couldn't kill a heavy with one clip which is very fair.

I'm kind of confused because you put the diamond back lower in the list because it's not fun to play against yet you put the kunai in the S tier and didn't take into account whether it's fun to play against or not, which it is very much not fun to play against in random pubs. There is always another stupid person for a good spy to heal up off of while your trying to kill them. I'm also very surprised you put the DR above the invis watch. The invis watch is much more flexible I think and you can do more with it. I realize this is your personal opinions though and it was interesting to hear your reasons for everything.

The big earner i also believe should be in A tier because the possibility of chainstabs is much higher than kunai. other than that this list is pretty good good job.

Honestly, I understand why people see the big earner as a chain stab knife... heck, I used to as well. But after playing with it a decent amount, I found myself failing to chainstab, for no other reason than dying mid chain. I actually chainstab at least 75% more with the kunai, since I don’t die mid chain

The red tape recorder has two uses (I didn't come up with this) 1: Gunslinger engies. If you sap a mini they sometimes won't bother getting rid of it because of how easy it is to make a new one. The red tape recorder taking longer means if they play like this the overall time they have a sentry up will be less than stock. 2: Huge sentry nests. Downgrading 50 level 3 sentries into 50 level 2 sentries would make it easier for your team to have a 0.01% chance of breaking through the nest.

Also mvm:The robot engies unsap buildings because of them taking damage, so if you sap a building, the engie won't respond. But, robot engies are both so rare and so easy to destroy that in my experience in every mission you will either see them once or not at all

The Red Tape Recorder has a niche use against the Gunslinger, because mini sentries are so replaceable and spammable by taking longer to destroy them it essentially neuters the engi's sentry use better than outright destroying it with the normal sapper.

Other than the Diamondback (if it broken, then it should be considered top tier. It's a matter of how effective a weapon is, not how much it annoys the opponent), and Spycicle (simply because I play gun spy and the knife is more of a utility for me), this is a solid list. Great work!

its probably due to it beeing completely nullified in highander teams due to communications existing and the faster cloak drain not helping unless you are using the l'etranger or CnD since most youtuber take comp into consideration but it is a good casual knife especially for CTF if the intel has one or two engies (i dont think anything less that 5 ubercharges could effectly get passed a stacked engy intel defence)

While I appreciate your effort in pushing out such content, do try to work on your justifications for each item and why you placed them where you did Especially with the title of the video, and mentioning that you drew some inspiration from Uncle Dane, I for one expected this to be a video which attempts to be objective but instead I was disappointed that most points ended up being “I do not enjoy using this/it is not fun to play with”, “I do not use this in serious games”, “It is so useful” or “It is real good” When explanations are given, they are often unelaborated on, eg: this item does not promote teamwork by dealing 0 damage to buildings (Red Tape Recorder) or the health penalty barely comes into play (Kunai) Why does dealing no damage discourage teamwork? Why does the health penalty not come into play? Some points do seem to be going somewhere, but again, further justification is lacking, eg: With instant invis, it is much harder to track down a spy (DR) - Why is being harder to track so essentially for Spy when he ‘equips knives which reduce HP’? Why does the ability to get away (assuming your premise is true) trump the ability to infiltrate to the back lines as offered by IW such that the DR is placed higher than IW? eg: The speed boost from the Big Earner is not worth the HP penalty- this is an opinion statement, which is perfectly fine, but should be justified The given justification which revolved around ‘burst damage classes’ could be better. Why does the increased vulnerability to ‘burst classes’ make the Big Earner inferior to the Kunai, for example? What makes “burst damage classes” so threatening to the Spy? I’m not saying that I disagree with you, nor do I oppose people giving their opinions, I simply feel that they could be better justified Hope there were some takeaways from this Cheers :)

