I love composing on the pyramid using the midi fx, and this device definitely looks like a step up. I expect that the weird low limit on patterns will be fixed, it is probably because the pattern screen can’t scroll yet. But if 8 patterns is not enough , you could not only think about using 2 tracks for 1 instrument, but also about using 2 projects that are very similar and switching between them. Not only does that give you 16 patterns instead of 8, it also gives you 2 master control tracks and 2 project keys. So tons of new creative options!

Great idea. I can live with the cons. True the Hapax doesn't have a sampler/synth like the Deluge, but neither have velocity sensitive pads. So if you really want to use the Hapax for synths, Ableton, and mix and match what gear your sequencing, like I'm aiming to do, this seems like a winner.

I instantly ordered a Hapax after the RMR video, sequencers are finally moving in the right direction, just need a hexagonal grid for isomorphic keyboards bc it makes them infinitely better than grids or even piano layout. And that's coming from a jazz pianist of 20 years and owner of 3 Elektron boxes, the perfect sequencer doesn't exist yet, but this is getting close.

This looks great. Lately I've come to realize my dream hardware sequencer would be a sequencer/mixer combo, with at least 8 inputs, external sends, and the ability to sequence the instruments and then bring them back in for effects+mixing. Much like the circuit tracks, mc707, octatrack, etc can do with 2-4 tracks , but with 8 inputs. Anything like that out there? Ideally it wouldn't even be a groovebox; I'd really just love these standalone sequencers to start adding audio inputs.

Hi thanks for the review. Interesting but at almost $1000.00 I would opt out and look into MPC which has more bang for the buck. MPC One has 128 midi tracks, with control voltage velocity and after touch,128 audio tracks using the computer, 8 in standalone mode, 128 pads velocity and pressure sensitive, touch screen. built in effects and instruments with automation and XY pad the options list goes on. Amazing device and it's less cost. Live runs on its own battery.

@ToyKeeper 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Hapax looks pretty nice but... I got my Akai Force brand new for less, and it's basically a whole Ableton-style DAW in hardware form. It's awfully hard to compete against Akai's current product line.
@MrRozzwell
@MrRozzwell 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with all the above but MPC range does not have midi effects. For example, in terms of randomisation, MPCs are extremely limited in comparison to the Hapax. It's depends what you are looking for. Since 2.10, drum programs have some degree of randomisation but it's still rather limited.
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrRozzwell Yes, if you want to program loops with randomization and trig conditions and other generative techniques, don't use an Akai device. That's not what they're built for. If you want to compose and play songs more traditionally, like play instruments and arrange clips into a song quickly or even real-time, that's where a Force or a DAW really shines. I tried for years to make songs on gear designed for the generative method, but never got along with it well. It always felt to me like the randomization and trig conditions and stuff were workarounds for not having the features I actually needed. It seemed like a way to make the most of limited resources. That's cool, but I found that the limitations didn't breed creativity; they mostly just made music feel like a chore. So I switched to an Ableton-style workflow, and suddenly was making better songs in a fraction as much time. I'm not trying to say one is better than the other though. The point is that it's important for each person to figure out what kind of tools work best for them. ... and the Hapax is great at what it does, but it's in kind of a specialized niche. So if someone is unsure whether they need it, the answer is probably no. The people who need it already know they need it. And for everyone else, there are other tools available which are probably a better fit.

When I watch these sequencer vids, they just strengthen my resolve that the Novation Tracks is nearly perfect and I need not look further. It’s not perfect but there is yet to be a major update and so it can only get more awesome. It’s genius? Simplicity - just the good stuff that matters:Velocity sensitivity, 8 control knobs, quick pattern/project creation, probability adjustment and oh ya, it has a groovy little drum machine built in and ample modulation for those drums.

I got mine recently (#8) and I agree with your assessment that it's very easy to get up and running with. A few notable omission in my opinion 1) lack of destructive rotate to step editing (Ala shift + arrow keys on an Elektron box) 2) inability to specify a gate length to a note in step, notably when you get sub-1 step lengths you're limited on divisors (1/2, 1/4) but I wouldn't mind a single step with a 75% gate length

