Well, Dingaling, the creator of these games, was asked once who he thinks is the worst character in the LISA games, and he answered Lisa. Many people have tried to convey the idea that by "worst" he meant underdeveloped, or just bland, but to the same question he was answering another one: which was his least favorite character, which he answered it was Buddy. So by "worst" he must have meant as in evil, or unscrupulous, and yeah, it was kind of a shocker for me too. Why not fucking Marty, or Yado, or hell, even Buzzo? I mean, those guys are pretty FUBAR, far worse than whatever Lisa could have done. But she had a hand in fucking up Buzzo, thus fucking up Brad, thus fucking up Buddy, and sure, Lisa is an abuse victim, but she's not a good person. She's manipulative, resentful, and judging by the way he made Buzzo treat an animal, violent, and a potential psychopath. It's really hard to see her as anything other than a poor victim, but she's not. She drove Buzzo to madness, and in that madness he ruined Dusty's face on a fit of anger towards Brad, then helped Yado ruin the world because fuck it, why not, and then fueled Brad's addiction to Joy so as to enslave him as a mutant, all the while making him suffer over a senseless revenge. And he kept seeing her in his trips on Joy, driving the addiction that would kill him in the end. All he had to do to realize that Brad was actually a good person, was to let go of Lisa. All Brad had to do to let Buddy go (a thing that he couldn't do not even by killing Marty, the face of his abuse, his guilt, and addiction), was to let go of Lisa. To me, Marty is still the true villain, given that if he weren't the piece of shit he was to his daughter, maybe she wouldn't have drove Buzzo insane, Brad wouldn't need drugs to cope with the guilt, and Yado wouldn't have been able to distribute Joy so easely on post apocaliptic Olathe. Hell, without Buzzo's help, maybe he wouldn't have been able to even develop Joy in the first place. But Marty lived on, and he found a way to redeem himself. He saved Buddy. And in the end, if he's to be believed, he didn't forgave himself for what he did to Lisa. But Lisa didn't got a chance to fix what was broken, instead leaving the pieces to be picked up after all the damage was done, and in the making. Buzzo blamed Brad and wanted revenge. Brad blamed himself and wanted to numb his guilt. Brad wanted to protect Buddy the way he couldn't Lisa, and Buddy hated him for it. They are all broken, and looking for second chances to make things right. And thus, Lisa's death is in the center of all their suffering.

It does kind of surprise me too, but I suppose the point of it was to show that abuse victims are just as capable of reproducing the damage done to them. Lisa obviously couldn’t foresee the numerous consequences her actions would have, but the pain she caused that she knowingly facilitated is undeniable. It shows that even the most vulnerable can turn into ruthless monsters if they don’t keep themselves in check.

Amazing comment. This video series had me up to 4AM so ye im intrigued. Its a horrible story which one can compare to the infamous Emergence (Metamorphosis) with all the themes of depression and family, rape, and incest. Really dont like reading or viewing this types of things in one way. It makes me uncomfortable knowing such horrible things actually happen in the world and that people have to suffer these things. But either way its amazingly written and very good to see art being able to dive so deep into dark thoughts. I feel like thinging dark things and exploring those emotions is better than locking them away. As to not bottle up on impulses and shame. True self control is letting go. But yes thank you for this and thanks to the amazing creator @squatch Gaming Official for this and the hotline series. This is the first time ive found myself very fond of analysis of video game art. Realistically, I don't think that Buddy was Brad's second chance. I think it was Dusty. Since he adopted dusty, but then disliked him for some reason. I think why he disliked him was, not because he actually disliked dusty, but rather what happened to him. Dusty's face being mutilated, to me, meant that Brad had failed yet again. That he had let someone else down again, and now Dusty had to permanently face that- and Brad would have to deal with that whenever he would look at the face of Dusty, which is why he had to cast Dusty out, and never remember him- even though he probably still loved him, and dusty did as well, he just couldn't cope with looking at Dusty's face anymore, and what it reminded him of.

