That's right - In England, Ireland and Wales anyway (Scotland went earlier). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Style_and_New_Style_dates The nature of exactly what this means may not precisely map to our conception of what new year means - everything was much more driven by the liturgical calendar - but as you can see - it muddied the water on year of birth.
