I along with everyone else that has had there drone fly away from them hates DJI because they will refuse to refund your drone. Even if they can not come up with any excuses to be able to blame the accident on you. They will then make up one Such as “You we’re flying the drone in an improper flight environment” hmmm maybe they could tell me what an improper flight environment is in the instructions of what can void the warranty. They tried to tell me that it was my fault the drone disconnected in less that 700m away 🤷♀️ They then said the best they can do is give me 15% off a new one. Psh as if. If anyone wants to buy a battery, charger and controller off me, hmu please

I fly the Mavic too. But, this is why a lot of non-pilots automatically "hate" drones. They assume any drone is in the air spying on them (which is ignorance). I know he was your buddy - but the label of your video "Spying.." - just gives them more fodder for their paranoia. When my neighbors joke, "who are you spying on?" - I say - "Do you think anyone around here is worthy of spying on?" - and "Do you think it's spying when there's obviously a drone overhead?". If they only knew how wide angle the lens is - and how close you'd have to be to get any detail - they'd forget about it.
@Ride9067 жыл бұрын
Totally Understand your point, and even took that into consideration when titling the video. Hence the shudder quotes around the word to immediately imply a non-literal or ironic use of the word and making sure it was known it was a friend as well. Both those were intentionally done to dissuade those types of people.
@NightRunner4177 жыл бұрын
It's a tough call and very ironic when you think about it. You could have titled it, "Visiting My Friend" and people would be less reactionary but you'd get a lot less views. Title it "Spying", and oh boy lots of people insta-hate it and you get way more views.

Your lucky you missed the power lines in the RTH. It would have BBQd it. The drone can't see the power lines. Not going to flame you for breaking drone etiquette flying over the highway etc. I'm sure the drone police will be here soon enough. Just be weary of your surroundings if you send it beyond line of sight.
@NightRunner4177 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would have necessarily barbecued it but it could have very easily snagged and hung itself from one of the wires. Also, it would have been the talk of the whole neighborhood, which our hobby definitely doesn't need. For perspective, I hit high tension lines once with my modded FPV EasyStar. It hit right at the motor mount level and broke the prop and tore the motor free of the body. No barbecuing took place, just impact damage, which honestly suprised me. Also, no, I wasn't trying to fly through the wires. I forgot that they were there and on that setup they were really hard to see until it was too late. I flew old school FPV for years when it was a relatively new thing, and you're right... wires are a true menace to FPV type flight and you REALLY have to watch for them, always be super aware of your surroundings.

It was unsafe, and also the thing that anti-drone people rant against, that it could have fallen into traffic, interfered with actual pilots that often fly along highways as a navigation aid and wouldn't be able to see the little drone and could mess up their windshield, and the privacy and noise pollution concerns of having a buzzing drone in a neighborhood setting. Its much better for the hobby to keep these in rural areas flying over unpopulated wilderness. That's something everyone can agree is safe and wholesome.

If you weren't aware, more and more people are shooting at drones, getting drone "zap" guns that interrupt signal and cause crashes, and are demanding anti drone legislation from their representatives. The haters aren't right, but in a democracy everyone's opinions matter, and a compromise is usually the best solution. That compromise generally means don't fly over busy streets, and especially highways, don't be where other aircraft are likely to be, and don't fly over neighborhoods and if you have to stay at high altitude. This violated all those common courtesies. 10 years from now when we have to register for a drone license at the DMV, with a massive lawbook to follow, we'll otherwise know who to thank.

Ride 906 : Ignore all the naysayers commenting that you broke the law this way or that blah blah. Like a few others who have commented, pushing the limits is not only what drones are for, but life. And I personally had no idea drones could do what you just did. So I for one applaud you because you showed me that a limit I once thought existed for drones wasn't actually there. Now don't go breaking the law each and every time you take the thing out, but if you do not know the limit of the thing and you want to see what it can do at least once, keeping peoples safety and privacy in mind, then I say go for it!

Green Silver Thanks for the tip! Ive been trying to watch a few mavic instructional videos, I actually have slowed the gimbal and exp settings quite a bit..but still need to more, the amount of customizable settings on this thing is insanely awesome. Also, if you talking about the first 1.5 minutes of the video, thats all at 400% speed, which definitely made it look crazy jerky. And yea, i was even really impressed with the mile range. My karma disconnected on the same flight pattern much much earlier (1700 ft before it lost signal).

Love the video! Provides a lot of information. You probably have seen some KZbinr pilots stating that they have received letters (or emails) from the FAA, warning them of any UAV Rules infractions they (the FAA) noticed while viewing their videos. I would be very interested if this happens to you and are willing to share it. Personally, I live just a few hundred feet inside an airport no-fly zone - such BS!
@Ride9067 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And Yea I'll definitely share if I'm ever contacted as to hopefully stop someone from making a similar mistake. I always try to stay within the FAA regulations to the best of my knowledge :)
@NightRunner4177 жыл бұрын
John, I'm also very aggravated for the same reasons. I live in a large community (about 4 miles square) with a big airport SIX miles away. The FAA designated the usual 5 mile no fly radius around the airport, and then added an additional one mile "restricted airspace" circle around that. The end result is that I am about 1/2 mile inside their no fly zone, and HALF of the community with hundreds and hundreds of residences is also inside it. Bad enough having to brave a paranoid public and work so hard to convince them that you're not a mad terrorist/peeper/thief/whaeverthefucktheyarescaredofthisweek, you've got corporations and gov't up your ass every step.

I actually came up with a super snappy retort to the whole "Invasion of privacy" paranoid drone thing. "Trust me hon/dude, nobody cares that much." Anyway, thanks for the great video, and btw BIG LOL at 2:54, haha that was awesome. Something I've noticed... It always seems like in such videos, that it takes getting way closer to reconnect when signal drops out, like the dropout range is considerably farther than the reconnect range. Is that how it actually is or is it not as bad as all that? I'm close to getting one of these birds and am scouring and scouring the Net, crash coursing in all things Mavic before I get near one.
@Ride9067 жыл бұрын
NightRunner417 Haha, Nice comeback. As for the re-connect distance, it varies a little, but its not horrible at all. Only happened a few times to me so far and was usually somewhere between 5-30 meters depending on what caused the signal dropout.
@NightRunner4177 жыл бұрын
Yeah ok then... I kinda thought maybe either some people were just letting it RTH without interfering for whatever reason, or I was simply misinterpreting what I was seeing. Funny thing is... As a responsible and non-wealthy adult, I am "supposed" to be talking myself out of the expense of a Mavic, finding flaws in the very idea to support not doing it. Sadly, the opposite is happening, and I can feel the inevitability of the Amazon purchase looming steadily closer. I even drove all over my county today, checking out some places to fly, and I found a couple of good ones. I even have a coworker that says that she wants to go with me on my first trip out when I get it, lol. It's inevitable!