I know a lot of people kinda hate Buddy, but to me, the ending where she chooses to take the vaccine, give birth to a child, and mourn her friends and family with mutant Brad, is what redeems her. Brad had good intentions, but his actions negatively affected his daughter. But after she loses her brother, goes through everything that scarred her, finally forgives her father, and gives humanity a second chance, showing the plants growing back, with her baby and Brad enjoying everything, whist mourning Buzzo and Dusty, this, to me, gives her some redemption.

I'd also like to get your feedback on how you think the series (the Painful and Joyful summaries in particular) has gone as a whole. I feel they've focused more on re-telling the story so explaining the behind the scenes stuff has kinda taken a back seat as a result. I think they turned out that way because I wanted to tell the story as it's told by the game, and summarize stuff along the way (it's why the ends of the part's have those like "recap" moments where the character reflects on what's happened in the part). Do you like the story telling focus, or would you rather I just focus on the facts and explain what happens and why in future summaries? Any insight or input you have to offer would help me improve further which I'm always eager to do! Also, thank you so much for watching the video, and reading this (if you did)! Ever since I first saw gameplay of The Painful, I thought "Oh the girl is Lisa? No, the girl's name is Buddy. Then who's Lisa?" and did not get an answer for a while. Even then, after the seeing the story of The First, I wondered why Painful and Joyful were both under the main name of Lisa. But now I get it, Lisa (particularly her death) was the main thing that caused everything in the story to happen, all of the driving forces of the story came about from Lisa. She's the reason for Brad's obsession with keeping Buddy safe and therefore the reason for Buddy's obsession with being the strongest and not being controlled. She's the reason for Buzzo torturing Brad. I can appreciate good naming, whether it's characters with clever names, or tracks in a soundtrack named well. The name of this series is perfect. At first it doesn't mean much, it's the name of the character in the first game that is just about nowhere to be seen in the other two other than in the main menu. But it's given so much more context by the end of The Joyful, it just fits so well in the overall story and the greater meaning behind the name being revealed little by little is astounding.

@shawnbay22115 жыл бұрын
In Painful, flowers are a symbol of beauty and purity. Buzzo is left with one on his grave. Mutated Rando has one in the subconscious of Buddy. And Brad is covered in them. Maybe Buddy has come to know she isn’t a good person, finding those people she resents before to slowly appear differently than what she would think. She even acknowledges her father’s hatred for himself, and maybe this means deep down she holds a conscience that we don’t see of Buddy. In the end with the newborn child, I like to think in a head cannon [from my strong dislike of Buddy] that her child(ren) will grow to resent their own mother and holds a belief that goes against Buddy’s. That child would witness a mother of addiction, (most likely) withdrawal of truth their whole life, and genocide. Due to loneliness and feelings of abuse, this child will mirror the same dynamic of Marty and Lisa. And in the end I see Buddy realise she reflects what she sees in her own father in her, a monster. Hence this becomes a cycle of abuse.

