This is from the movie "Johnny got his gun". In an explosion, he lost both arms, both legs, his eyes, his hearing and his lower jaw and tongue. The doctors thought he was brain dead so they kept him alive for experiments. When they discovered he was actually conscious, they hid him away from the world. With no hearing, no sight and the inability to move, talk or touch anything, he is a universe of one. His pain is the only world he has now.

Hard to imagine in today's time were lawyers are required for every contract and it is impossible tos sample any creators content without paying huge amounts of money. The movie is based on the book by Dalton Trumbo. Trumbo was blacklisted by Hollywood and labeled a Communist sympathizer. The FBI raided his home and then demanded he turn in the names of everyone he associated with. The government banned his book from all public libraries. This was during the Vietnam War. If it was today, the FBI would call him a Russian sympathizer, and his book would be banned from KZbin and Facebook in the name of anti racism and anti hate. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Imagine being blind, deaf and unable to speak after all your faculties have been destroyed by landmine, your arms and legs all cut off, and when you wake up, you have no way to tell. All you know is blankness, darkness, silence. You have no way to interact with anyone or anything around you. All you can do is think to yourself. But what is there to even think about that could ever make any difference? You're locked away in this military hospital and potentially forgotten by the entire world. That is the experience of this soldier that this movie is all about and is what disturbed Metallica so much that they had to write this track about it. If you ever watch the film or read the book, make sure you give yourself time and support to recover from it. It's possibly one of the most depressing war stories you'll ever know.

My buddies and I piled into my car and raced home from school to catch the premiere of this video on MTV back in ‘89. It was their first video ever and couldn’t wait to see what they would do. Hey Stacey, thanks again! Wow "One" is such an iconic track by Metallica. The band's transition after Cliff Burton's tragic passing was really quick, with Jason Newsted joining as the new bass player in less than a month. Their "Metallica $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited The EP" featured covers of punk bands and even though it only has five songs, it's one of the strongest EPs I've ever heard. It served as a great precursor to the much-anticipated "And Justice for All" album. Fans, including myself, were eagerly waiting for this new Metallica album, hoping for something as amazing as "Master of Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning." "One" left me speechless the first time I heard it, and the whole album is just pure metal and a different sound altogether. I believe "One" was Metallica's first music video for TV, or MTV at the time. We were all crazy about this album! I've seen them live a couple of times, but that was in a different era. In 2021, Elton John mentioned in an interview that "One" was the best song ever written for him. It's great to hear such praise, especially from an artist of a different music genre, and I also happen to love Elton John. They ended up collaborating on some work, which is awesome. Thanks again, Stacey, for the great reaction! These are songs I don't listen to very often these days-I have too many on my mind! I save them for special occasions. I was 17 when I got this album. This is one of the best Metallica songs ever and this still hits hard as it did back in 1994. About the movie, I can relate to it because I used to have American gf who was deployed in Kuwait. She got shot in the leg about year ago and got depression from the pain. She tried to take her own life back in july and was flown back to Tampa, Fl. She was in coma for 5 weeks and when she was getting better after months, she od:d on hospital drugs. This was now one month ago 💔

Metallica caught a lot of shit from fans and were accused of "selling out" for making this video and many people still dislike the video.... To me, the video version is the "correct" version of this song. AJFA isn't my favorite album of theirs but in an era where people were still relying on corny shit like Play Satanism and ghouls and goblins and shit Metallica wrote an album based on something far scarier than any fictional character... Reality. And this video depicts the overall feel of the album perfectly. Cliff would have loved the inclusion of the film. Crazy story, one of the directors of this music video (Michael Salomon) has basically directed every pop country artists music video that has ever come out since the 80's sometime and I think this is the only rock or metal video he ever did

"I'm sure it reasonates with so many soldiers out there.." You have no idea. The emotional scars of war take decades to heal. The song perfectly captures the emotional pain of PTSD. My pain was made tolerable by discovering the mercy of Jesus...20 years later. The physical pain, emotional trauma, anger and regret no longer master me, but it does sit there in the corner of my mind. It has no power over me any more. Being saved was an incredible mercy. I love this song because it captures the emotion trauma of war...and unless you have been there, you wouldn't understand without this small window into that complexity.

YES! I'm so glad you added this reaction to your channel. Such a great video and reaction. Just as powerful today as it was in the 90s! If you want another one to react to, try "Unforgiven" from the same era. I remember being on lunch in high school, down at the store (they had tables and a TV always set to MTV), and it was always loud in there, but when "Unforgiven" came on, the whole store would go dead quiet and we all got goosebumps watching it. In my opinion, not as powerful as this video, but it is epic in its own right!

From Wikipedia: "One" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as the third and final single from the band's fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the song portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded-arms, legs and jaw blown off by a landmine, blind, deaf, and unable to speak or move-begging God to take his life. In the music video, attempting to communicate with the hospital staff he jolts in his bed, spelling SOS in Morse code. A video for the song was introduced in January 1989 on MTV. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon, the video's story is intercut with scenes taken from the 1971 anti-war film Johnny Got His Gun. This is such a genius piece of art. Listen to the machine gun fire in the into and then the drum transition in the middle then the immediate reference to Morse code which can sound the same. This was a collaboration of super talented people.
