I listened to actor, wasn't into it so much. I went to strange mercy and after a few listens, it became one of my favorite albums of all-time. I went back to actor and I got really into that also and loved it. this is a 10/10 for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the other 439 comments mentioned that the line "Best, finest, surgeon, come cut me open" is actually a line taken from Marilyn Monroe's journal. Annie said that she used the line because she felt it was something everyone feels at least once; wishing someone could come and cut the pain out of our bodies. There's a really great article that's just been done on her by Smithsonian because she just won the American Ingenuity Award, it's on their website. I agree with most of your video, and my favorite tracks are the title track, Surgeon, Cruel and Northern Lights. I actually used to disagree with you about Neutered Fruit(though I wouldn't call it my least favorite track because I don't have a least favorite for this album) because I'd always heard the line as "Did you ever write a prayer for me? Did you ever really care?" and for me, the forwardness of that really resonated. I recently discovered that it's actually "Did you ever ride a bear for me? Did you ever really care?" and it's just not the same anymore.

Chloe in the Afternoon is my favorite. As is The Stranger in Actor. Both are first tracks.
@ClaudiusPtolemy11 жыл бұрын
Actor is far more interesting in my opinion. Strange Mercy is definitely more commercially viable and it is still a good record but I think it falls well short of actor. Actor is so dark and gentle at the same time, great record.
@GiftedCombo6 жыл бұрын
Claudius Ptolemy I disagree this album has so much raw emotion in it while still being lyrically cryptic and engaging. The music itself on tracks like Northern lights and strange mercy have a story itself

I just bought this lp today and I can't stop listening to it! Annie Clark is a master of setting dark and awkward lyrics against airy yet dark music, while creating an epic atmosphere for each song-she's brilliant, I give the album a 10. Thanks for reviewing this album Anthony :-)

I'm loving Strange Mercy, too. I don't know if there was a track I disliked. I think Annie has a keen sense of accessibility in her music without sacrificing experimentation and exploration. I believe this to be her best album yet (and I'm a big fan of Marry Me and Actor). Thanks for the positive review, Anthony! Hope you're well :) Forever.
@RecentFuture11 жыл бұрын
I can never decide if I love SM, Actor, or Marry Me more, because they're all so distinct and different. Marry Me is very pleasant and probably the most accessible, Actor and SM are more interesting though. (By the way, funnily enough, Neutered Fruit is one of my favourite SM songs. Guess it doesn't work for everyone.)

I started to like St. Vincent when I heard an acoustic version of the song "Surgeon", the song is more haunting in the acoustic. My favorite songs off this album are "Cheerleader" and "Dilettante". Your reviews are awesome by the way. :)

Great review! I agree on everything you said except for the Neutered Fruit part: that one is actually my favorite song in the album because it summarizes her whole work on Strange Mercy (it's sweet and ethereal but with crude and weird lyrics and a tremendous and twisted final)

Good call on the Grinderman comparison. Annie actually mentioned she'd been listening to them during an interview on NPR. On the other hand, I think S.M. is even less instantly accessible as Actor (which I found to be pretty inaccessible as well). This one will definitely reveal its charms with repeated listens I think, but a lot more repeated listens than her other records.

There is so much great music coming out this month. It's difficult to narrow down what I'd like to see you review. Bronze Nazareth just came out wiht an album, "School for the Blindman" it's awesome. DJ Shadow's album leaked a while back, I really love it and am glad to see him back in his element. The Plaid album Scintilli, Ladytron's new album "Gravity The Seducer", "Devil's Walk" by Apparat. Oh and again, "Rock Creek Park" by Oddisee! As for this album, I thought it was good but not great. =\