Hmm... If Lisa was that psychopathically horrible by herself even without being an Abuse victim, then, What of Lisa's and Brad's mother? Is she the one who Lisa took many features from? Since the game clearly shows that Lisa would have been a psycho even without the influence of Marty, since Abuse victims aren't so open to doing such horrible things to other beings (Such in the case of Buzzo, and the captured and tortured animal) which also had a domino effect of creating both the strongest and most hurt people in the Olathe waste land (Them being Brad, Buzzo, Dusty and of course Buddy) 1.Brad:Well for Obvious reasons, for one, she was disappointed in him for not being there for her when Marty did his shtick... And for the second thing, him possibly partaking in doing he same thing as his father while being in a drunken state because of Marty 2.Buzzo:Also obvious, with the way she manipulated him by being in the situation that she was in and making him both mentally and literally get wrapped around her fingers... From the point where she made him mutilate the animal, and then her and then even poor Dusty after her commiting suicide because her mutilation didn't make Marty leave her alone.. Which drove him to internalized insanity which lead to him working with Yado and creating the joy pill that he would use to torture Brad with. But would never forget the mental torture and manipulation he had to go through even after making Brad a representation of his Id/Joy mutant form that he kept as a memory of "Victory" for Lisa 3.Dusty:He was more of a side effect/aftermath of Buzzo's insanity (because of Lisa) which lead to his face to be ripped apart by Buzzo because he was viewed as Brad's son, but he seemed to be the least affected by the tragedy and somehow got over it by picking up the persona of Rando and making himself look menacing and unbreakable 4.Buddy:She is literally the byproduct of Yattos madness, Marty's horribleness, Lisa's psychopathy, and Brad's drug abuse. And she managed to get mingled into the Armstrong's by non other than Buzzo, Lisa's personal puppet himself, who begged Yatto to give Buddy to Brad, who teached her survival skills against other humans, but made her feel caged and forced because of his drunken stupper (He had because of Lisa and Marty) and his joy abuse, which made her to have a need of a supremacy complex for her to never feel caged ever again, neither by Brad, Brad's Son Dusty, or her own Father Yado... Or TL:DR You can either blame most of the things happening because of Lisa herself, or because of Marty (and probably Brad) abusing her

I don't think it was implied that Brad was complicit in what happened to Lisa. If he were an independent adult, that would be different. I especially didn't see it implied that he had sex with Lisa, though that is the kind of twisted story this game's creator would come up with.

I really liked your presentation. You clearly were touched by the game as we all were. I'm glad somebody recounted the whole thing so I could see the different choices/endings relative to everything going on without having to replay it multiple times. So, just wondering, I presume Dr. Yado was not lying and was actually Buddy's biological father (although Buzzo says otherwise to completely break the young, impressionable Buddy's ties to a very disgraceful, deranged man). You also find in his joy compound (in Lisa the Painful) the only other woman in the game. Is that Buddy's mother? Also, the woman suspiciously looks like that elongated joy mutant that first confronts Buddy and kills the "Golden Opportunist" later. Did she become that mutant? Did Brad incorrectly assume she was dead when she was really just in a deep Joy coma?
@SquatchGamingChannel6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Jonathan! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed so much! :) It's heavily implied (but not confirmed, I don't think) that the woman in the Joy Lab was Yado's "Wife" and therefore Buddy's mother. I had the same thoughts myself, but that woman is not Sweetheart. Dingaling (the developer) confirmed as much himself.

