Agree. The low rumbling sound effects and occasional cinematic grinding sound really did it for me. High speeds where riveting. For some reason i get SW trench run feel from this, protecting those Y-wings. Red-5 anyone?

During the 90's I played EA/Janes ATF (Advanced tactical Fighter) and one of the missions in a campaign was to defend an Aurora spyplane that had engine failure. It was really great! You had to engage the fighters but also keep an eye on any threath to the spyplane.

How a Tomcat chased down a MiG-31 I'll never know.
@heathb4319 Жыл бұрын
The Mig can only do short burst of top speed or it will destroy the engines. The Tomcat can run wide open till his fuel is gone. He also has the Aim 54 Pheonix which can reach way out there and run them down annnnnd he doesn't have to run them down...just head them off and distract them from a different vector.
@Tapochek6996 Жыл бұрын
@@heathb4319Speeds at which engine damage occurs are ~3000 km/h. Cruise speed of Mig-31 is 2500, at which it can fly as long as the fuel allows
@2ZZGE100 Жыл бұрын
Short answer. Altitude. Engines and airframes perform differently across altitudes and IMN. It all depends on what their objective is. MIG-25 needs high altitude and thin air to go fast up to Mach 2.8 while Tomcat was faster in low altitudes. Mach 2.5+ test was performed only at 50,000 feet in the 70s. This was a real world tactic Tomcat pilots pulled against MIG-25s during hte 80s in confrontations against MIG-25. Drag them down into thick/dense air. Keeping them engaged in thick air and F-14s were able to chase the MIG-25s. There is even an actual HUD video of LT Cmd. Bucci's F-14 locked on a MIG-25 in full afterburner chasing it in thick/dense air. The MIG-25 trying to out-maneuver and F-14 easily keeping the lock on while trying to get clearance to shoot, but was not authorized. The MIG-25 needs to climb very high to escape. Tomcat does not fly at 80,000 feet in very thin air. It was in thick air where Tomcat's engines have much better performance and can go faster in thick air because of how the engines were tuned. Also, F-14 is like an arrow with the wings swept back with a very small cross section so it has much less drag in thick/dense air (It can go Mach 1.3 at only 50 feet).

@Danlovestrivium Жыл бұрын
As pointed out in the beginning of the video, the SR-71 was experiencing engine problems which made the possibility of intercept by the MiGs a more likely scenario for the sake of this exercise. The engine troubles of the SR-71were what was feeding the urgency of the F-14 in this video.

Anytime i see the Blackbird; I always think of how it's the only plane that existed whose defense mechanism is not chaff, not flare, not some fancy ecm systems; but to simply turn the afterburners on.
@Danlovestrivium Жыл бұрын
Back in the early days of the F-117, it didn't even have an RWR system. Pilots literally used to fly oblivious as to whether they were being tracked or not. THAT is crazy to think about these days, similar to what you're pointing out about the SR-71's lack of countermeasures.

This was crazy- Blackbirds and Foxhounds running around at Mach 3 going for it, and a Tomcat gets into the high speed fight That last guy was a fool and didnt play to his strengths, as hit and run attacks at those top class speeds are how the Fox interceptors are sopowerful, not turning with a tomcat LOL I Hope we get more Mach 2 - 3 fights and scenarios! Frankly, if I had to try to save ablackbird with bats or hounds doing Mach 3, I'd want to be in a Raptor or Eagle, they have the best speeds to try to intervene and get weapons release with a boost to a AAM's speed. We need MOAR! / you know its a good day if blackbirds are involved and everyone 's sonic booming all over the place
