I've always loved Yor, but I was so happy with how they expanded on her character in season 2. As someone with autism, her insecurities about being weird and struggling to make and maintain personal relationships outside of her immediate family all resonated with me deeply. And it's also just so so nice to see a physically strong woman whose very loving and kind but can sometimes struggle with being physically gentle because it doesn't come naturally to her, even though, as a mother and wife, she feels like it should.

I LOVE ANYA SO MUCH. So often in these child care animes the child is not much more than a token cutesy pet the protagonist drags around but Anya actually has a full personality and has her own little arcs and goals. The little kids shenanigans are actually my favorite part of the show 😂

This show actually reminds me of Avatar the last Airbender because there both storys set in a war but the war it self isn't important what is important is how it affects the characters.

I absolutely love Spy X Family. It’s a show I truly can’t get enough of. I love that all the characters get quirky personalities but are valid due to the fact most of them was caused by war in some way. It’s both funny and sad at the same time. However, I wish you went into more detail about Loid’s character apart from just his humorous side like how you did with the rest of the cast because I feel like you under sold him. The way he tends to overthink is hilarious, but it is also a testament to just how stressful his life as a spy is if he’s always expecting the worst case scenario. I mean, he never slows down to examine his own feelings. One of the things that stuck out to me in his disastrous date with Yor episode is that he wondered if Anya playing spies again and he asked how is that even fun. He believes there’s nothing good about it except that he can make the world better. He's miserable in his career and he can't even identify as much. Loid is a highly logical but sympathetic man who is considerate to everyone but himself.

Just read your comment and felt I had to respond to it. It's so profound about Loid, who I see as a complex character with quite a few contradictions. He had a traumatic childhood, has been living a life of deceptions, and finally starts caring for a family that was meant to be a facade. "Loid is a highly logical but sympathetic man who is considerate to everyone but himself." Oh wow...that hits me hard. Considering his horrible backstory and how his childhood was ripped to pieces, he doesn't know how to lighten up, to have fun, or be kind to himself. (He *tried* to dress up as what he thought was a "cool dad", but failed because it wasn't genuine). Maybe on some some level he thinks he doesn't deserve compassion for surviving the last war while people he loved died. But the beauty of this show is that while Loid can't restore his own childhood innocence, he's making Anya's life better in every way. She has a good home, her own beautiful room, a bed to sleep in, a father who cooks, studies, and protects her. Just as Loid is making Anya's life whole, and bringing fulfillment into Yor's life as well, he's filling the void in his own life even if he isn't aware of it entirely.

I found something both relatable and sad about Becky: she doesn't really have feelings for Lloid. Becky is a lonely kid. She had trouble making friends and, even after Anya came into her life, is lonely at home because her parents are rarely there. She watches a lot of tropey romance shows, which led to the idea that the cure to her loneliness is a handsome man. Becky does not love Lloid; she loves the idea that he could be the cure to a loneliness she doesn't fully understand yet.

A few things about Damian. It's okay to not like him, but he's not the way he is for no reason. He's a neglected 6 year old boy who just wants his fathers attention and is trying to become an imperial scholar and be the best just to live up to his family name. And considering the rest of his family, it's a miracle he didn't turn out worse. I know people in the fandom ship Damianya, but I think it's just adorable. It's just puppy love. Kids get crushes all the time. I see most people ship future them tbh, which is still kind of weird ngl. And as much as I dislike when he's rude to Anya, there are many other times he sacrifices for her. He isnt mean to her because he likes her hes doing it to hide the fact tht he likes her. We know how much he wants to become an imperial scholar and impress his dad, but he tries to catch the ball during dodgeball because he didn't want it to hit her, sacrificing his chance at getting a Stella (even thiugh he isnt know you wouldn'tget one), then he sacrifices the macaroon and let's Anya win the game because he saw her crying (even though it didnt work), then when Anya gets her second bolt due to the handkerchief, Damian sees her crying and decides to tell the truth, but Anya stops him (because then they'd get in more trouble). There's another instance of Damian sacrificing for Anya in chapter 71. And I can't help but feel bad for him because, like you said, Anya doesn't like Damian at all (and I don't blame her because he can be mean to her) he likes Anya because he thinks she cares about him and not his family name when it's only for the mission, which would destroy Damian if he ever found out. Fun fact: Damians character is actually inspired by Tsukasa Domyouji, who fell in love with Tsukushi Makino after she punched/kicked him. Tsukasa and Tsukushi are from a manga series called "Hana Yori Dango" (Boys over flowers), and it spawned off several live action adaptations from different countries.

