I have a 2016 twin cam 103. I love it. Only complaint is how hot it runs, and having to eventually deal with the twin cam chain tensioners. I just plan on replacing them around 30 to 40K. It’s at 19K now. Very happy.

@tmvandenbroek not really. My 2010 ultra had 105k miles on it when I tore it down for a 107 stage 3. Cam tensioner shoes were finished by my standards, bike ridden far but lightly. Now... not so much 😂

I did a 95 inch upgrade with Andrews cams on my former 2005 Road King Classic and that motor had great power more than enough for American roads. Now I have a 18 RK Special with a stock 107 M8 and it is more than enough power. In the future Harley may start coming out with smaller ci motors with turbo's on them just like they are doing now on cars with the 6 cylinder turbo's and ecoboost motors. I personally like straight up V8's in my cars but with MC's it wouldn't be a bad Idea to have a smaller cubic inch motor with a turbo on it to make the motor last longer with less maintenance and more speed and torque as long as the turbo and the motor is done right.

I took my 2011 Ultra Classic in to have the oil changed and the Cam Chain tensioners inspected at 30k as per the internet. They were as good as new. In fact the whole bike and everything in it is running perfectly. The only thing that really bugs me is that I have lost my "Blues Brothers" CD. News like this doesn't make much of a headline though.

I am in the market for a Harley and looking to buy this year...however I am afraid of the twin cam 103. The plastic chain tensioners wear and the fragments can clog the oil pump that results in sudden engine failure.....I am feeling the only way to stop this is to convert the motor to a gear driver instead of chain driven cams....and also upgrade the oil pump. . I am encouraged to hear you know of some of these have 80-100K and still run. this is the first time I have heard this. I appreciate your feedback. my bike of choice would be 2017 breakout
@A-FrameWedge6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Elisseou Srk cycles has said that you need to do that gear conversion on these bikes and it is not that expensive to do.
@marksimoneau91156 жыл бұрын
Gear drive conversion is a $1500 investment. My choice is to replace the tensioners periodically. A good Harley dealer knows when this needs to be done. Once the exhaust is removed its not a comlicated job you could probably do yourself

ez to change.stay away from chicom parts that wear like butter in a hot skillet.

@raylocke2826 жыл бұрын
the tensioners should have been described as a regular service item in Harley owners manual.Gear drive drive necessitates checking pinion runout .Eventhe Milwaukee 8 has a plastic tensioner.A better but more expensive would have been spring loaded tensioner pulley on the twinky.Harley could just as easily built a 4 cylinder v 4 ,liquid cooled fuelinjected engine like the Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe.I ride a 2005 Eglide cvo and check my tensioners every 20k clicks.

The Vaquero is really nice, but its slow compared to the Harley. Seat was very uncomfortable on the Vaquero as well. Best riding bike for the money though(upgraded the seat to an aftermarket seat) . If you don't have to have a Harley then I would definitely test ride one.
