Thanks Lloyd , yes they can be very destructive finding a home in people addicts so this has worked out great so far. They like the wooden tree house and they stay away from mine :)

Squirrels are definitely a hardy, intelligent creature. They have to be feisty in order to survive - we also have bird feeders and squirrels are welcome as well - as you said why fight nature? Building them a home is something I’ve not thought of doing - one day I may ask for blueprints and apply for a permit lol

Great ideas Steve! Loved all your ideas for feeders and this is the first time I have heard of a squirrel house - now I need one! We are just north of Barrie and I think the squirrel house would be nice up here as well. I also loved the idea of mixing the corn/sunflower seeds. We used to buy premix at TSC (now Peavymart). Nice having two steel cans. We have one in the garage for peanuts in the shell for hand feeding the squirrels and chipmunks and one in the shed for the premix bird feeder stuff. Our feeder is squirrel proof as well (a plasma torch made a nice large disk of steel mounted below the feeder). Loved the vide, keep them coming!

Thanks Steve these are like pets now and so friendly but it takes a long time to gain their trust. No strange squirrels around my yard with these little pit bulls guarding the perimeter . LOL

How's she goin'? I'm glad your squirrel house is working out for you. I have red squirrels and if you give them an inch they'll take a mile. No way would there only be 2 squirrels in that house. Mike you build it and they will come and defend you property like a barb wire fence. They can be destructive little buggers but with some help they can be quite friendly and nice to have around too.

We don't have the black ones here, I never even saw one until I went to Ontario. That's awesome that they have a nice little house and are obviously very well fed lol. My squirrel buddy lives in the planter/bench thing I built a few years ago. He's pretty well fed also. I know what you mean when you say they're territorial, I've seen my guy chase two other squirrels away last summer. I wonder how well they keep other rodents away? I've never seen a mouse near our place but our neighbor has. The squirrel and my cat Gromit seem to have come to an agreement. The squirrel will try to avoid Gromit and Gromit will keep trying to kill the squirrel. He got one a few summers ago and I had to readjust his leash so he still has lots of room to play in the yard, but he can't get within four feet of where the squirrel lives and the bird feeder. I always enjoy a good squirrel video.

My dad struggled for many years to keep the birds because he loved them in the yard and the squirrels used to eat all the bird food and make a mess and it was terrible so in the end the squirrels met their demise🪓🔪🕳

Little stinkers are trying to overwinter in hubby's pro v lund again, did some nasty damage, livewell wires chewed, speaker wires and chewed hole right into a corner when other access closed off. They like the shed too. I put a duck box on its side last fall hoping it would nest in there instead of on my rolled items hanging off the truss but nope. I wasn't sure if they would nest in a box that size in winter in nw Ontario but this gives me hope but..where is the how to build?

I found it a lot better with a nesting box for one family instead of having many around as they do a great job at protecting their territory. Well worth the effort when they start doing damage. 👍

I live in the middle of a large city. I have a hollow tree in my front yard that has birthed many generations of squirrels. I put out food, of course to help get them through the winter. One day I saw the matriarch with a wad of grocery sack paper heading for the tree. Since then, I rip up a couple of sacks and put it in a designated spot. She comes by and empties it about every other day.

Good question , well it seems you don't need too as I've observed the squirrels seem to remove everything inside each season so I have never had to clean it out.