I found the Deluge because I was looking for a grid-based sequencer. I wasn't necessarily looking for all of the other features. So I'm curious how this compares, not to the Deluge in it's entirety, but to just the Deluge's sequencer. Watching the workflow portion of this video twice, even with the screens, this doesn't necessarily seem easier where adjusting envelopes, and adding automation & effects are concerned. But I will say, being able to adjust velocity graphically on the drums is pretty awesome. That's exactly what I need to do for my current track, and I'm not looking forward to the tediousness of it
@ChumpyDumps
@ChumpyDumps 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had two Deluges and sold my second one for the Hapax. I didn’t care for the sound engine of the Deluge and the Hapax provided much more feedback for what I wanted. I’d say imputing notes is definitely easier on the Hapax. You can set up the lengths and velocities before putting the notes in and just press away. Big thing too is the ratchets which you have to do per step on the Deluge but it saves that info until you change it, or you can do it per step if that’s how you prefer. Obviously doing things like adjusting envelopes or reverb amounts was super easy in the deluge with the built in engine but it was more difficult when sequencing external gear. Now you can add instrument definitions and have all of that information saved for each of your synths, not sure if they ever added that to deluge, pretty sure they didn’t. And being able to see the automation curves is much easier and precise for editing than twisting the gold knobs and hoping you got it right. Deluge is a jack of all trades, master of none. It does a lot of things but it doesn’t really do anything better than any device dedicated for that task. It used to be the king of sequencers, 5 years ago, but now there’s some stiff competition in dedicated sequencers and it’s fallen behind. That said, it did lay the ground work for things like the Oxi One and Hapax.

@ChumpyDumps
@ChumpyDumps Жыл бұрын
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 yes, I’ve used quite a few of the modern sequencers out there including the Deluge for 5 years and the Hapax since launch. The Hapax can do everything the Delugr can do and more. It’s got 4x the midi channels which means you can control up to 64 midi devices with it as opposed to 16 on the deluge, and it’s got cool things like the midi envelope and LFOs which effectively expand how much modulation your synth has. Only have one LFO on your Minifreak? Well, now you can have 8 with the Hapax. Plus instrument definitions which allow you to easily automate CC parameters without having to always have the synths manual on hand. Hapax is definitely better at being a control hub for your studio.

@@ChumpyDumps thank you for your reply. I've watched so many videos on the matter. I have a Toraiz Squid, which is an incredible sequencer, however, Pioneer never supported. Hence, it has a number of bugs that were never corrected. I've read countless reviews on the Hapax. The most negative is not being able to note preview in the sequencer mode. Which I hope is corrected in an update. I just don't seem to understand how most people say the Deluge is more powerful sequencer compared to the Hapax which is nothing but a sequencer. I'm going to order it today. Our of curiosity, are there any other sequencers you find to be very good?

@@ErwinSchrodinger64 I am an elektron guy so I do love all the Elektron sequencer but it’s definitely more challenging to work with when it comes to polyphonic sounds / chords than a grid sequencer like Deluge or Hapax. I have the Polyend Tracker which is great but definitely an acquired taste. Ive owned MPC Live and Maschine+, both are great for their internal engines but I had lots of jitter issues working with external gear. I have an Oxi One currently but im going to sell it, for me it’s just a bit too limited especially since I already own the Hapax but I was curious about the Oxi One. It only allows for 4 midi CC parameters to be automated where im not sure the Hapax has a limit, if it does I haven’t reached it. It is a cool device if you need battery powered though. I have an OP-Z which is a lot of fun as well but it does have a smaller form factor and it has similar issues as the elektron sequencer when working with chords/ polyphony. I used to own an M8, really cool but also a tracker so an acquired taste. Big problem for me with that one was there wasn’t a performance element to it, like you can’t finger drum in notes without more equipment so it becomes a bit of a chore to program on it. I like to at least input notes by playing them in and then edit within a tracker and it wasn’t really possible with the M8 out of the box. But yeah, I have too much shit lol. The Deluge is great as a stand-alone groove box but it definitely has tons of limitations compared to newer boxes coming out. The only thing that it really beats the Hapax at is the arranger mode but even that only works best in the context of the all-in-one groovebox. The automation lanes and editing and midi Fx alone beat out the Deluge. And yeah, it’s not all sunshine and roses. I do hope they get a note preview working soon but it’s not the worst thing in the world. There’s also some workflow oddities like setting the note length, I think the Deluge and Oxi One do a better job at that. But Hapax is just really a beast and the closest obtainable thing to a Cirklon (which I haven’t tried)

Great review as usual. Really appreciate the methodical approach and the indexing so I can go back and review specific sections. The hardware sequencer market place is getting crowded all of a sudden and I feel that the Hapax has a top tier seat. It is also the first with MPE and I am willing to bet this will inspire other manufacturers to follow because if they do not support MPE they are missing an opportunity to allow artists a whole other avenue for artistic expression. Plus MPE is the current stage of midi evolution. Anyway I digress, your reviews help us to make intelligent purchase choices and refresh our minds when we acquire the item in question, thanks and keep up the great work we appreciate you.
@aqueous5099

I agree, this definitely inspires the market, and I’m glad it doesn’t have too much overlap with the deluge, as this excels in the live morphing and controlling of outboard gear. The deluge also records mpe information, but the effects on the hapax are next level. If I didn’t already have samplers on hand, I wouldn’t know which to get. The deluge is more mature in various areas-even sequencing-but Squarp is a promising company with precedent.

