Dude, it is a hidden gem. I played through the whole thing 100% and have no regrets, it's a 8/10 easy. I did grow up owning this game so it was nostalgic and that may be what made it for me but the game is amazing nonetheless imo.

Can't remember for the life of me but I have to thank this game for finding out about THPS. I had a friend in school who actually surfed and he bombed at school, so his father told him to give me some of his games until he got his grades back up. He had this and THUG 2. To avoid awkwardness, I loaned them for a week. Surfing never really was my kind of stuff, so I gave it back at the end of the week... and then sort of kept THUG 2 for a month.

They had us in the first half, not gonna lie. As far as it seems, the overall theme with those series is that they fail to bring out the interesting points of each sport, instead leaning on TH-like gameplay to fill the gap. Which can only take you so far.

Yeah the game has a weird blend between the more realistic carves and tube stuff, mixed with unrealistic arcadey ariels and reverts etc. to make the game work. I like it though, just a shame the game itself doesn't offer much.

I used to have this Pro Surfer THUG dual pack on GBA (basically a cartridge that had both games on it). I bought it because I obviously wanted THUG. I had no idea the GBA version came first. I remember playing this one level over and over again because I liked the background music. I just found out IGN has a video of game footage with that level which has only like 900 views

I really wanted this game as a kid and looks like I made a good move never getting it :D Amazing how impressionable I was as a kid. My thought process was basically "Tony Hawk Pro Skater is good, therefore xxxx yyyy's pro zzzz must also be good". I also got some weird games that I just don't know why I cared about, like Summer Heat Beach Volleyball. It was on a demo disc and I just bought it. I don't care about volleyball and I 100% completed that game anyway.

My only refrence for surfing is Surfs Up, both the Backyardigans episode and the 2007 animated movie, both featuring penguins. Also I once tried it in low LA waves during a thing years ago. By the way, perfect waves are found at Tiki Beach, not the Bermuda Triangle.

They just didn't put any effort into the actual campaign experience. There is no variety whatsoever, brutally forcing out the same goals for almost 30 levels. If they'd gotten that part right, this game could have been well on the way to a 6/10 imo.

This game is still fun to this day. It’s a shame there’s no good next gen surf games. I find it fun and challenging, the game was ahead of it’s time. I also find it easier to use the directional pad instead of the analog stick, more control that way 🏄‍♂️

I'm not sure what more variety you want from a surfing game, the sports relies on catchin a wave, surf it do tricks, survive and make sure the wave doesn't role you over and then go back behind the banks in the bay and wait for the next big one, slash it and cowabunga dude , each wave is unique. Maybe they should have lit up the difficulty so non surfers get frustrated. I think this is a game that is mostly specifically for surfers and people that understand surfing, are interested in surfing, and in extreme sports. I'm a skier and snowboarder myself, do all kinds of sports and surfing is a super nice alternative in the offseason, I mean summer.

Even without playing them myself, I always thought out of all the extreme sports games these surfing ones would be the most mediocre and repetitive. But you really got me going there in those first 6mins. I always wanted to pick this up myself. lol EDIT: Almost 4 years later, I actually picked this game up out of curiosity over the summer and I was actually very positively surprised. Sure, there are some odd physics problems on the wave, the camera can be tricky sometimes, and the game is much more limited than THPS for example due to the setting. But it does have a couple fun, unique mechanics like the tube tricks, and I actually give them big props for managing to have the different locations/waves feel different just through slightly different attributes. A beach having a shorter but much taller wave with a very aggressive tube section plays a lot different than a long but more shallow wave for example. I would have loved them do a sequel and iron out some kinks, honestly. But anyway, I still have to beat the brutal final stage, so I'm gonna go sink some more hours into that. lmao
