There is one variable that I suspect was left out of this test; heat. The PS4 generates enough heat to cook your next meal when used for prolonged times. Any drive inside is going to be getting lots of heat, and will therefore slow down over time. This of course would only affect heavy users. Casuals need not to worry about it. But also casuals won't likely be getting an SSD. In addition, the less heat the external drive will get will preserve the drive for much longer. Thus giving more than the internal in the long run.

Do you know the speed of the standard HDD? It should be as slow as the first attempt with the SSHD (22s) or am I wrong?

Please keep in mind, PS4 Pro has USB 3.0 so the external load times will be good. Standard PS4 does not, so it would be interesting to see how the times on standard PS4 compare.

dumahim every PS4 has USB3.0, PS4 Pro has additional USB port on backside, it is 3.1

Technically, no because the original PS4s USB 3 port is connected to the SATA 2 so there should be no performance increase. I’m not sure though. The PS4 Pro has a SATA 3 port.

So basically you don't need to combo a ssd with a external hard drive ?? Me and my friend was debating but we don't know a lot about it

Robert Thomas no, you don't but if you do, you have the speed of SSD and storage space of HDD at the same time.

eeeasy I thought so my friend and I was debating but he wanted to do a small ssd like a 250gb and use a 4tb external hard drive not even sure how that would work but thanks for the info

It is a good idea as long as you keep everything on HDD and copy a few games you currently play to SSD. Keep in mind 250GB as internal drive means ~160GB free space. But games like TLOU, R6 Siege has no benefit being on SSD so these can be played from external HDD because these do not need the loading speed advantage. Open world games benefit more from SSD loading speed.

eeeasy I believe his plan is to play his current game until he finishes it or wants to move to the next game and yes he plays open world games but when he is done with it just transfers it to the external hard drive and always have his ssd freed up