"platonic co-parenting" hmmmmm... *Aggressively taking notes* I'm currently writing a sci Fi thing for fun about this crew on a spaceship with aliens, very much in the vein of what I'd imagine is something that could have been going on in the background of Mass Effect 1 or 2. The comms officer, Krik, is from a species that is visually blind but has awesome hearing and finds his way around by echolocation and is from a very communal hunter gatherer society that was still very early in its development, before a big corporation landed mining equipment on the planet and poisoned it resulting in the species needing to be evacuated. And then only a few generations later they're dying out in a similar situation to the krogan. Krik finds an orphan abandoned on a station one day and is doing his best to raise her on board the ship and names her Songbird, due to how he heard her singing out in fear when she was alone. Fast forward to the point of the story happening and Songbird, calls most of the crew "Uncle" or "Auntie" due to everyone sharing the duty of taking care of her, but now the "platonic Co-parenting" idea makes me want to kind of come up with a word for it that she can call the crew. Thanks for the idea!

I was really hoping you'd talk about the interview table punching scene because it's one of the scenes that really stuck with me reading the manga. Something about Loid repating to himself all the logical reasons why he shouldn't be upset or feel disrespected because his family is fake and kinda desperately grasping at straws to control himself amidst being absolutely enraged about his family being hurt is a really really interesting character development moment for him and also really heartfelt and sweet, you can really see the care he ended up building towards his family even early in series, i just find it to be a really outstanding scene .

I think that I love about spy x family, is how the war is like an Eldridge threat you always see glimpses of it, but you never actually see what caused the war or the battle tactic that was used in the war (except bombing civilians and trench warfare because well they got a show something) you only know that it’s something all the good characters want to avoid at all cost and it’s really surreal seeing these characters, so terrified of this event making it a very realistic thing.

I believe a character not having a good first impression isn't the worst thing that can happen in someone's watching experience. Heck! It might even be the best evidence for the creator's ability to recognize a problem and succeding at fixing it. With Yor it clearly paid off. If i have to make a guess Tatsuya probably created Anya and Lloyd first and Yor was an afterthought and more a design, because it would explain how the characters start off in Season 1. One tip i like to give creators out there is that is okay if you have an ensemble of character ready for your story but you feel one or two characters isn't very interesting by comparison, i'd urge you to just create a small number of "test stories" just to see how these characters would work out in practice, maybe then you realize their potential. Anyway starting the year off with a banger! Good Job!

I think this video broke me with how unbelievably funny it was, though that might have had to do with me getting my booster and flu shots earlier yesterday before I watched it. In all seriousness, hearing about Yor made me go, "Oh no" and "Aww" several times. I was not expecting an anime taking place during the cold war to be this good at covering subjects like this, but color me surprised. I really liked the analysis of her character, especially with how it ties in with how the cold war screwed everything up.

I think it helps that the manga is ongoing and well in advance of the anime, meaning there's a set story to follow and, adaptational considerations aside, there's not a lot of room for the writers to write by the seat of their pants.

Also my favorite ship reading has been Loid and Yor as an ace couple as all the romance has been them going “what would a normal couple do? ive been reading the comics as they come out but man i need to watch the show...the part where Yor got hit by a car and kept going fucking sent me and the animation was just perfect lol honestly the only thing i find interesting about Damian is hes somehow the most normal and sane person in his family...i honesty wanna see what they do with the scene where anya reads Damians mothers mind (in a like audio/visual sense) also im suprised Bond the dog wasnt mentioned too, at least in the comic i thought he was a fun charicter

i love how this show appeals to damn near everybody. i generally stay in the realm of comedies in western animations when it comes to cartoons, my friend is a "im halfway thru one piece and going on strong" kind of anime watcher and both of us love the show. we watch it together on discord with another friend (hes cool and generally on board with anything to watch) and despite our vastly different preferences, we often end up thinking the exact same thing, its great. its just so funny and seeing the bullshit this wonderful gremlin child pulls off is delightful. and, mind you, my friend complained about the owl house being too fast. good comedy really is just the best thing ever... no, actually good comedy that is also very emotionally touching is the best thing ever

This comment is just going to be spoilers from the manga so skip it but i just felt like foreshadowing a couple of things: yes, nightfall does indeed get a little bit better even tho her motivations remain selfish, they take on a more self-sacrificing tone with her literally breaking her bones to save Loid, and the nice and cute mentor relationship she has with the handler is hinted at and it's honestly adorable. she also gets a nice thing going with franky and her working off her obsession with Loid with him while Franky works off his obsession with women by being forced to treat fiona like an actual human since she's scary asf and just straight up won't let him be a womanizer is nice, i think nightfall's character is being setup nicely in the manga with franky and the handler. Yor also expands her social circle even more! She'll get in a mom group and it's nice seeing Yor making more girl friends (one of the moms from that group is really nice to Yor and honestly i kinda ship it way more than twiyor especially considering the platonic coparenting you mentioned in the video), yor also keeps bettering her relationship with her coworkers and all of them get a little more meat on their bones and rapidly speed away from their original christie golden shtick. Damian progressively and slowly becomes nicer to anya, he flat out compliments her and buys her gifts, they slowly claw their way towards a more friendly relationship where both parties are just sardonic and bicker with each other in a friendly manner so that's nice, he even calls her a friend so yay! More damian not being an asshole pls. We get introduced to more of his family too and whoooo boy they're all different levels of messed up but still hilarious and interesting to me at least. But i digress, the manga is sure taking its sweet time but i think its setting up the characters really nicely so far