Hi Loopop! Great review. Again! The only major thing with Hapax, from my pov, is that I am looking at it as the center for my modular grid (pun intended), and only 4 CV/gate pairs, even disregarding other modulation cvs we might want to use, is a bit lacklustre, no? I mean, we might always add a mutant brain of sorts, to get some notes and CV out of the midi tracks, but I think that Hapax should have a lot more CV/gat/modcv outs. Especially for the price. Comparing even with arturias keystep , hosts a lot more CV options (not to mention all the independent drum gate outs...). I hope they release some sort of interface eurorack module that one can use via it's USB connection or even midi to expand Hapax for more tracks. I mean, 16 tracks but then, 4cv/gate pairs... Do you have any workaround ? Endorphines also has the shuttle Control (?) The one with 16 cvs from one midi, but that's an extra 400 EUR.. Hapax has a lot of power but bottlenecked on the CV interface. I am looking to get one anyway... But damn...

Just get an FH-2 and you will have up to 64 cv/gates in your modular. The upside is: Say you play live with Hapax and modular and you use an FH-2 or similar midi-to-cv. All you need to connect is one usb cable. If you had say 24 jack cables coming out of Hapax, that would be more stuff to manage. I think Squarp made a fine choice.

But of course it should support more tracks (maybe for USB midi hubs later). - Only 8 rows for the session view. Seriously? Why I can’t create a long list of rows and scroll them up and down (like in Push). - 32 bars per clip. So I can’t create a long background clip? Why these software restrictions? I'm looking for a good sequencer, that cost about 1k or less. I really like this, but they're on back order. I have limited patience. I'm stuck right now. I like the Pyramid, Torso, Engine, Octatrak, NDLR, and I'm probably missing some. I'm okay with used in excellent or mint condition. It seems that the chip shortage has caused a lot of smaller companies to end up having limited supply. I'm also in the market for a midi router, and the one I want seems to have a limited supply. I digress.. I think the Pyramid is going to be the one I get. I already own a Beatstep Pro, but I want something that goes deeper.. pause.. haha. I was looking at the Polyend Play, and plan on getting one, but from what I gathered, I don't think it can sequence in the same way that the others do. I may be wrong. The Polyend Seq is also interesting, but I'm not sure if it's comparable to the other sequencers. I want something that's easy, fun, intuitive, and fairly limitless within reason. I would greatly appreciate anyone's feedback. Just to be clear, I'm going to be running this with a midi/usb router into hardware and software.

In piano roll view can you scroll a step at a time? or less than a page at a time? One of the things that drives me crazy about the deluge is that it does not allow this, or at least I don't know how to do this. So if you are trying to write a melody that is longer than one page, you lose all context/bearing/orientation when you go to the next page. Zooming in and out to try to accomplish this is a mind warp and takes way too much cognitive load.

You had to hold one down to do quick-track selection, but the pad wouldn't hold down, or would trigger the other one, then you'd press the step button and instead of picking a track, you'd mess up a pattern or play a wrong note live or something. Can't recall exactly as it was a while ago, but 100% bothered me as a more live-performance focused electronic musician. I may be misremembering the functions, but that was the experience generally.

i am wondering about the 4x cv outputs, which they advertised with 16bit depth. from what i see everything seems to run on midi; how can one take adavantage of the extra resolution on these? or is it just the dac that interpolates? also i would have hoped for a non dented encoders just; since they removed the trackpad as well there is no way to record non-dented.

Interesting question. I think midi can be higher res than 128 with some clever math chicanery... can't remember what it's called, midiplus or something. I think the pyramid supported this. Don't think it's 16 bit though. Honestly, I would get pams pro workout for euro modulation and use the hapax cv for melodies. I guess some extra cv modulation can't hurt but Hapax LFOs will never compete with pams.

It seems to me one of the most live jamming oriented sequencer on the market today. 2 projects structure with seamless transition, easy pattern launching structure, 8 assignable knobs per track... I can see playing with it without even touching the synths, and with a bunch of pre-assembled projects on the sd card you can flow music for hours

@@CiabaMusic hm idk maybe we have a different understanding what playing live is, but for me playing live mostly means to actually play the melodies live and not to take pre-made patterns and just twist some parameters at the synth. The 2 project feature has its charm, I'll admit that, but also that's what I meant with its basically just a computer. I don't even mean that in a downplaying way, I often jam just with my computer and a midi keyboard which works really well, I just don't really see how this sequencer can enhance that esperience.