Having watched the story to these games, which people have hailed as some incredible triumph, I must confess that I'm left bewildered and wondering why. It's not that it's too disturbing, bizarre, cruel, or futile, but for me it's how exaggerated it all is. Essentially, within just this small area, hundreds of peoples' lives are ruined and ended because of events surrounding seven people; Marty, Brad, Lisa, Buzzo, Dusty, Yado, and Buddy. If Yado is behind the apocalypse, that would make the reach truly ridiculous. Honestly, the game would have had far more punch if the scale was pulled back dramatically, as it'd be more believable and relatable. "Gee, the world has ended, and here I am, a washed-up loser trying to raise an adoptive child, but because of my own traumas I'm doing a bad job of it and harming them too. Crap, this drug I'm taking is turning me into a disfigured monster, but only after warping my psyche so much that it exacerbates that abuse ironically as I'm driven to protect them." The nature of the drug is so specific, including its timing (he took it for years after all) that it reeks of plot contrivance, especially since there's an antidote! Wouldn't holding that over everyone else's head, demanding compliance and property in exchange for this panacea be a much better plan than ruling over mindless, shapeless globs of flesh? I get that he's crazy, but this is just stupid. I'd say a similar problem arises with how Buzzo would have agreed to help him along with this, with nothing to gain from it, instead of murdering someone who harms his own wife and daughter (considering how much he despises Brad, this is very confusing). Plus, it's never explained how this apocalypse took place such that it destroyed all women without killing all men, while also setting all of society back significantly. These huge plot points warrant some explanation. Regardless, I think the game would have worked better if Yado had distributed his pills amongst the community he lived in, using them as a scale test site in real-world conditions, perhaps pulling some strings here and there to manipulate people, stress them out, see different tolerance levels, watch people decay into monsters, let them run amok before the police would stop them, and record the results with apathetic but scientific glee. With everything under his control and going according to his plans he'd go on a power trip, thinking he could unrealistically take this to larger and larger scales, before it'd spiral out of his control and turn against him. Since the story never gives any explanation for it, I fail to see how he'd control any of these demented creatures after they mutated, with how unpredictable and violent they become, seemingly driven by specific desires and triggers. I could see him orchestrating a move to turn several people into mutants at once, considering the possibilities on a national level, before he's swept up in a bloodbath. That would have been a very horrific, brutal, yet grimly satisfying scene. After all, these innocent and suffering people have lost all humanity, theoretically irreversibly, but even without knowing what they're doing they're getting vengeance on the mad puppeteer who made them that way. A much better demise than what we got here. With this as part of the background to what took place with the other important characters, their events and the consequences of them would still be pretty large (small town scale), but to a much less unreasonable level. Also, more of the blame would fall to Yado, whereas here the women-crazy and violent men are more culpable, though oddly most of it falls onto Marty and Lisa. The choices of the abuser and his victim have so unwieldy an impact it's hard to take seriously, which somewhat makes light of what took place. Abusing a child and the natural results that spawn from such depravity makes for an uncomfortable, upsetting feeling. When it leads to the fall of civilization as we know it? It seems pretty dumb, and that's what I take from these games. It's overblown, contrived, and seems to be designed specifically to be manipulative by pumping it full of as much cruelty and tragedy as possible.
@cjcathead24684 жыл бұрын
I think part of the problems is that this is actually just a fan game made canon, which brings a huge number of issues to the main story. It doesn't help that this game does feel kind of like an anime in how it deals with things. The main game didn't explain the world building that much but I thought that it was just because it wasn't focused on those things. It was more about the story about Brad trying to find Buddy and bring her home with the characters and comedy juxtaposition with all the fucked up things in this world being more of the focus (Although mostly the comedy). If I were to explain it would be sort of like how in some zombie media it doesn't explain everything about what caused the zombie apocalypse because it's more about the characters than the virus.

Buzzo could be a nickname for buzz saw or buzz cut. Buzzo knew and liked Lisa (meaning he should be the same age as Rando, and Lisa). I think it's him pre-nickname sawing the paw off the cat in preparation to do that to Lisa. Lisa then takes her life before he can work up the courage. Dustin/Rando was the test subject for him. After Lisa is gone, he works with Yado (remember that someone says "My name is Buzzo." to Yado in that scene). He finds Yado's plans to be crazy (take over the world with an addictive drug that turns people into single minded lunatics?)...yeah. The White Flash happens. Yado's plans go into overdrive. Buzzo knows about Joy, but in a world where fighting for your life is routine, it probably helps to take Joy (it heals your body and blanks out PTSD). He takes it, and becomes single minded enough to torment Brad over his "failure" to help Lisa. Explains why he keeps warning Buddy not to take Joy (at the end of it) and why he deliberately overdosed Brad during that confrontation.

I think it's Marty. It's his abuse that led to Brad abandoning his sister, Lisa committing suicide, which led to Buzzo and Brads fierce rivalry, which led to the events of Lisa the Painful and Lisa the Joyful. Marty may have changed, but it doesn't excuse his actions, and what it lead to, and what it did to Lisa, Brad, Buzzo, Buddy, Dusty, and practically every character. And personally, I think the ending where Buddy chooses the vaccine, gives birth to a child, and mourns with the mutant Brad over Buzzo and Dustys death, it's her way if redeeming herself. She rejects being the ruler, and becoming a monster, and gives humanity another chance, where Buddy respects her brothers wish for peace.
