Great start to the new year? You be the judge. Kinda bummed since it complicates things, but I'm pretty stoked on the new plan. Hope you guys had a great 2017 - lets make 2018 even better!

Adam LZ, If you're going to do all that to the engine, I'd get the machine shop to order new matched pistons to go in it also.. I wouldn't take a chance with pistons that have been allowing oil to pass, and the one that was worked so hard with a broke ring on it.. And i know the rings are to keep the oil from passing, but every piston had oil on them, so something wasn't right with those pistons and rings in that block.. But that's just me..
@CL-rm6sb
@CL-rm6sb 6 жыл бұрын
He's basically boring out the block, old pistons won't be reused.
@calvinh.8882
@calvinh.8882 6 жыл бұрын
He said he was going to have it sleeved.. And a lot of people will have a blocked sleeved and use the same old pistons.. And i have had many blocks sleeved and bored up to 60 over, and i have had issues using older pistons in a couple of them, and from then on i had the machine shop order me new pistons to mach the exactly to the work they did.. If just one of the pistons is just a fraction off, it can cause issues in a short amount of time.. If your just using the car for just regular old daily driver them being off a little isn't really an issue, But if you're going to use an engine the way Adam does, it's best to be safe than sorry..

Those plugs tell the whole story. Too much ignition timing and or not enough fuel. They're WHITE. They should be a toasty brown with no specs. Look what happened to the tops of your cylinders. Pretty self explanatory. That didn't happen because of water. It melted because it got too hot. For a drag car, a tune like that might be acceptable but definitely not for what you're doing. And yes, an oil cooler is a no brainer. Bad gas wouldn't keep your plugs looking white like that. Have someone else tune it. Kings is a great shop and just down the road. Don't forget we have Mazworx (your best route to get an SR proper), Real street, and Titan. Now you don't have to rely on Martin with the addition of the power fc which is a great move. I have a request. Can you weigh your car with the Sr and cage, then Nicoles car with the jz. Maybe on some corner scales to show the balance of the two. @nicetime_racing
@srfrjz3
@srfrjz3 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Fortier totally irrelevant to the situation and what I was pointing out. I don't want anyone to get confused. Also, the issue with the broken ring and exhaust leak is why you would fall out of boost. That's a given though. Your tune was the culprit. This next go around with the sleeves punched out and power fc will be a blessing along with a turbo that won't blow hot air. You should consider an e85 setup.
@RanchOwnzU
@RanchOwnzU 6 жыл бұрын
thanks for the info lol. I should stop replacing my spark plugs irregularly so I can actually monitor my A/F since my MHD will only do bank 1. My 335i might be having this problem on a stage 1 91 ACN tune. Sucks, but the borescope kinda told the story anyway. I agree with the ignition timing or lack of fuel, but LZ should kinda have known this anyway because the most basic of N54 tunes extract power from ignition timing, only a custom tune or JB4 will really get extra power from increasing boost pressure, so there are a lot of people with the BMW (more on the N55 side) having these same issues with fuel delivery or ignition lean detonation. Should have seen it mentioned more than a few times, with the whole port injection episode. Anyway, I hope Adam gets his fuel delivery sorted, adds meth injection, and makes sure that he doesn't pull a rodknock by sloshing oil to one side of the pan when it's sideways so the engine is insufficiently cooled. Good luck

rb's are bigger than jz's, weight more, make less torque, and 6cyl sit too far forward in s13. they're also harder to find parts for if u don't live in Australia/New Zealand/Japan. for Adam's goals, it's more practical going sr22. no one hates rb's, it's more like not many want to build one if it's not a skyline

12:07 so I think its save to assume the previous rebuild was shite if the piston just falls out like that. Should've used oversized pistons a year ago! Oh, about the hydraulic chain tensioner: a chain stretches over time, with a solid tensioner you have to adjust it occasionaly (about once a year is fine) to counter the chain getting to much slack. Nissan designed the engine with a hydraulic tensioner to prevent you from having to constantly adjust it.

When you swap an engine you can't just put different shit in a car from what ever model or brand. Like for a 240 a KA and SR is made for that specific chassis so it's super easy to swap and you don't need to worry about part fitment and wiring harness issues which is most common. If you swap a RB from a GTR in a 240 you will have a harder time fitting it, part fitment and wiring harness issues. It's still a Nissan so it wouldn't be something like a LS but it's still not a plug and play like the SR.

That's actually a new info for me,thanks for the explanation! I guess im used to see drift cars have whatever engines owners want in them,so i thought an RB swap is a good idea. I guess if i was more into 240's and knew more about them i would of thought about that,hahah.

lol I have an rb20 in an s13, its not difficult at all. a standard rb25 with bolt ons and a gtst gearbox would never break with a good tune and more power than he's making now. I have no idea why the fuck he'd stay with a setup that is going to keep killing engines and gearboxes.

Not tryin to discourage you, or burst your bubble, but making a sr22 by running oversized pistons instead of a stroker kit won’t get you as much torque, so an aftermarket intake manifold may not be the best option, although I doubt it will hurt, considering you’re still flowing more air. The reason stroker kits increase torque so much is because they increase the mechanical advantage of the piston’s force on the crankshaft. I still think you are going the better route, because a larger bore provides more power at higher rpms, where, like Alberto said, the stroker kit wouldn’t be able to rev to. I would definitely recommend Engineering Explained’s channel if you want to know more about the inner workings of engines and the forces acting on them. Really loving the content, keep it up!

Does your engine management not reduce the boost pressure when the engine knocks ?. If not, might be worth getting an aftermarket boost controller that has knock sense, so if you end up with some crap fuel it wont damage the engine. Even old Saabs had this from 1984 onwards.

even the 335i won't correct that much under knocking conditions. I know. And it's not the ECU even, they detect the knocking just fine with stock sensors, it's the management software.. maybe manufacturers secretly hope you blow their engine. He just needs tighter parameters on his ignition timing pulling.

Looks like you had some major piston slap. That's crazy you were able to still rip it so hard and still running haha. Good job on pulling that motor man. It's amazing how much you have learned over the years!!

The stock hydraulic tensionner have locking notches allowing it to not loose tension while there is no oil pressure at all. It's a big mistake if you switch to a solid one,because you will not manage tension as well as your hydraulic one does,wich is all the time,and with hot chain. You only will adjust tension with cold engine,and have a loose chain,once hot.

I'm sorry I don't normally blame people for stuff. But I'd get a different engine builder. Blaming the blow by on bad gas. Come on if that was the case all our cars would be messed up. When the engine was rebuilt Aberto didn't gap the rings properly for a turbo. He left them stock. Look at Alberto's track record with his car. as far as I know he has Rebuilt his engine in that BMW 3 times in less then 6 months. Yea I really hate to say it. I like Alberto. But he's not a good engine builder.

I have to many to count actually. I built my first engine by the time I was 13 and finished the car by the time I was 16. I am a ASE certified car mechanic now Graduated from UTI. I think I know what I am talking about. I have built cars like this. You might want to not comment on something to which you don't know

I agree he is pretty useless, everything he touches goes to complete shit just like when he said that "you should put anti-seize on all lug studs of drift cars because it makes them easier to remove while at the track" this is absolutely incorrect if you put the proper torque on the wheel nut you will never have a problem getting it off and further more putting anti-seize on will cause you to over torque and stretch your studs. This is coming for a licensed mechanic with 13 years experience.

Thats why some tuners use 4 egt sensors... 1per cilinder ... something goes wrong and the alarm goes off saving the block most of the time. Fuel starvation is one of the most common things when tuning... causing a lean mixture and detonation as a result