I’m going to use your premises to try to craft an explanation: While the Big Earner’s HP penalty of 25 HP might seem to only be 20%, critically speaking, the only HP that matters is the last (preamble) The reduction of 25 HP brings the Spy’s base HP to 100, which is changes key interactions with burst damage classes (point) For instance, the Spy could be 1-shot by a Demoman by a direct pipe and by a rocket at point-blank by a Soldier, but with stock, the Spy still survives, albeit with a sliver of health (example) While this may take the Spy out of combat for some time, the aforementioned point still stands that as long as the Spy is above 1HP, he still lives to fight another day and thereby apply pressure, which is infinitely more effective than staring at the respawn timer (explanation) This interaction comes into play especially on offence, where choke points are often flooded with spam, and the probability of getting randomly piped remains uncomfortably high. (justification of your premise) Additionally, with Soldier being the most popular class in casual, ... In essence, 1. Complete your argument 2. Explain why the hypothetical scenario you raised (eg: encountering ‘burst damage classes’ is a concern) Then, evaluate: The speed boost upon a backstab might allow for chainstabs, but for the Spy to fully utilize this, he needs to stay healthy for the whole duration (point) Unlike the Kunai which does not restore the Spy’s HP, the threat of instantly dying right after a stab persists, ... OR Evaluate how situational it is: The speed boost is most useful when facing multiple unaware opponents to get a chain stab on them, however, it is not always the Spy is presented with such an opportunity (point) Many times, opponents clumped together are not entirely oblivious and there would be at least one player looking behind. The Spy’s best bet to secure a reliable kill is to go after isolated, distracted enemies (explanation) For example, going for a Sniper in the backline is generally a better play than rushing for an unaware combo. While the Spy does get a speed boost for killing the sniper, such a speed boost so far away from the action achieves close to nothing as there are no other enemies to kill (example) These are some hypothetical arguments you could use to strengthen your points

I feel like Spy-cicle is a direct upgrade to knife, if some pyro shoots you while you're in opposite team's back (i mean, that your work as a spy), you are automaticly dead. Spycicle can save you, though you become quite useless (unless you know where all the ammokits are)

In my personal experience, it's *extremely* easy to get away from bad situations with the stock invis watch by air strafing in random directions and paying attention to nearby classes: Scout: try to go run away in a single direction as scout struggles to kill what he can't see soldier: stay at a distance but be patient and follow where he is looking and avoid rocket splash pyro (or classes using bleed, jarate or milk): try to hide behind objects and keep direct view to a mininum as debuffs vanish faster when under cloak demo: get far away and don't go near stickies, but don't go in a predictable line as he may fire a pipe in an obvious direct and catch you engineer: same as scout, but if you got a sapper on his buildings you can easily reset and push again heavy: bhop backwards away and get behind cover to avoid tracking medic: stay out of melee distance sniper: just run away and avoid jarate spy: spies tend to search nearby so often just leave and they'll give up demoknight: just do really dumb movement and hope they don't find you things to remember: dont disguise immediately after a kill as the smoke will mean the enemy will be able to track you, wait until safe or invisible before disguising crits and mini-crits show above your head even when invis so you can be tracked that way debuffs end much faster under cloak so if you can't win with the revolver or are on low health, your best bet is just to go invisible always look for dropped ammo as it will restore half of your cloak (extra 4.5 second or 6.5 with l'etranger) which makes a big difference I always have advocated for full stock spy, and unless valve updates this game, I don't plan on stopping

The smoke can actually be more of a help than hindrance, as you can bait enemies by going one way while cloaking, then immediately changing directions once fully cloaked. Once you get the timing down, this opens up a whole new world of gameplay. It's also one of a few reasons why Dead Ringer is the worst cloak (imo).

My loadout when playing spy (please note I’m terrible at spy) is the le’tranger, big earner, and cloak and dagger. I dub it the “get cloak or go broke” set. The le’tranger mixed with the cloak and dagger negates the cloak drain sorta and the big earner gives even more cloak along with that speed boost to either retreat easier or go for more stabs. I like it cause it makes me think on wether to go for one stab and retreat or go for more stabs to help my team by getting some extra picks.

Uhm Cloak And Dagger can be used to guard. Or trolling. Spytroll: You need to go on enemy's base, to the intel, cloak and sit here. In most cases there are 50 intel engineers. You sit there, in some place where they can't find you, and use voice commands. Also often intel engineers is building 50 teleporters, and you can troll them by teleporting and telefragging them.