Honestly, I think platonic Loid and Yor endgame still have a significant chance of happening. I might just be aro projecting though... I once saw an article title 'why Anya is ruining Spy X Family' and my immediate thought was 'she's half of Spy X Family'. She influenced so much of the show, you'd barely have anything left if you got rid of her. One thing I love about season 2 is right from the get go, it's a Yor season. Even before the big cruise ship arc, she pops up first in the theme song when they do character introductions, and the first plot of the first episode is centered around her. It's like the writers heard your complaints (and my little sister's, actually) and went 'oh sorry, here's a bunch of Yor to make up for it!' and I love it. I love this show. It's like you said, even when it's bad it's at lest still funny. Also I like the little swipe audio and blur for your notes.

It’s such a blast watching spy family and the second season is even better. Yor is my favorite character she is badass but is absolutely hilarious anytime she does something I just love her development . Loid always cracks me up whenever things don’t go his way with Anya especially during the cruise arc. I’m so excited to watch the movie whenever it releases in the US. The cruise ship arc was awesome I was hoping for more Yor screentime and she had a whole arc to herself which made me love her character even more. Yuri is hilarious and his dub va being Asta from black clover makes it even funnier.

And now your new analysis just makes me more excited as I catch up on the show. Your analysis of Anya, Yor and Yuri were my favorite to hear. Great summary of the whole story so far (at least this animated part). I also want to thank you for the conclusion about Twiyor. I love them and I want them to have a romantic relationship but you gave me a new perspective on them. Which I am grateful for. I reread some of my favourite moments of them and I see a trail (at least with Yor) but at the end of the day I think that they just deserted to find and feel all spectrum of love especially romantic ones. It would be (in my opinion) a great example for mature love in genre and a real slow burning (kinda like in real life). However, thank you for the video ❤

My prediction is that Yor finds out about Yuri first. Imagine her realizing her fake family isnt necessary for her cover. But by that time they become her real family and she stays with them anyways, keeping her secret safe still. The story could easily continue from there.

Pretty much agreed with you on all points, but I do want to add two things if I could. The first is that that last part about Loid and Yor having a non-romantic relationship as endgame goes both ways as sure, Loid is far better at blending into polite society like he's always been a apart of it-but that's it, blending. He's a near perfect actor but he rarely feels connections or genuine emotions and when he does, he has no idea how to handle them-it's part of why Anya can play him like a fiddle as he doesn't get emotions and the parts of social norms that aren't important to his normal spy work, and she can use that against him. It's why he can misread Yor's mood so spectacularly as he has a childish understanding and relationships as he thinks that when a wife is angry, it's because of something the husband did. But he's learning, as in the finale, we see how he treats Bondo and how he shows that he was upset not because the dog was a bad attack dog, but because Anya(and him, he just won't admit it right now) would be upset that if he got hurt or was killed. He cares for life, and that drives him to learn more about his new family, connecting with them in ways he hasn't with another person since his parents. The second thing is the issue with Anya and Damian, as I won't deny it, he's a little shit to her and while he's a kid and gets a pass for most of it, I think most of the reason people ship them is because of those moments when she isn't in the picture, where we see he's more then angry brat that yells at Anya, that he has his own issues with his family and that his friendship with his two friends is both real and loving. To put it simply, it's the hope that he can get better since as it stands, he doesn't deserve to even be in the same room as her most of the time, it's why most artwork of them has then as teenagers at the least as he first needs to go through enough growth to be worth her time, That being said, if he remains like this, yeah I can see only the most fanatical(and creepy) shippers remaining on that hill to die on.

I was also amused by the bratty rich kid being named Damien, making me think of The Omen unintentionally to a comedic way. But a horror character being made into something goofy will seem a bit old hat huh? But that was where my mind went with an intolerable 6 y/o named Damien I guess. Anyway anyway Anya is the best character and doesn't deserve that 'he hits you because he likes you' anti-logic.

