This is a collectors/ fidgeter perspective on a hard use tool steel knife.

“Backlocks are old and plastic feels cheap” says every knife reviewer on KZbin 🙄

Yeah true but people don’t realize this isn’t just a plastic handle. It’s FRN which means fiberglass reinforced nylon. Our cars are made of fiberglass. Parachutes and seatbelts are made from nylon. So your talking imagine your car but then reinforced with nylon fibers. It’s a very strong lightweight material. I know what you mean feeling cheap but once you think about what it’s made of to me at least I look at it differently. I agree those G10 and titanium do feel more premium. But pound for pound the weight to strength ratio is very high then you add in a steel like k390 and it’s strength to weight ratio is insane. Also the FRN has more aggressive grip when hands are muddy or bloody.

FRN is solid and can be easily chamfered.

Get a fidget spin... I use a knife EVERY day, this is truly a boring top shelf work knife. I have fun knives but this is my go to work knife along with my Para 3 and Paramilitary 2. They go in rotation as they go dull so I only have to sharpen twice a year (KME) with constant stropping. Right knife , Wrong guy. But that's ok if you understand what I'm saying.

I have the burnt orange Rex-45 Para 3 LW, am I missing anything by not having the Endela K390? The REX45 sharpens up on waterstones as well as diamonds.

K390 and rex45 perform nearly neck and neck in my tests. Both top teir high performance steels. The Endela is a more slicey thinner blade stock knife then the para3 or pm2. Rex45 is a very hard steel to beat, k390 is a very hard steel to beat, in use most people won't be able to tell a difference rex45 have a little more upfront edge retention and a little less working edge than k390 but in total cutting they will be neck n neck.

Very honest, thought through and fair review! Differently to you I happen to love both backlocks and FRN, so let me add some points: - FRN is not just "plastic", but actually pretty much as strong as G10 and even more resistent to impacts, while still being lighter. - Spydercos backlocks can be really fun to play with, but it takes more time to get "good" at it. I can flick open my backlocks with all fingers (pinky in a reverse grip of course) and easily close them with fingers all the time out of the blade path (something people seem to obsess about sometimes, while I actually don't find it important at all) There are also several ways to close a backlock one handed as fast as let's say a comp.lock - the one you are using in the vid is (no offense meant!) a pretty akward and slow one. Anyway, as said very good and honest review, thanks! :)

I totally agree with you on both FRN and backlocks.

You do not need two hands to close a Spyderco backlock knife. There's two ways to close them with one hand.

Counterpoint: the Native5 fidget factor is high for a back lock.

@@beardedgear that Native 5 is still a sweet knife tho, but it’s definitely not a fidgety knife at all.

I like using mine. I like how it cuts, sharpens and I love the patina. Backlocks aren’t fun but it works.

K390 is not great for a tackle box, since it will rust. This is a great knife, but it is best kept clean, dry, and oiled.

Agreed, rather get the Pacific Salt 2 in LC200n for the tackle box.

Fair review. Thanks. I don't dislike lockback knives (don't actively seek them out either) and have been eyeing this one or the aqua Native 5 in S90V.

Ended up getting the Native 5 in S90V and it is excellent. Highly recommended. (With the knowledge that it is a lockback)

I get the idea of just a tool knife. I have a Stretch 2 (the straight back sprint run one) that I keep in my backpack as a beater knife cause it's one of the better "tools" in my collection. I actually prefer it to a PM2 in terms of ergonomics. Not as fun, but very functional. Hoping to get the one in K390 soon.

My tool knife right now is Native Chief in Rex 45 and it feels a bit on the long side, so I am checking out the k390 Endela as a possible replacement.

You absolutely cannot complain about a 3.5 inch k390 spyderco for only $150 when it comes to the handle. I think they purposely made a cheap handle in order to make this one more affordable

It is almost funny listening to how boring a knife this is. Be thankful you didn't grow up years ago before most knives even had locks and many weren't even stainless. In those days a knife that was fun was a switchblade that could get you locked up.

I have to agree with you on both your points. I personally do not like back locks, and FRN handle material just feels cheap.

Do you have of those mermaid knives? They look quite exciting. For me, the most fidgety knife is the PM2., automatics, notwithstanding.

Pretty much plain and crap looking with an incredible blade above most other knives in edge retention . Put that blade steel on a civivi or something nice. They do feel cheap . User category and steel nerd category .