Speaking from experience, I tend to use the Big Earner a lot ever since Soundsmith made a video and, as it turns out, I enjoy it quite a lot. Doesn't mean I don't get why some Spies use the Kunai, however. Maybe it's just a skill issue, but when I use the Kunai, I just die. What kills you with stock: Fully-charged bodyshots, melee crits, Huntsman headshots, backstabs, Cow Mangler charged shots, etc. What also kills you with Big Earner: Any Scout primary (Backscatter too, possibly?), a direct hit from any Demoman primary, melee crits from a Scout, Huntsman arrows, Revolver crits, Diamondback crits, Ambassador crits, etc. What also kills you with Conniver's Kunai (overheal barred): Any Soldier primary, any Demoman secondary, melee mini crits, any shotgun at point-blank, any melee weapon with a damage bonus, etc.

I tend to switch between the invis watch and the cloak and dagger fairly often. On game modes with progressive stages (like attack/defend and payload) I start off with invis watch, switch to cloak and dagger if I find I can’t quite reach an ammo pack or see an opportunity for a big ambush, then switch back to the invis watch if I find I’m playing too passively. For game modes more focused around a single circular area (like king of the hill) I usually run invis full time, since an ammo pack is almost always within reach.

Honestly I think the red tape recorder needs one change, one change to make it a lot better. Rework it to add one stat, and that is it takes a whole lot more hits to destroy, but the downside is that it can't degrade the sentry to just a toolbox anymore, only to level one. That way it makes the red tape recorder as a stalling kind of sapper, to waste the engie's time, because if you use the sapper and destroy their buildings, they can just slap down another one. But with the RTR you can make the sentry inoperable for a minute to two, effectively making the sentry useless instead of destroyed.

For me, the Spy-cicle is a direct upgrade from Stock due to how I’ve pretty much memorized the location of every ammo pack on all the maps I play on and since I’m invisible when I get lit on fire and need to recharge the meter.. it’s very rare that I get caught with my pants down and without a knife, plus the “turn to ice” effect is cool

the spycicle and letranger are in practical terms upgrades from stock and so is the Amby in the hands of someone with good aim. Cloak and dagger isn't really much worse than default invis watch and is even better on smaller, tightly packed maps. otherwise good list

The cloak and dagger is my favorite watch, i use it with l'etranger and get normal cloak. The no ammo pick up while invis isn't really a big deal to me because one can just uncloak really quickly and grab it and boom you get cloak. The cloak and dagger lets spy hide really well because he can be hidden indefinitely, I think it adds survivability without sacrificing on demand invis like the dr

Also, the Ambassador is better than the Diamondback in a pinch...once you run out of crits with the DB, you're SOL, whereas if you can reliably hit headshots, the Amby becomes a lot better...

i have a reason to use the red tape recorder becausethe engineer can just break the sapper and heal the sentry gun and that uses less mettle for other things but the rtr down grades the sentry gun and that uses more metle.

The amby is a good side grade, it is much more limiting in it's range, but in close/mid range, where spy is effective already, it can 2 shot almost all 9 classes except for heavy. It is bad at longer ranges, but that just makes it more of a sidegrade to stock, making it the close range or "fuck I missed my stab because hitreg" gun. But hey, at least it is more balanced than the old amby, and at least it's not the daimondback.

I'm not good at managing things or, y'know, staying alive. So I'm pretty bad with the Diamondback, no matter how powerful it is. What I love about it though and makes it enjoyable to use is the bullet sound effect, it rings out and echoes and just sounds so powerful.

The nice thing is that most spy mains can't aim and they usually use the ambassador or really anything other than the stock revolver and from what I know all his revolvers aside from stock can't do random crits, so you don't have to worry about that. *Unless they are just really fucking good at aiming*

I find Cloak & Dagger best for finding good opportunities. Sometimes the enemy team is really competent (or you're not) and you can't get away with running around wildly. In this case, you can be more patient with the C&D and wait if there's no good openings at present.
