Adam,I would recommend having Alberto weld in a exhaust flex pipe, this will protect the manifold and turbo components from cracking, warping and other annoying issues. Many OEM companies use flex pipes. I know it is a little late to comment on this, but keep it in mind next time... Head alignment dowel pins need to be measured before installing head gasket, since you had the head and block resurfaced, the distance between head and block becomes smaller,but the dowel pin stays same length. If the head alignment dowels are too big, then the head does not properly seat on the new gasket and also is prone to failure. Keep up the cool videos!

Hey Adam, I'm late so not sure that you'll see this. I'd just like to suggest that you don't break the engine in easy. I know a lot of people suggest doing that and there are a few reasons why I think you shouldn't. As you probably know, the hone in the cylinder is there to retain oil for the Pistons and rings. But it also has the secondary purpose of basically filing the rings to a perfect fit against the cylinder wall. As you break in the engine. The heat cycling of the rings will cause them to harden over time, so it's best to get them bedded well before that happens. Because once the rings have reached that point then sharp edges on the hone will wear down quickly. Another thing of note is that the rings don't just seal because of their pretension from being larger than the cylinder. The piston ring lands are designed specifically to allow the pressures from combustion behind the rings. This means that the higher your combustion pressures are, the harder the rings get forced into the cylinder walls, wearing them into the cylinder better. For these 2 reasons alone I've always done hard pulls/track driving on every engine I've built to seat the rings. I have had great experiences doing it this way and have had great results in terms of oil consumption and blow-by. So I would just say barring any massive issues with lambda or timing, to just drive it hard to break it in, change the oil quickly the first couple of times and maybe even if you're curious, send off an oil sample to Blackstone labs and have an oil analysis done and they can tell you how you're break-in went.

The "composite" head gasket stuff is actually a mix of graphite, metal and other "heat tempering material".
@DodgyBrothersEngineering7 жыл бұрын
The composite head gasket is graphite impregnated to help fill in the imperfections in the surfaces, it doesn't add any strength to the head gasket. All cylinder sealing is done via the metal crush rings. The standard head gasket will survive at quite reasonably high hp levels, since the material part of the gasket doesn't come in contact with any pressure sensitive areas. The biggest advantage of metal over composite is when the bores are very close to water or oil jackets, and that comes down to the individual engine design. The biggest draw back of metal is trying to seal the cylinder under high boost. You really need a very smooth surfaces to run a metal gasket.

I recently (2 weeks ago) talked to a Tomei tech about copper spray. He was pretty emphatic that it is a bad idea to use copper spray. In the past, I have used the copper spray on my SR gaskets because of "conventional wisdom". I decided to do some more research on the topic and went straight to the source. That said, copper spray isn't a bad idea on intake or exhaust gaskets if you can't find new oem gaskets after removing the manifolds.

Please do a proper start up on this fresh rebuild, take plugs out, take out fpump fuse and turn over engine to lube it up. When you actually start the engine, use conventional oil to wear in the rings the first 200 miles. Then switch to synthetic. On first start up, rev it up to 2k immediately to get oil pressure up

At the risk of sounding flippant, the way to build a better SR20DET is to put an SR20VET head on it. The VET heads flow have Nissans version of VTEC and close to double the CFM stock @ ~310 CFM , compared to the stock DET heads @ ~180 CFM.
