None of this “Been sitting for 42 years, will it start?” Clickbait. A conscientious, thorough check of critical fluid levels to ensure that there is adequate coolant and lubrication to ensure that systems are not damaged during operation. What could be more relaxing on a Sunday morning than watching cold 90W gear oil draining from a transmission case JUST slightly older than I am…..

That's a very nice Super W-4. It runs very nice. Someone put an 8V battery in it I see. 2 grease points that are very important are the ones on the rear axles. I grease them heavily. We have had lots of the standard tractors, and W-4s rarely get water in the rear end. W-6s are the worst for that. W-4s and 9 series tractors, the gear shift is under the fuel tanks, but W-6s are exposed. Well done on the video!

I got a Bronco swamped with water lo many years ago. A car mechanic (former NASA engineer of all things) said to replace the fluid with diesel and move it a bit. Worked a charm, one gear oil change for the Transfer case , trany and rear pumpkin and it was good. Key was Diesel has some lubricity (added now) and as long as low strain, enough lubrication and no idea why but it flushed out on one change.

For flushing milky oil I found from others to help get rid of the remnants of the milkshake is a 50//50 mix of gear oil & diesel. Run only for a few minutes then drain. The diesel will help wash away any residue while being just enough of a lube itself to prevent damage. Drain & drip away for awhile. By the time it stops dripping you're good. Refill with oil of your choice. Did this on my 63 Massey Ferguson 101 (Industrial version of the TO35) after sitting out & found I had shake in the case. Since then whenever checking the dip stick...still got 80W90 & nothing else on it.

The grabby clutch syndrome is familiar. When I was a teenager, we had a couple tractors that would sit idle all winter. At first startup in the spring, I would do a high gear takeoff to clean the rust out of the clutch. After that, I would check adjustment and that clutch would engage as smooth as butter.

Toby, you missed the plug on the distributor. IH distributors take grease and have a relief hole drilled into the housing opposite the from the plug so it can't be over greased as the excess grease will come out that hole. About 1 pump is all it needs. Delco distributors have the same plug, but no relief hole because the plug is supposed to be oiled for the oil lite bushing Delco uses on the shaft. Looks like a great tractor.
@SalisburySnake8 ай бұрын
I was going to mention the distributor shaft grease point too. The reason for the slotted plugs is to prevent a less knowledgeable operator from greasing them daily along with the other points. They're only supposed to be greased about once per year. Same reason for the caps on the water pump zerks.

What a standup little tractor! I really don't like 8 volt batteries. 6 volt stuff works great and starts well once you get them to charge. (those converted to 12 volts work great too). Think of the stories it has to tell. I have a 53 Super C which I got from the original owner (thru his son) 5 or 6 years ago and the guy was 100 years old. And he was a young man to be buying a new tractor in 1953. Most of the farmers buying new letter series tractors were one or two generations older than the WW2 veterans who are now 100+ years old. These old tractors saw a lot.

I'd have to agree about the water seep into the gear case. Depressed bolt areas are notorious for that unless they have some sort of sealer that the bolt goes through. For the amount of oil contamination in the gear case. I'd about think it's a combo of seep and not running long enough to get hot to get moisture out but that's just me. Either way it would still be a change item on the list for before storage at the very least. If not a change, run/work till hot. Change again to make sure residual moisture is driven out and get a good oil coating on the gears, bearings and such. After that storge under a cover, preferably in a enclosed building if possible. Next would be under a carport like cover. If none of that is available, two tarps, one poly over a waxed cloth tarp.

I don’t know if someone answered the question to why they have a plug on the distributor grease point over a permanent zerk, it was to prevent over greasing. It’s the same reason there’s caps on the zerks on the water pump.
