I'll fix the English subtitles (add in the Japanese parts for the CC) and if anyone can help with the narration after that, I'd be very thankful for that!! The watermelon's main purpose now is as ornaments for decoration. When the melon grows to fit into the box it would be in the ideal shape and size for an ornament. There would thus be no point in making a bigger mold and allow the melon to grow bigger.

Hi Erik, great to meet you as well on our tour of Tokyo! The Awaodori in Tokushima was amazing! One day of it was not enough. It was sad to split with Lacy at the bus station. She bought some Japanese eye drops which burned a hole through our eyes! Pretty funny! I returned to Tokyo and had to leave again for Osaka on the bullet train for a meeting. Are you already back in New York? Saw your show -- was a lot of fun, esp escaping the guide to see the mega gyoza! Will binge your channel when I get back to Tokyo tomorrow. -J

Hey John! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Each video is a funny and an amazing journey into the japanese culture. I really hope I'll get the chance to go to Japan soon :) P.S: It would be great if you could add the english subs when you speak japanese too, not only on the video I mean. I'm doing italian subs for some of your videos and I've noticed that when we translate subs in other languages we can't add subs in those parts because the english subs are only on the video. If you could change that for the next videos it would be awesome. That said, thank you for your hard work ;)

Hi! Greetings from Southamerica! Nice video. That's a very expensive fruit. If I were in Japan I wouldn't spend such a big amount of money for a watermelon, but I see it is more like a souvenir to show people you have a treasure. I liked to see all those seniors working with a smile on their faces. They seem proud of their work, besides they are a good example of active and productive people. Great video John! Japan (and Korea) have what I like to call "trophy fruits". Oversized, hand picked, show fruits that are typically given as gifts to family/in-laws, bosses/clients, and anyone else you want to show respect for or impress. Kind of like our giant fruit baskets in the west, only quality over quantity. And a square watermelon beats a giant pear for wow factor.

That's a brilliant idea! Fits in the fridge, won't roll around once in there, easier to cut, portion and serve! I would love to grow some of these, undercut the Japanese market and ship them there for a fraction of the cost!

That's so nice of you to even compare it to NHK! They're much more professional, I think. I loved reporting on that show a couple of times / Daigo (2015) / Mihonoseki (2016) / , but the topics were quite serious and hard to enjoy the material. I prefer participating in events, trying things, a more entertaining style with as much fun as I can put in it. Easy to watch and remember. Always hope to be on JIJ again soon -john

You should make more videos where your questions are in the video and not cut and speak in Japanese more like this one, it's pretty cool !

Thanks for the tips! Really appreciate this feedback. Sometimes I cut the questions because it keeps the video flow fast and more in tune with other videos on KZbin. Some people said this episode was a little long. One viewer wrote to me and said people these days have short attention spans so I should keep the show moving faster, maybe make shorter episaodes. It's hard to make content for EVERYONE but if I keep getting great feedback like this, it really points me in the right direction on what viewers really want to see. THANK YOU!! -john

ONLY in JAPAN First of all, thank you John for your reply and you're most welcome. I've been watching your channel for a while and it's easily my top channel when it comes to learning more about Japan. And 2nd, to me it's just more interesting seeing that interaction between the reporter and people in there just like in this one video (which is my favorite so far). Appreciated, keep the awesome content coming and best of wishes! Side note: your Japanese is awesome and I like listening to those little jokes you do with the people

Had to look up what the temperature was in Kagawa Prefec. On most every video I see of Japan, no matter location, people say it's hot and just leave it at that. Best I can figure the hottest day thus far was 98F/36C. Most summer days,July/August being hottest, seem to stay mid to lower 90's. Not sure why that bugged me but there it is. PS: Love the videos John.
