Great video for managing expectations (and time) around foam rolling. Thanks for removing the guilt I was feeling over not spending several minutes at a time on trouble spots!

And it's so exhausting for some zones like when you use it behind the legs and you must stand on your hands especially..my shoulders omg...painfull So good news 😎

I started foam rolling for about 5 minutes before my workouts and it's been great! Haven't had shoulder pain since I got in the habit! Great video guys!

I like to use foam rolling in combination with static stretching. Of Course as you mentioned dynamic stretching before a workout is definitely recommended by me to my clients. I like to think of foam rolling as a bandaid but when used in combination with activating under active muscles it can have long term benefits.

Yay! Thanks for this. I really don't like how foam rolling feels after the minute mark anyway. This just validated me so much 💕😂

I've tried foamrolling at night, especially the back, and I've realized that it actually keeps me awake! The activation is actually quite extreme. Takes me 1-2 hours to just fall asleep, where I usually only need about 30min or so.

Wow I never knew it had a name or was medically studied, but I guess its D.O.M.S. ive been dealing with lately. Actually, I think ive dealt with this for years but recently changed up my exercise routine and its much worse now... I deal with the phenomena of most muscle soreness onset 2 even 3 days after a workout, especially after leg days, and no one ive asked really knows what Im talking about. It really screws with a weekly workout routine. Its nice to put a name to it so I can do more of my own research! Ive never really incorporated foam rolling into my stretching regimen. I naively thought it was more gimmick and time waste over regular stretching. Anything I can do to minimize this problem and hit the gym more frequently! Thank you for the information Dr Aaron and Graham!

I think the results are due to increased awareness in the brain to that area of the body, I feel most people use to much pressure. I can get as much benefit from using a dry scrub brush and just stimulate the skin receptors.

I use rolling in areas I've found knots in my calf where I'd otherwise feel discomfort. Short of removing these knots, rolling helps.

At the end you recommend a cross fiber release. I’m a massage therapist and do cross fiber friction and get results that last longer than 5-10 min of increased range of motion. I’m curious why it wouldn’t be the same, like when someone uses a Gua sha tool, it’s presumably lighter than a foam roller for the most part.

So would you get added benefits if you foamroll + warm up in that 10-30 min window? Is there studies on that available?

It takes at least 2-3 min of pressure and breathing for my hip flexors and adductors to start to relax. Are you saying it should only take up to 1 min? If so, what might be wrong with me that it takes so long? 😅
@nozomikoji1533
@nozomikoji1533 Жыл бұрын
Maybe it's not really the adductors the problem. I say that cause I realised that I take a long time when I farmroll this area to find the good position cause I unvoluntary contract all my body at first and only after a moment I begin to relax. And it's a this time that my adductors start to work really.

Some makers of foam rollers claim foam rollers can effect myofascial release. Is there any scientific basis for this claim?
@stephentomaszewski8501
@stephentomaszewski8501 Жыл бұрын
There’s already videos on it. Science says it doesn’t help. It would reduce the tenderness of the area and allow you to possible stretch further but stretch is how you release the knots. Also foam rolling is in the wrong plane so you’re not stretching the myofascial but just compressing it.
@snakeace0
@snakeace0 Жыл бұрын
@@stephentomaszewski8501 Thats not true. When you knead some dough for bread, you stretch it by compressing it against the table. Same thing happens in the fascia. A "stretch" through compression. Foam Rollers only work because of myofascial release, thats not even a debate.
