Japan is famous for it's luxury fruits sold at auction for ridiculous prices! But where does that value come from? Is it all a marketing stunt, or do they really taste that good? We see them in the stores and they're expensive. So ー what is the true value?
Let's go to the Miyazaki Mango Auction and ask the buyer of the world's most expensive mango and the farmer.
The answer to WHY surprised me. It's not what I thought.
We not only learn about mangoes but Japanese culture.
Background:
Annually at auctions in Japan, the first blue fin tuna sells for over $1 million at New Year, melons in Yubari, Hokkaido sell for $30,000, and in Miyazaki, Mangoes sell for $5,000. How can a mango be worth so much? Is it the taste? The size? The smell? The color? The cultivar? All of the above? ー or just to get attention? ... or is it something more?
There is a deep respect for the farmers from the buyers and the stores that sell these luxury fruits. Of course buying a mango for so much money will get attention, but the motivation is completely different and I hope you can get a deeper understanding of not only mangoes but how Japan operates in business.

Unlike many other countries they do not have the rush just get it done mentality. Instead their focus is on getting it done properly and with great care and attention to detail. Granted the cost of these mangoes and the way they are farmed is unique. This is a more a high end niche item but even regular fruits like canteloupe etc are expensive in japan because they are imported.

These high priced mangos are purchased by Companies to give to their prime clients as Gifts of appreciation for their business. $5,000 mango package not only strengthens client loyalty but can also generate hundreds of thousands of extra orders from the client.

@theinnocent6303 5 жыл бұрын
Its a win-win-win situation then. For the farmer, the client and the company. I never thought of this before. Every time I read about overprice fruits I thought the buyers were ridiculous and just a bunch of rich people wanted to show off their money.
@drcommondrate12

Nah only companies are benefited here. These companies buy fruits from farmers and they buy them by bulk thus their price will be lowered. And these companies will put these fruits in a package and will hype it and will earn 2 folds from the original price. Not to mention that some companies have their own plantation and their employees’ wage is constant thus making them ti profit more.

@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN 5 жыл бұрын
Anti-Tumblrたんたん the $500,000 mango is sold at the store at auction price plus tax (¥540,000 total) Didn’t you see the photo of it? I put that in for that reason - they’re not making a profit on it. That’s not the purpose :) it’s a gift. A symbol. How can a work of art be valued at $1M? The value is arbitrary. Same as anything. But no one is profiting of the direct sale here except the agent (gets a %) and the farmer and since the farmer is selling thousands and thousands of mangoes, even $5000 is not a huge amount of money. It is when you see it as one mango but on the whole, it’s so small. Again, no consumer will pay more than $100 for one typically. I showed the same mangoes at the end for ¥8000 or ¥15,000. That’s $80 and $150.

Kobe B the guy who painted the sunflowers killed himself and whoever buys the rocks won’t outlive the existence of the rocks which will still be rocks long after they’ve died. @gordonbgraham
@gordonbgraham 5 жыл бұрын
@@nicoleheron It should be clear that I understand everything you've pointed out here. The value of the melons is imbued with the artificial meaning bestowed upon it by the culture, a culture in which perfection and precision are preeminent. The melons are never purchase for personal consumption. They are meant to be given as a show of respect and appreciation. They are seldom exchanged between individuals, but rather between companies. I've lived in Japan for 30 years. I understand the value of such things. Clearly, those in the comment section mocking the price know little about this custom in Japan. My comment was meant for them to have a little self-reflection about those things in their culture which have artificially inflated value. Cheers!

Food is a primitive experience that can be shared by all humans equally. Japan places food experiences very high, more than say, an American or Russian who globally perfer to scale mountains or find secret beaches. Having that singular cultural goal creates an economic competition and a class competition. I mean, Japanese folk will pay a few Bens to let a square watermelon sit on a shelf for five months. In America at least, we're all equally divided in sub-classist crap. Cars, $6000 purses, $2000 pants. Not much of the many cultures here in the states are very food-centric outside the Creole culture hubs. We pay insane amounts of money for worldly possessions here. Japan pays exorbitant prices for food experiences.

Outstanding report with excellent footage, production quality, in depth info and emotions. It's amazing to see the farmers getting so much appreciation for their super hard work. Energizing them to work even harder. Of course the winner of the auction and the Miyazaki Mango industry gets worldwide media coverage worth far more than $5000. So, it's definitely a win-win situation for everyone. Thanks so very much for the excellent, informative and also entertaining report, John and Kanae! One question: you showed a CU of a bee. Huge European tomato farms have started to rent bee and even bumblebee colonies and place them inside the greenhouses for pollination. Are the bees in Miyazaki free roaming and if so how do the Mango farmers get them inside their greenhouses?

Even in India there are mango auctions..... I have seen once.... But its some. what different.... Best quality gets best price... Not only mangos, red chilles but the sad is if the quality and quantity is good then the price will decreases.... Sometimes its a great loss to farmers bcz they cannot even afford to grow another crop....

Splurged on a luxury peach and mango in Japan last summer from a specialty store. Cost 30-40$ each. Everything about these fruit is perfect. The smell, the color, the sweetness, the intensity of the flavor. I'm in NYC so imagine the absolute best quality fruit you can get from a supermarket here and multiply that by 10x and you get one of these. Absolutely divine. As for the cost, eating one of these things to me is similar to savoring a bottle of 100$+ whiskey vs a 20$ bottle. They arent even comparable but they also arent things you do on a regular basis.

I have multiple mango trees in Florida, each a different variety. I cannot imagine my homegrown mangos being more flavorful, or having a better texture. Expensive mangos in Japan is a testament to profound inefficiency of production. Although, I will say strawberries grown in Japan are amazing. When visiting Japan, their strawberries all tasted like a strawberry smells-very sweet, strong flavored, very floral, and no acidity.

(Yank it from branch) let this worthless being be a lesson to the rest of yeah watching right now. (Walks down hallway, puts it into shredder then suddenly all planes shutter in fear, he comes back out) see what happens? Now GROW BETTER! Further explanation: Crowley is one of the demons that existed at beginning of man when him and a angel was assigned to watch humanity. Modern day Crowley learned he liked watering and growing plants with a human Told him talking to plants help grow better. He took note of that but instead of talking to them with nice words he threatens them. But the method does work better.