I love this analysis. Finally someone who sees that the point of this series is not the war (way too many people are saying the plot is not developing) and that the relationships are at the heart of this series. Operation strix is just a background for the development of the Forger family and I am here for it. I do agree that the Damianya ship is massively confusing as Anya blatantly cannot stand him. Even though Damian clearly has emotional issues, there are way too many red flags. In general, I think your character analyses are spot on, but I must have a slight disagreement about Nightfall. Yes, I thought she was hateful when she first appears, but despite her selfish desire for Twilight, she is an amazing agent who does play a significant role. I must say that I am actually quite pleasantly surprised at how great all the female characters are in the story (Not nearly enough is said about how fantastic Sylvia Sherwood is), and later in the manga even the co-workers get some love. Anyway, like I said, so glad that there are people out there who have seen the point of season 2 rather than just complaining because of the focus on characters. Awesome.

I believe the first 4 episodes are really good I look forward to what they do in the future. Stay Gone is a great musical number essentially at the end with The Radio Demon closing it but one criticism that sarcastic chorus pointed out how to destroy the premise by changing the reasoning for the yearly cleansing from over population to weakening hell and keeping more power because of this why is Charlie trying to redeem sinners to these monsters?

Well damn, the last time I watched Spy X Family it was just the first half of Season 1 at my ex's place summer of 2022 alone with headphones on AND this is the first I visually seen Anya cuddling up to Loid because said ex's Crunchyroll account refused to not autoplay to the next episode (and I wasn't gonna mess with her settings just because I'm someone who watches the whole episode without skipping intro/credit sequences and the like) among other things in hindsight I should have known ahead of time... ANYway~ I had thoughts of just rewatching from the beginning and what luck clearly it has only been just as good and even better than initially viewed that one night of forceful binging, trying my damnest to not laugh too loud least I wake up the ex except now I can take my time, hydrate, and definitely make sure I'm watching the full-text translation dub for that extra layer of comedy/context in-show~ Other than that, they really should just drop the "shonen" tag (I don't care if it generally means "targeted to young men/boys") and just say "ongoing" when both the "comedy" and "drama" tag are more on-point and just as universal of a description as "ongoing"... and that's my nitpick, Nightfall notwithstanding (though that clip of her just saying "I love you" is like as if the VA was having a ball akin to AOT Junior High's dub of Mikasa not always making her sound purposely monotone if said line(s) will sound comedically funnier in 2015), and I'll be hard-pressed if any opening/ending theme after the first opening and ending theme are better than just on-par at best~

I absolutely hate that you've convinced me Loid and Yor would be more interesting, compelling, and cute as platonic co-parents than as an actual couple. I feel like Anya, just thinking 'hey it'd be awesome to have a family where the dad is a spy and the mom is an assassin' without any consideration for the actual characters/people, except I don't have the excuse of being a traumatized 4-year-old. Part of me is glad I'll still get to see that romance but now I have to add 'like Spy X Family but as platonic co-parents' to my list of narratives I'm dying to see that'll probably not happen in my lifetime. Emotional relationships without sex or romance is something I noticed missing. I understand the internet being horny and expressing that, but writers really do pivot into making everything about sexual love. Something I miss from the 90's and 00's is how you can have two characters of the same sex express a deep love of each other and they're still just bros. With the acceptance of LGBT+, a good thing, we've lost that. and I think that's a shame. Now any expression of care is twisted into shipping and creators capitalize on it because the number needs to go up. Ultimately captialism is to blame. Well, I also know I try to address this in my own writing. In my book, I expressly establish a type of relationship called "Confidants". It's described as something like "Best Friend Plus" but there are expectations surrounding it. Your "Confidence Partnership" is seen to have the same weight as a "Romantic Partnership".

I'm kinda working a similar concept in my books! One of the protagonists is as OrphanTM as it gets, so he has no frame of reference towards what a normal family dynamic is, offset by another protagonist who is ancient and experienced, but constantly insecure and paranoid about letting down or hurting his loved ones, and a secondary character who is the sensible work-husband foil to protag 2 and a scholarly protective mentor to protag 1. It all unfolds into a jumbled mess of what is essentially multi-generational brotherhood, but plays out like two wryly bickering parents and a befuddled teenager struggling to find his own footing in life. All three have their own baggage with what family is and means to them, especially for protag 2 with the weight of having been a parent and the pain that comes of failing as one.

I think a lot super grimdark and super bland shows miss is that all the shows that they draw inspo from (and/or try to rip off) is this: THE GOOD SHOWS TAKE THEIR GOOFY CHARACTERS AND PREMISE SERIOUSLY. this is going to sound odd, but I think the point of nightfall is that she is boring. when she first showed up, i saw people saying that she is who Loyd should have gone with. that having Yor was a bad idea and that there should have been a female Spy assigned with twilight on the mission. but she is bad with Anya, and she would be bad for the mission and for the story. at some-point i just guessed the Mangaka was tired of hearing it and made nightfall to just got "this what you want? really? instead of Yor?"
